When strong players are playing even stronger players, it's known to be good practice to move a little slower than your opponent, since you would logically use more time to calculate the same lines. This is something that is very instinctive to top players. Slow at the start especially in critical moments, since they're confident they could convert a winning advantage even with just a second on the clock, given increment. It's hard to see all this as a lower rated spectator tho, since you can't see how much they're calculating, all you see is clock times and you relate it to your own lower elo play where accuracy is of way lesser importance.

That said he did use a lot of time in these games and comments on that fact a few times in German "ich bin so langsam" " I am so slow"

I'm pretty sure Ding and Hikaru's score is close in classic, correct me if I'm wrong. Also saying time based is not skill based is ridiculous, sounds like you're tilted after losing on time. Watch Alireza play with 30 seconds left and beat nepo who has like 8 minutes, Magnus winning in time scramble, or ding winning world champion because of time pressure. Time plays a massive role, especially in classic. To dismiss that means you really don't know much about chess, considering how much of it is intuition.
