    The enclosure is so much work that it probably makes more sense to buy an old (analog) oven, preferably broken to drive the cost down, and adding electronic controls to it. Same result, less money, less work.

    • @DBCraftWorld
      @DBCraftWorld 2 місяці тому

      Yes, I agree, but you need to find cheap, old and broken oven first (I just couldn't find one). Besides that, there are problems like, interior dimensions, weight, external size. Overall it might be less work, but more problems. I decided to make one from scratches, cause it gave me a chance to design it exactly like I wanted.. In general, both ways gives different result but also require different amount of work. I'm not judge which is better- it depends on what you need, and how much time you have.

    Loved this one. Your handle and the mirror polish on the dagger are the shining stars. The guard looks like it was a ton of work -- I think it would've looked awesome if you'd darkened the bronze. And maybe done a little shaping -- everything else flowed so well. And the guard looked a bit... plain... compared to the rest. Either way, subbed, and that dagger was a stunner.

    • @DBCraftWorld
      @DBCraftWorld 5 місяців тому

      Thanks a lot for kind words, man! Guard indeed was the biggest challenge- mostly because of the casting. I wanted to braze a ring to the guard, but it would be too much- sometimes less it better. I like the idea of bluing/darkening the bronze.. there is a chance I will make 2.0 version with Damascus blade and engraving on the guard.. Darkening the brass would be consistent to double contrast damascus- I like the idea! Thanks a lot for suggestion!

      @@DBCraftWorld my pleasure! And like… I’m no expert - in any way lol! I just saw it and thought “oh! Darken that and give it a rough texture! Or polish it to super shiny” something about that sand blasted finish left it feeling a little like… idk. I don’t want to say incomplete bc I loved the build! But it left me wanting a bit more for the guard. I think your idea of Damascus on this one would be incredible; especially w a darkened brass guard!

    I just bought one and it will need quite a bit of tuning. Having a metal lathe and milling machine with engineering skills and experience, tuning and upgrades are not a problem, but I suspect most people won't be able to do the required tweeks. My first mod will be removing the horrible little plastic rod that just squishes against the shaft of the upper jaw section. This is responsible for the failure of the locking screw locking rotation of the base to upper. This is clearly a cost cut, as the instructions show a spring and metal dowel, not a scrap of plastic. I will be matching a brass dowel to do the locking and suspect that will fix that issue. As for the pins, they are crap. I will be filing a negative rack on the clamp face of the pins to compensate for the loose tolerance in the jaws that cause the jaws to rack out of parallel when tightening. If you have the ability to tune this vise it is good value compared to the limited options that suit hobby or budget buyers.

    • @DBCraftWorld
      @DBCraftWorld 6 місяців тому

      Hey Nathan! Thanks a lot for sharing your experience with this ball vise. I think all the mods you described would be a great content, if you would like to share the process step by step. From my perspective, the way how the ball vise hold the steel pates is enough, but I assume there might be much more issues with more complicated shape objects. As a first tool (for learning), I think it's ok. To start engraving you need to spend a lot of money. I've bought for my own money Vevor microscope, engraving machine, gravers and air compressor which costed me $700. GRS 5" Ball Vise cost more.

    • @NathanNostaw
      @NathanNostaw 5 місяців тому

      @@DBCraftWorld I'll try document my mods, but it will be low res as I don't have a decent camera nor decent phone. The equipment available these days may be lower quality, but it wasn't so long ago that there just wasn't a middle ground for getting into these types of skills. Irt was a case of buy the expensive gear new, find it 2nd hand at still high prices, or practice with manual and home made options.

    • @DBCraftWorld
      @DBCraftWorld 5 місяців тому

      @@NathanNostaw I agree with the quality of modern tools- they are cheaper,, but It always have a price in quality... Still, we cant ignore the fact, that poor quality tool is better than none :).

    • @NathanNostaw
      @NathanNostaw 5 місяців тому

      @@DBCraftWorld There is the old mentality of buying quality and being stung once rather than buying junk and being stung twice. I agree with this in most applications, but when getting into a new and expensive venture you don't know anything nor if it will be a long term pursuit. Cheapish equipment sure helps with this and can always be sold onto the next novice that is interested.

    • @DBCraftWorld
      @DBCraftWorld 5 місяців тому

      @@NathanNostaw Totally agree! I have always conflict in my head because "Only rich people afford to junk stuff", but on the other hand "it's better to have a shoes than walking barefoot".. most of the time I make my decisions strategic-I think it's the best way.

      @DBCraftWorld 10 місяців тому

      Thanks a lot! I beams give a little more rigidity, but if you're plan is to make something similar to Coal Iron works, the angle iron should be fine. I wanted to make something very (very) solid and powerful. The press is set to 25 ton of pressure (2300 PSI), but it can manage 37 ton (3600 PSI). In fact, for making damacus steel I don't need full power, but for the tool steel dedicated for hot cut or drift tools, 25 might be not enough. At the end overkill gives me flexibility :P.
