I live here in KC, and we talk about Mr.Swope and all the charity he did for the community in historical societies and local history locations. His funeral, interestingly enough, lasted three days and had to be held in the Kansas City public library since there were no churches large enough to accommodate the number of people who wanted to come give their goodbyes. The estate where the poisonings happened ended up being torn down, but the images of the former estate are gorgeous. One of the largest city parks was donated and named after him. I imagine that the public at the time wanted Dr Hyde’s head on a pike since Mr.Swope did everything he could to support the poor and that he was going to change his will to further support them after his passing.

There is some question in my mind as to the truth of the two chemists testimony. In an age when poisoning was rampant, why would two chemists fail to put his name in the register when it is law and the poison is exotic and unlike antimony has no medical use. There was supposedy a trace but non lethal amount of antimonu found in cook. Conveniently it was used as an emetic. He is guilty. Ironically the circumstantial evidence and his absurd attempts to divert the inquest was more evodent than any actual evidence.

I dug into the locations for this one and I'm loving that I know all of them and grew up in the area where she was out and about. Fun fact that the courthouse in Barnstable is built on a massive hill that children sled down during the winter and yes the courthouse is still the active courthouse and there's a jail so prisoners watch kids sled. It's very odd.

Nick's idea about "didoes" being amusing pictures within the watches may be pretty close especially if the watches being sold were made of cheap tin. Merriam-Webster's second definition of "dido" is "something that is frivolous or showy".

Nice. I don't think many people realize just how much of everything they plied Iron Mike with. Also ethanol is a specific for methanol and glycol poisoning when fomepizole is not available as it wasn't back in the 1930's. The body will preferentially go after the ethanol first while giving the body the chance to eliminate the other chemicals. So, as you said, the Murder Trust were actually keeping Iron Mike alive.

Croquembouche is a French dessert made of choux, that's stacked into a cone and wrapped in spun threads of caramel, and typically takes about three days to make. Kombucha is, as you guys mentioned, a fermented black tea very popular with the health-conscious! I LOVE the story of Alexander Pearce and his wild escape, so thanks for covering this story!
