Motley collection of paragliding adventures and some programming screencasts thrown in for good measure.
Step-by-by: Flying out to a cloud and getting high
Hunting for clouds is one of the fun parts of paragliding. Here’s my progression from the ridge out to a cloud forming on the flats:
00:10 - WJ and I spot the cloud
00:40 - Heading out to the cloud
01:20 - Spotting another cloud forming to the right, exciting!
01:45 - Hitting sink, pushing on bar to get out of it. Hoping that’s the sink being blown to me from the edge of the cloud thermal.
02:51 - First hint of lift, yes!
03:10 - Start turning to core the thermal
03:30 - Going up nicely now
04:20 - Still going up!
I eventually got high enough to continue along the edge of the flats, where the ridge starts, and connect to the next cloud. We slowly made our way from Porterville, to Kardoesie, I landed WJ went on to Citrusdal. Epic flight!

Paragliding from Overseer's Hut

Early morning hike up from Cecilia Forest to Overseer's Hut with Klip & Hotz. A *long* walk with the glider up - some good ground handling practise - and then some amazing flying. Strong thermals very early already and easily got above 1000m ASL. Thanks Klip for taking the initiative & inviting us along.

Table Mountain paraglide after the storm

0:10 Easy launch, after waiting ~30 min for the wind to drop. 11:34 Collapse. I was a bit timid on the reaction (I was on rear risers), so didn't stop the collapse. 25:50 Landing at Glen Club field.

Paragliding high above Table Mountain on a summer day
Such a long run-way 😅
haha, good ground handling practise
such a short video .......when is part II coming?
😂 he can't use the battery excuse again
Where did you land?
How early did you go?
Takeoff was 08:00 in the morning
What a magical footage! Is it slope landable after crossing over?
Yes, there are lots of good landing options.
Awesome cloud surfing day 🙌🍬
Was this today? At what time?
great cobra🤟
Thanks, was at the limit. Had to get on speedbar to move forward. Once off the ridge it was good 😀
Thank you from Moscow. Where your channel from?>
Lovely 🎉
Where is this site?
Cape Town, South Africa
Magical Malan. So cool surfing "under the clouds" I especially like the last bits and the beeps
Spectacular! Love it. Always a mind-bender to take off and flay around the mountain to fly the "other side" ;)
Epic flight 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
🍬 see even Constantiaberg was provided the beeps
I like how you close your turns on the light days, makes for serious scratching
This is a different line...and a nice one ! Now added to the to-do-list...
Did you experience any turbulence at LionsHead? Which direction was the find from there?
Zero turbulence. As far as I could tell there was nil wind at Lion's Head. Slight updraft from thermals here and there, but no meteo wind.
@@malanj1 that is interesting to hear, on that day I was on the other side of LionsHead and felt similar experiences as you described. So there really must have been nil wind 😅
Compensation is not too little, it is too early and too much. Due to your compensation trial, wing continued rotating.
Well done! We had also some nice TM flights today.
This is my kind of flying! Where is this lovely location?
Do you have a track of this flight? It would be fun to view in Google Earth.
Just magic ? so jealous
A great example of thermal hunting using patience and skill. I enjoyed the full, unedited flight. well done.
Lekker man lekker 🍬👌 Those climbs look like a jol (1600m 😮💨) and making Hey Joes is just the 🍒 (erm erm Beer) on top to finish the day.
wow, great flight. locals may not be happy you landed on a crowded beach, could have landed at that height at Glen Club, or the grassy promenade. But as I was just in Cape Town very jealous I was not able to do such an amazing flight.
Very capable piloting skills indeed!
Race against the sun 😅
Jip - was so lifty, I had to big ears & wingover to get down in time :)
Awesome flight
I have watched a couple of your flights from Table Mountain, and it did not appear turbulent after the launch.? When I come to Cape Town in February I hope I will be able to get your advice. It would be a bucket list flight for me.
This flight wasn't very turbulent, but you never know with Table Mountain. On a previous flight I had to do quite a bit to keep the wing open and stable; ua-cam.com/video/QonSzf8SQog/v-deo.html @christophermiller353
Yes I see what you mean@@malanj1
Was this flight early in the morning? Was there any turbulence launching from Table Mountain, it appeared smooth?
Australian pilot coming to South Africa in Feb. Just hoping that flying weather will be good at that time? Also, I am concerned about safety as I will be traveling on my own.
There's some great flying in Feb. It gets pretty thermic. Register as a visiting pilot with SAHPA - www.sahpa.co.za/ Also; if you're in the Cape Town area, get in contact with the Glen Paragliding Club. It's a great community and you'll find people to give you lifts & talk weather forecasts etc. See you in the sky!
is that the usual TM launch site?
The most common launch is the front-face. This is the Gulley launch - www.glenclub.co.za/table-mountain-gully/
that was me at launch in the vid and I asked where are you going to land and you said the glen in camps bay
haha - well, guess it was a good day for distance :-D and fortunately my wife was willing to pick me up ;)
Oh man, just watched the full video on my train through France. Guess that's how much I miss flying😅
Haha. It was a good day :-D
What a day!!!!
So beautiful!
what a dream!!
Well done Malan!
Scratching
Always love seeing these, Malan!
Lekker Malan. What a day 🎉
Keep it up
Nice 1
Well done on reaching your paragliding goal 🙌🤛. Awesome to tick that one off 🍾 I think it may well be the new record for most pilots as Barry said Kommetjie was going to run out of beer 😅. Well done on making the NW ridge, that Rush of yours has an impressive glide in it 👏 and you picked a good line from Chappies.
Nice. I have yet to connect to Komm Ridge you lucky man Congrats on a good safe line
It was close - it's a straight 6km glide, I connected with the ridge at 120m ASL, and my pre-committed turnaround height was 100m... so just just made it.
Wow....could see it coming from a distance ....in my beste Engels 🍻
Nice ! I hope you got some on-board footage as well ? You have a very special lady, allows you to fly on Christmas day.
Great footage :)
Has to be the most scenic flight possible over Cape Town! Incredible views man!
Nice quality and stable camera work MAlan.👍
