How To Put Your Own Landsape / Backyard Into Stellarium
A full step by step how-to tutorial on capturing, editing and installing your own viewing location into stellarium as a custom landsape. Only free software used.
See your own house and those annoying tall trees - whatever you see from your viewing/imaging location can be shown in stellarium as a 360° panorama. You can do multiple custom landsapes if you like, such as home, dark site1 etc.
This is a long video but it shows the whole process, so even if you don't know what to do in GIMP, I walk you through it. Timestamps are provided if you want to skip to particular sections.
To create the config file for Stellarium, simply open Notepad, Notepad++ or similar and paste the following into it :
[landscape]
name = ********
description = *********
type = spherical
maptex = *********.png
Maptex_top = 90
angle_rotatez = 0
country = *********
latitude = + d ' "
longitude = - d ' "
------------------------------------
Now replace the asterisks with your data. Adjust +/- in latitude and longitude and fill in the figures.
You then save the file as "landsape.ini". The .ini suffix makes it a configuration file.

Cheap Dew Prevention and How to Make DIY Dew Heaters for Astrophotography

DIY dew heaters / dew straps for telescopes, lenses, eyepieces etc. in astronomy, astrophotography and indeed photography. I also delve into the other options in the battle against dew formation, such as the dew shield and the primary mirror fan. Instead of buying a £15 - £20 dew heater, I bought £5 worth of resistors and can make at least 2 or 3 dew straps from these. If you feel I've saved yo...
Full Astrophotography Processing Tutorial - Beginner Friendly - Free Software - Whirlpool Galaxy pt2

My DIY Home Observatory Tour

I've taken an old, beat up caravan/trailer and converted it into a roll off roof observatory and it's a great upgrade for astrophotography. It will afford me more imaging time (which I've been very short of) by almost eliminating any set up time. It's now worth bothering with a two hour gap in the clouds. This will also mean a lot to this channel, but more on that in my channel update video... ...

    • @Cheapass-tro
      @Cheapass-tro 27 днів тому

      Neither does mine but it only needs to keep the tube slightly above ambient. Your hand is warm enough to prevent dew on the scope so it may not feel warm enough to your hand. Only worry if it doesn't resist dew. Then up the wattage (lower the resistance), which you may want to do anyway for the winter.

    T hat's a cracking vid and answered my question nicely, thanks for doing and sharing it. I think you hit the nail on the head about 6 1/2 mins in, ie stepped tracking and following the 'shape' are the issues and that's why you need an EQ rather than Alt-Az. I'm going to revisit my options and as I already have a Go2 Tracking Mount, take look at that Wedge idea. That just leaves the 'scope choice to consider; stick with what I have (add a nice camera, etc) or upgrade to a better reflector or go the refractor route... sleepless nights ahead! Cheers.

Now you've just added another, as I actually don't know what this piece is called and I can't seem to find the answer. I just call it a DSLR mounting screw thingymajig. 🤷‍♂ If you're looking to source one of these, I'd suggest you don't bother as it's pretty useless (not as adjustable as it seems). I'd instead get a ballhead mount or similar. It has a ¼" bolt (a standard camera fitting).

    The sort of wire you used near the end is sold on Amazon or AliExpress as well. And better quality than the one you got; I had no trouble with mine breaking as I was manipulating it. It's used for things like heated car seats. You can get it in different resistance ratings (ohm/m), so you can select the one that's the best fit for your desired wattage and length.

    Paint it white (both the tube and dew shield outside) - it solve most dew problems. Radiative cooling is much more affecting dark and black surfaces then white, so your dark tube and it's black parts when under clear sky literally trying to equalize the temperature with the space. Paint it white and due to lack of radiative cooling it will stay at air temperature and will only be covered with a dew when there is a fog everywhere outside. I never use heaters because it's bad idea to deliberately add heat streams into the tube, distortions like that are clearly visible with focault test on star or defocused bright star image. Thanks and good luck with clear sky!

    • @dougcox835
      @dougcox835 Місяць тому

      The heat applied should be only enough to keep the hardware above the dewpoint. If done properly it shouldn't be enough energy to cause air currents. White paint only puts off the inevitable cooling. Can't hurt though. Maybe even wrap some foam around the tube while you're at it.

      I think my issue with this is that far too often you see warnings and cautions about edge case issues when common sense should apply. In this case I don't think it would really matter anyway. It's just a string of resistors. It won't last for years and years anyway. One of the resistors will break long before the acid manages to etch through the wire.

      It's rosin. Here's what Wikipedia says: Rosin (/ˈrɒzɪn/), also called colophony or Greek pitch (Latin: pix graeca), is a solid form of resin obtained from pines and some other plants, mostly conifers, produced by heating fresh liquid resin to vaporize the volatile liquid terpene components. It is semi-transparent and varies in color from yellow to black. At room temperature rosin is brittle, but it melts at stove-top temperature. It chiefly consists of various resin acids, especially abietic acid.[1] The term colophony comes from colophonia resina, Latin for "resin from Colophon" (Ancient Greek: Κολοφωνία ῥητίνη, romanized: Kolophōnía rhētínē),[2][3] an ancient Ionic city.[4] It is an FDA approved food additive.[5]
