Basically the capacitor stores some of the power and discharges effectively removing unwanted fluctuations and providing a smoother power supply.

But he did explain it. The capacitor can only pass certain AC frequencies, based on the value of cap selected. In this case, the whine of the motor caused by the oscillation of the AC waves in a frequency that are in the audible range are passed to ground. Its the same thing when you have a capacitor in your tone knob on your guitar or stereo. Adjusting the potentiometer allows more and more of the unwanted frequencies to pass to ground instead of in the signal.

Thanks @deang5622, not sure why your comment was removed. Usual garbage youtube censorship, but i totally see what you and dream.big.dreams are getting at. Makes way more sense to me… i was thinking there was some feedback maybe from the motor magnetic field that required this when it in normal operation, but what you mention in regards to collapse of the magnetic field just makes 100% sense to me immediately given the sudden collapse of any magentic field will send a reverse current through the system, and it totally makes sense why a capacitor can deal with that. I imagine there is a way with a diode as well. Is the reason for using a capacitor to act like a small rechargable battery in the system? I guess the issue now that i think about it is a diode will prevent a motor from going in reverse, this setup handles the instant drop in magnetic field no matter which way current was flowing through the system…

@ Eddy currents can energize the coil (wire windings of the motor) to spike the circuit with electricity. Not a good thing!

Basically, the capacitor filters out the high frequency noise by removing in frequencies that don’t match its own resonance frequency If it hits the resonance frequency on the other hand… let’s just say you won’t be seeing your motor anymore
