    I like to shoot the M6 - when on a weekend trip. Just for fun. Technically it’s a disaster from my point of view. A Nikon FM2 or Pentax MX is way smarter than the M system. Has anyone find out why the tripod screw is not in line with the lens? The disgusting fiddling if you load the film. Missing light metering of the M6. No holder for the film box at the backside, instead this useless iso wheel without any function?

    I agree with the points you are making. In my opinion different camera systems just shine in different scenarios. A scenario where you would need a zoom lens or absolutely nail focus on 1,4 while working with clients/models is just not perfect for a Rangefinder. That's more of SLR territory. Street photography, zone focusing or documenting life in general at f5.6- 8 that's where you would probably get the most out of a rangefinder.

    I shoot Arca-Swiss 4x5/8x10, a Mamiya 7 II, a Leica M3 and an M6. Also digital. I use a Sekonic light meter. I think that this is simple. You should have stopped shooting film a long time ago. It’s just that film photography and you, certainly rangefinder photography, are a bad fit. There’s nothing new in what you’re saying, and I stopped watching after about eight minutes.

      Thanks for taking the time though ☺️ I know it’s not computer science that I’m sharing but it’s just my own take on shooting the M system on film. I feel a lot of people coming from the new generation don’t know about it.

    Can‘t agree more about the way to work with the M-Leica (as some already commented, the lightmeter is a little different). Everyone has to make the own decission about keeping a camera or moving on, for me I always distinguish what it is for and the fun part / being proud of an Image is more with an M than any other camera. This is purely emotional and honestly if you have to deliver for a job, the save route makes total sense. But even more though a M could be the difference for casual privat work…. Hope you don‘t regret one day selling both.

      You’re absolutely right, the M system is a beautiful one, sometimes it just doesn’t fit for specific projects or types of photography. For documentary stuff it’s still one of the best for sure.

    @07:30 your point on the framelines is incorrect. Leica makes external viewfinders like viooh that show the 90mm framelines. Problem solved. 2nd there are many great lenses including by voigtlander. No one wants zoom lens on rangefinder. Again incorrect. This is why photographers use two cameras. You don’t use a viewfinder or use two focal lengths simultaneous and complain?

    Woah, this really surprises me regarding the aperture thing. I always thought you want to shoot without the whole bokeh look on intention. You’re saying ‘we’ a lot - you got a mouse in your pocket? lol I think your points are valid but your negatives using the cameras largely stem for things they weren’t intended for, the M system is primarily a reportage system, not a portrait camera so shooting it wide open is more for low light when you need the light, not really for shallow depth of field and dreamy portraits. Maybe you should try the R-E or R6 or something. I’ll take that M7 though, my favorite camera of all by far.

    • @TobiasHolzweiler

      The M7 will hold a very special place in my heart for sure. And I believe it’s one of the best cameras when it comes to documentary work so I totally agree with you. it just doesn’t fit my approach for photography anymore. As someone who's almost exclusively shot with rangefinders his entire life, I think you're dead on to why this is demanding system vs a "regular" camera. I think these cameras were designed for more documentary/photojournalism type projects. I personally do a lot of street photography and am comfortable with manual/zone focusing. More than actively focusing, it's just about framing and having the right settings to make the image you have in your head. Definitely try something like a Q3 though, I think you'd enjoy how it merges the best of both worlds (albeit, with only 1/2000 max shutter speed and fixed lens)/.

    • @TobiasHolzweiler
      @TobiasHolzweiler 2 дні тому

      You’re absolutely right! The range finder is very demanding but once you’ve figured it out it’s breeze to shoot street. I own the Q1 since 2018 and I will probably never sell it, I love the camera so much - it truly matched both worlds

    • @TobiasHolzweiler
      @TobiasHolzweiler 2 дні тому

      Thanks for your comment Edwin! :) to be honest I don’t think too much, everything comes very natural. I like eye-level a lot and therefore tend to shoot it very often. When a potential photograph is lacking something I try to shift angles :)

      So if you selling/sold m6 & m7 what have you replaced them with ?

    • @uwetrenkner9716
      @uwetrenkner9716 4 години тому

      If you have an flip out monitor at your camera, its way easier to shoot 10cm above the ground. Thats what I like about digital. With my M6 I really have to force myself to go for lower angles. And 98% of the shots, its on eye level. I think this is part of the rangefinder aesthetic.

    With the M6, the size of the metered area is dependent on the lens on the camera. For a 28mm lens it is quite large within the viewfinder, whereas a 135 it is very small. Essentially it is center weighted and the metering circle is 75% of the frameline for the lens you’re shooting with.

      The Leica metering is also based on a natural grey and reflected light, you might have consider using a separate incident light meter ( light falling on the subject) to get the right exposure .

    • @wojt4spes
      @wojt4spes День тому

      I may be wrong, but what you just said in the second part, with which I agree, contradicts the first part. M6 always measures center weighted no matter the focal length. Sure, 135mm is way more narrow, but still, it’s not a spot meter when making a 135mm frame - it is compared to 28mm, but no one does that really 😅

    @husshardan3511 2 дні тому

    @4:31 saying the camera meters for the entire frame is incorrect. The simplest way to see this is to remove the lens and cock the shutter. You will then see a circular disk on the shutter from where it meters. So it actually is a very heavily weighted center spot meter. Same on the M6, M7, M-P, and the new M6. Check the owner’s manual, it explains it all there. It uses a 12mm central disc to meter from. leica-camera.com/sites/default/files/pm-85045-leica-m6_instructions_en.pdf

    • @cfperwil
      @cfperwil День тому

      Hmm. That must be a misunderstanding. The exposure meter measures at the same part of the image - it doesnt matter what focal length. The pictures in the manual refers to the viewfinder. You must consider that the meter reads from the marking on the shuttercurtain. That marking is always the same. But in the viewfinder it looks like it measures as a spotmeter at 90mm focal length.

    • @husshardan3511
      @husshardan3511 День тому

      @@cfperwil of course the focal length matters. It is a TTL meter, which is why Leica demonstrates how the coverage changes depending on which lens is used in the owner’s manual.

    Hi Tobias .. It's always interesting to see different peoples views, decisions and routes into photography, but .....Why Leica as a first analogue camera, as it is totally possible learn the art / trade /:craft / hobby. I started out in photography back in the late 1970s, and people never had a Hasselblad or Leica as their first camera (obviously no digital cameras then) because it made no sense as my cheap Zenith E (Russian bombproof and very reliable) with 28mm, 56mm and 135mm let me learn nearly everything I needed to learn. I've shot on just about every major brand and format (inc 5x4 & 10x8 Sinar P system and Hasselblad 501c and ELM) .. Fast forward to 2024 and I still prefer shooting with cheap and older gear because it is just a box with a shutter and a lens at the end of the day. 2024 also see me becoming a Leica M6 Titanium owner and only because I won it in a prize draw for the princely sum of £20, and it's a camera that I would never of owned if I had to pay the full price for.

I picked up the six back then because I was used to shoot the Leica Q for a couple years and therefore wanted to make my first steps with the M system. Therefore, I don’t think that I was a snob but I was very enthusiastic about the learning a new camera system from Leica :)

      @@TobiasHolzweiler Fair enough. But see, there's the problem - people on the internet overhype some camera, and that drives the price of it sky high. I'll give you an example - why is it that Leica M3, a nearly 70 years old camera, costs 3 or 4 times more on average than the Leica IIIf, which is, other than the mount and few other small defences, the same camera. On the other hand, you are over that, so I'll not beat a dead horse...

    I feel this. I have an M6 but my preference is to shoot my Nikon 35Ti and Canon EOS 7s in combination. Just pointing and shooting is so much more convenient and fun. I have had a lot of expensive cameras, even medium format ones, that I paid a lot for and moved them on because they are impractical and just sit on the shelf. But I'm not quite ready to do this with the Leica. I would rather just enjoy shooting a roll every now and then, maybe once a month, rather than sell it.

    • @TobiasHolzweiler

      I totally see your point, and I see myself in it. To me it feels good to get rid of old gear that I don’t under anymore, even if it’s a Leica. But this has a lot to do with my own approach of trying to live only with the essentials that I need, and this goes way beyond just camera gear :)

      @@TobiasHolzweiler Yeah, I was almost there a few weeks ago. Then I got my results back from a roll I shot on the Leica and I was pretty happy with them and decided to keep it. One day I'll get there. It's really not worthy of its price IMHO. And when people say it's mechanical and so it'll last forever etc, I just laugh. Some $100 point and shoots from the 90's have lasted this long and still work fine.
