    Nice! I'm planning to build something similar, but using a Hardinge dividing head as the base. I snagged one fairly cheap, and it's incredibly solid and has no discernible backlash but only came with one plate, so a stepper and controller seems the obvious thing to add to it.

      Well aware. That’s why I clean stuff during and afterwards. Typically don’t aim the air towards ways etc as well if I can help it. My ways are always covered in leather as well. The Vise I don’t give a shit about because it’s rubbish anyway. 👍

    Captain obvious here, feel free to ignore me, but the closer you get to the middle, the slower the part is rotating which puts massive stress on the cutting tool. You can try increasing the speed as you get closer to the centre, like at least 1000rpm, or even more

I had a piece of steel that gave me real grief and I thought I’d try the new one on it. Knackered it. Partly my fault I think. Went a bit hard and a little too much stick out. Well done sir. Way back, (early 1990's) I worked for a sharpening service. The braze on the carbide is extremely robust. Remember, those blades turn at 3000 plus rpm. Worst case, the carbide will break before the braze lets go. Keep up the great work!

  • @johnwp111
    @johnwp111 17 днів тому

    Parting off is difficult at the best of times, especially on a small lathes which lacks rigidity. What makes parting off difficult is the accumulated flexing that occurs on the lathe. I.e. There is movement between the saddle, the cross slide, the compound, the tool post, combine this with the over hang from the center of the tool post out to the parting blade. It all adds up. Remove this accumulated flexing and parting off success greatly improves. Bringing the parting blade as close to the center of the tool post as you have done should vastly improve parting off. Also look at some other videos on turning your parting blade upside down. In essence by doing this the parting blade moves out or ways from the work piece instead of into it, thereby reducing the possibility of crashing the parting tool. I have found power feeding works best, set the feed rate to the lowest rate and work up until you find the sweet spot.

It’s like everything really… someone has already done it somewhere 😆 As for speeds… a few guys have made different suggestions on a fb group I’m on. I used to run slow… it’d jam up and scare the shit out of me. Then switched to fast… had good results but was to scared to power feed. So I bit the bullet (manned up 😆) and tried all different combos while power feeding. Mid speed and upped the feed rate a smidge is the outcome. Speed is somewhere between 350 & 450rpm. Not sure cause it seems off a bit. Yet to test it properly.

    Unless you have a heavy rigid machine, carbide inserts are almost always a waste of time and money. That parting holder you showed around 16 minutes is faulty manufacture or has been damaged and returned to seller then off loaded onto you. The vast majority of people using carbide inserts are just too lazy or too dumb to learn what even improperly ground HSS tools can do. (Stefan Gotteswinter about the only You Tuber using inserts 'properly' on some 'exotic' materials) Personally, I have two 'throwaway' insert tools, a small boring bar bought by accident and a small triangle insert one I was given probably 45 years ago. I made a holder for the diamond shaped inserts for one specific job, haven't used it since as HSS is way more convenient

    The carbide insert tool you have is the best one. I cant explain why it falls out, mine never does. Something must be out of alignment on your machine or it is deflecting badly. I just made a Short using the carbide tool without coolant or lube on mild steel .750 round. EZ peezy. Hint, faster is not better. Make chips that dont need dips!

      Hi mate, I know why it falls out, the tool is stuffed. Was from day dot. They’re meant to wedge in where this doesn’t and never has. I thought it was normal (and I was the problem) until it was discussed on a forum and I was told it was defective. I’ll dig it back out and show it in the next vid. I just gave up on it.

      I got mine from Shars Tools, best goodies for machines imo. Good luck. No need to dig up a defective tool, file it where it belongs...the trash. Cheers.

    Hi Troy glad to see your channel up and running. I've had good results with carbide but you've got to send it. High speed and moderate feed. I get your point about broken tooling. Quality brands get quality results but come at a premium. Hss however is a little more forgiving on the old purse strings and very versatile.

      G’day mate… cheers! Yeah, the premium thing isn’t an option atm unfortunately. A million other things to buy 😆 And yes I get the carbide tooling thing. But that particular tool I showed at the beginning of the vid, without the adapter/holder was around 150-160 bucks with an insert. I bought another 5 inserts while I was there. Then the adapter. So it wasn’t a super cheap venture! Off a reputable tool maker/supplier here in melbs as well. So I didn’t cheap out on a chinesium eBay special. One cut it lasted. I have 2 or 3 cheaper variants in the drawer as well. Anyway… since I’ve sped up (got over the fear) the hss is working out well for me. Hoping even better with the new holder and the solid riser. I’m yet to power feed it…. Might try it at the end of the build. From the kitchen, behind the counter!! Haha. Thanks again… not sure but you might be my 100th sub. If so thanks heaps 👍

      @@NOideaMachining yes that's me lucky number 💯. When I was working in industry we ran a Sandvik parting blade and got really good mileage. I used to run a Colchester. The Sandvik parting blade was $200-$300 from memory so not cheap. I've changed jobs and only do machining at home but have that bit of paper they give out these days like a cereal box lucky prize. Apprenticeships aren't what they used to be. Fitter turning was my 3rd trade and the quality of training was worse than the other 2.
