Hey, I see you are using a Demorrow Marimba. I am torn between purchasing a 4.3 octave Studio and a 5 Octave SEP, what are your thoughts on the SEP overall?
Thanks for asking. I actually own two 5.0 SEPs! My husband and I both love it for its price and quality. The middle range is great. The bar is on the narrow side for mid and upper register. There are a couple notes in the lower range that are not as resonant, but generally speaking it is a great studio instrument. I have tried a 5.0 Studio before. The wood has a warmer sound compared to SEP.

Very nice! I notice this fits on a 4-octave instrument. I wonder if Mitchell Peters ever wrote for larger instruments. I was studying with him in the early 70's and I can't remember how big the instrument in his studio was. I bet it was 4 octaves; I think I would remember having to adjust to a bigger instrument.
What mallets are you using?
Hello, I was using the Momoko Kamiya Series, MK04R made by Resta-Jay Percussions. Resta-Jay Percussions is a European company and this set is on the heavy side.

Hi Joel, Thank you! The brand of the marimba is Trixon and the one that I used for this recording was retuned by Century Mallet in Chicago. I am not sure what the wood material the bars are made of but they are not rosewood. We sold this marimba and purchased a DeMorrow SEP 5.0.

The mallets sound great! Why don't you recommend these mallets for stevens grip?
The mallet shafts are rattan and the mallets themselves are heavy. When you use Stevens grip, you hold the sticks at the very back of the mallet shaft. Rattan is also very "bendy", which does not work with the mechanics of Stevens grip plus the weight of the mallets in your hand. Because of these two details, I recommend Stevens grip players to try lighter sticks with birch shafts such as Sammut, Wu, Zeltsman, or Burritt marimba mallets. Thanks for your question!
