The Gallery of Miracles and Madness - Charlie English, in conversation with Libreria
This is an event recording from Thursday, 30th September at 7pm BST
At the end of the first world war, the German doctor Hans Prinzhorn began building a collection of art by psychiatric patients. The raw and powerful art would inspire a generation of modernist greats, including: Max Ernst, Paul Klee, Salvador Dali and André Breton. However, by the 1930s Prinzhorn’s artist-patients and their creations had attracted the attention of Hitler.
Famously rejected from art school, Adolf Hitler saw modernism’s interest in madness as a threat. Once in power, he ordered modernist art to be stripped from German galleries and publicly shamed alongside examples of Prinzhorn’s collection, in exhibitions of ‘degenerate’ art.
This was the curtain-raiser to a programme of mass-killing against ‘degenerate’ humans. By 1941, 70,000 psychiatric patients had been exterminated in a campaign that served as a prototype for the Final Solution
Charlie joins Libreria to discuss this astonishing story of a culture war that paved the way for Hitler’s first mass-murder programme.
About the author:
Charlie English is a former journalist for The Guardian. A fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the author of books, The Book Smugglers of Timbuktu and The Snow Tourist.

What are they saying in "hyperspace?" Name a topic of "the soul;" think of something "of the soul" that isn't tied to this reality! Everything is thought of as "tending" the living and that is absurd! There is no picking up the lingo of "hyperspace" and slinging it around; nobody has brought back a single transcendental concept, they've all been tied to this shit show!

Minute 33: there is no such thing as a bad trip. Exactly what I always say to people who are affraid of psylocibine because 'it can be bad' I consider psychedelica as a sacred medicine. A sacred experience that require good preparation and the right intention and setting. I got rid of a 'stone' I carried with me for years. Was freed from this trauma when I took a small dose of truffels together with a friend in nature. Still thankfull ❤️

I was wondering how many minutes from the very beginning of her speech she would start talking about Turkey and spill out her grudge/rancour. Bingo. No surprise! It only lasted 7 minutes for her to attack Turkey in a span of time that Sandel already used its 5 minutes. Namely in two minutes Şafak did what her mission has ordered for decades. Profesor Sandel, there is a saying in Turkish: "ELİFi görse Mertek sanır! (meaning rougly, not know one and from another)" Accordingly, she/they know nothing about Turkey and distort(s) the facts. Plus she is the one who can never be ecpected to agree with your basic attitude towards "unencumbered self". She has her own certainities but pretends to support "anything goes". She sells the ideas stolen from the west to you back, like her other similar ones. They have never had a holistic and original imagination of history. So, she is just a delar/seller. Do you think the world was a wonderful place before the events that led the Frankfurt school to advocate that history does not necessarily move forward, but also backwards/multiple directions? Even this shows that deep down you actually accept the progressive/linear conception of history. And if you believe that something that human race get at a point in the history must be taken as sole parameter according to which everything else/ideas/politics/ages/societies must be valued, that is your obsession of CERTAINTY! Therefore, if you are really frank about your "perception of liquid history, pluralism" you must also accept that no historical moment can be unique standard for all ages backwards or onwards. Who did cereate atomic bomb and used it killing millions? Turkey? Or "the FREE WORLD?" Why even in London, as you mentioned, there is still a huge gap between "well-off and worst off?" even after 5 century long-enlightenment/humanism? How many more centuries will it take for you to reach full equality (again at the cost of exploiting / massacring millions). By the way, "What is Enlightenment?" Let me give you an answer: just a magic/garbage/rhetoric...

thank you very much, really interesting! The republican politicians are not out, bc either they want a different state and not a republic, or they are compromised to a third party or government, or simply are egoistic wan.ers. If I would be Putin or Xi, now I would like to buy 1 or 2 democratic senators and compromise them. Some republicans and press people already seem to be under some influence. Money, relatives, friends, personal orientation, browser history or mails can be pretty convincing mediums to put some pressure on any people. And it is sooooo much cheaper than a B2 bomber or an aircraft carrier. ..... and perfect without any visible pressure. A democracy and republic can be easily destroyed if you find a few willing and important people to help. And it goes faster than many may think. Look at Trump, his helpers and the thereofere indoctrinated lunatics and what they have done in such a short period. Take care bout your republic, democracy and education for all. A big, big middle class is the easiest way to assure this and prosperity. ............................... Now, with the sword of Justice over Trumps head, please look out, that there is no seperation of states. Trump finally might look for asylum in Florida et al. .............................. It s good and super, that there are so many people and honest democrats and republicans who are willing to fight for democracy, the republic, justice and equality. Like you did it here with this conversation. So thanks again!

That's not exactly correct. Trump has people's back when they can protect him. There are bigger fish in the sea and he doesn't want eaten by them. Example: Saudis were able to do what they liked, while ex-social media influencer Trump turned his back. For Russia too, among others. Also, theres unfortunately going to be a big backlash soon against people of middle eastern decent. Worse than the early 2000's. Especially with the rise of white nationalists currently.

I disagree. He doesn't have anyone's back. It may appear that he does, and he will defend them fiercely while he still has a need or use for them, but he's steadily building an arsenal of dirt to use against them in the future, when he hits the discard phase. Fortunately there are bigger fish that will take action when the courts and Congress fail to. If he truly wielded the power he thinks he has, he would have left the country. Instead, he's being discarded by those he thought he owned or garnered favor with. Yes, he will absolutely push racial (any) division trying to fend off his fate.
