Hebrews 13 - Finishing Strong with a Blessing
This is our fifteenth video in our study with Tim Nichols on the book of Hebrews. Today, we finish the book with a study on Hebrews 13, which follows the final warning passage and considers practical application of the priestly ministry to which we have been called. We also take a look at the special issues of spiritual authority (in the local church) and the importance -- and frequent neglect! -- of blessing one another.

Hebrews 12 - Persevering in Peace through Suffering
Переглядів 48Місяць тому
This is our fourteenth video in our study with Tim Nichols on the book of Hebrews. We study Hebrews 12:1-29, which takes the cloud of witnesses we saw in the last chapter as an encouragement to persevere through suffering to seek peace with all people. We conclude with a reflection on how encouraging not only this chapter is but the book as a whole (in contradistinction to how the book is often taken to be terr...

    "This" refers to the entire preceding phrase "By grace you have been saved through faith" Faith is indeed a gift.

    • @gilwaa
      @gilwaa 5 днів тому

      You are correct that it refers to the entire preceding phrase, but that doesn’t entail that every action individually is a gift. If we say, “by her kindness, Mary went to the store to buy John a candy bar using his truck. This was a gift of Mary” it doesn’t mean that the truck was a gift from Mary, but that the entire action of her buying John something is the gift. Similarly, in Eph 2:8, the gift is the entire phrase of God saving us by grace through faith-not the faith individually. We read in Romans 10:17 that faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. We see Jesus rebuke the disciples for having little faith-why would he do this if He was the one giving them the faith? In Matthew 8:10 he speaks of having “found” Faith in the centurion, not having given the centurion his faith. The gift is the fact that God graces us salvation through faith, not only the faith itself.

    Believing in Christ means you believe He has authority and you submit to this authority. Therefore you will listen and do what God instructed us. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes and to carefully observe My ordinances. (Ezekiel 36:26-27) When you walk in the spirit, you WANT to walk as Jesus walked. We do fail, but the desire is there. The once saved, always saved question is stupid for me. Why do you want to know this? When you are married, do you also need to know if it is forever? If you love your spouse you shows behavior that supports that claim, same applies to a Christian. If you say you love Jesus, you have to show it by doing the commandments. If you are once saved or not, is it going to change your behavior? I hope not. And yes, I do believe you can lose your salvation. We get the eternal life at the resurrection, but the promise already now. The promise is secure, but we don't have it yet, so therefore we can lose it.

    We are not sinful from birth. Ezekiel 18:20 shows we are not guilty of Adam’s sin. 1 John 3:4 tells us sin is lawlessness. We aren’t guilty of sin until we break a law. Paul goes further to tell us that we cannot break the law until we understand it (Romans 7:9). We aren’t guilty until we reach the age of accountability and sin. This means once we are mature enough to know right from wrong and commit our first sin we are now dead in sin. Fortunately Jesus died for the entire world not just Christians (1 John 2:2) and whoever chooses to surrender their life to Christ after being drawn to Him by the Holy Spirit will be saved. This is common sense when you think about it. The problem is there has been so much original sin indoctrination over thousands of years that we miss it. Even wicked men don’t judge a little child for stealing because they know a child doesn’t know right from wrong. God is a far smarter and far more righteous judge than any man could ever be.

    Is the claim that “Jesus is the only way” a necessary proposition of a saving trust/faith? What if, for example, someone who struggles with doubt decides to put their trust in both Jesus and in other false gods for salvation? Does one cancel out the other? Or must a truth claim necessarily be established with regards to content of saving faith?

    I struggle with this a lot sometimes. I often feel like I’m behind in my spiritual development, don’t know enough, don’t know Greek or Hebrew yet, haven’t finished seminary, etc. I often fear I will miss out on rewards because I got a late start. I grew up in a lordship church and didn’t really get it figured out until my late 20’s (I’m 34 now). So besides the youth work I did there (teaching freegrace) for a couple years before I got pushed out, I haven’t had much of a ministry. I think that stuff keeps me from resting like I should, not really sure how I should think about it or orient myself.

    I agree in part and disagree in part. I think the guest defines election by conflating it with God’s choices in other matters. For example, God chose Peter to serve the other eleven. That does not nullify the possibility of prior choices of which disciples should make up the Twelve or which Jews should become disciples. The choice of Matthias is a debatable illustration. The disciples had been told to chill until the Holy Spirit came upon them. When Peter, “impetuous Peter,” stood up to force a replacement for Judas, the Spirit had not yet come upon the church. Had they offered a third option, “nobody, yet,” and the Lord answered through the casting of lots, it’s possible that no replacement would have been chosen until God called Saul of Tarsus. Election to service is obvious and stated in 1 Corinthians 12. However, commission to service entails a precondition: salvation. Clearly, God had chosen Saul to serve as an apostle and martyr. But who can deny that God also chose to intervene to convert the persecutor into the saint? (Note that a distinction between voluntary and involuntary conversion is irrelevant here.) I agree, Sovereignty is about a right. God is not a micromanager. I had to think about “permissive will” and ended up agreeing. “OT vs NT” is not enough to trigger memory of my comment on that. Perhaps it related to a difference in salvation’s blessings during the two eras. Calvinism exceeds scripture concerning sovereignty, oversimplifies God’s will, and exceeds scripture about double predestination. God would be malevolent if He predestined reprobation. However, He doesn’t need to predestine any to destruction. We all predestine ourselves when our sins ratify Adam’s fall. God owes nothing to any of us except justice. Given that context, “predestination” means God re-destined some to salvation.

      I disagree with parts of each point of TULIP, but in general, it gives a context that makes salvation needed, what it means to be saved, and a behind-the-scenes process by which God saves. You have to define the need, and, yes, that is bad news. But knowing God preserves his children is very good news. The “how” is a problem only if a Calvinist thinks it is part of the gospel.

    Straw man. Consistently historical Calvinist do not agree with double predestination. RC Sproul rejects this and yet you throw his name out as affirming it. If you want to be taken seriously then represent people correctly.

    • @C4CApologetics
      @C4CApologetics 3 місяці тому

      Sproul writes, "Given that the Bible teaches both election and particularism, we cannot avoid the subject of double predestination. The question then is not if predestination is double, but how it is double." Sproul also writes, "The Reformed view makes a crucial distinction between God’s positive and negative decrees. God positively decrees the election of some, and he negatively decrees the reprobation of others. The difference between positive and negative does not refer to the outcome (though the outcome indeed is either positive or negative), but to the manner by which God brings his decrees to pass in history. The positive side refers to God’s active intervention in the lives of the elect to work faith in their hearts. The negative refers, not to God’s working unbelief in the hearts of the reprobate, but simply to 👉 his passing them by and withholding his regenerating grace 👈 from them." In Reformed view of sovereignty, God could monergistically regenerate the reprobate, but He instead chooses to "pass them by" because He has sovereignly decreed all things from eternity past, to include not giving them the gift of faith, and His passing them by.

We do understand it. It's not monolithic. Just because someone sees an entailment in Calvinism that you don't doesn't mean it's a strawman. A serious defender or Calvinism would acknowledgment the objection, note that some versions of Calvinism have accepted that, and then argue that the objection doesn't have to follow all versions of Calvinism for this or that reason. Just accusing someone of misrepresenting you is lazy. ESPECIALLY when Danny has the quotes, as demonstrated just above.

    I call myself a one and four-half point Calvinist. Simplistically, Arminianism runs the wrong way, while Calvinism reaches the goal line, crosses the end zone, and keeps going. Calvinists call me Arminianism and Arminians call me Calvinist. It will be interesting to follow this series about Free Grace theology.

      I also call myself Moderate Calvinist or Calvarminian, depending on my mood.

    I think, God being merciful to sinners while also being just is an overblown philosophical problem of our own making.
