Thank you Richard. My Great Grands on Mums side are there on the older side. I wish I knew exactly where. Am only up the road, you have inspired me to visit.
Ahh thank you
Our firm built on the land behind Marsh Farm , access from Whitley Drive. Going up Buck Lane from Carrington Lane, at the corner of which a policeman was killed in a traffic accident, in the row of terraced on the left lived the eccentric Jimmy OHara, he of flat cap, ruddy cheeks, long strides and huge boots, a contemporary of mine at school eighty years ago. The land described on the left as the village Green was land compulsory given to the local authority- formerly part of Openshaws Nursery- as was the land opposite described as used for off road parking on which we built the modern semi detached houses visible. The intention was to widen Buck Lane to match the modern Dumber Lane/Glebelands Rd. There was an outcry when to achieve this it was proposed to rebuild the Buck Inn further back in the car park, We also demolished the farm next to the Buck and built the existing shops.Neil Jones.
Thank you for this information Regards Rick
Thank you Richard, have long admired this pretty Church but had no idea it went back to 1394.. I have learned so much more too.
Thank you for your comment
I have a painting of a barn in the grounds of Ashton New Hall, alongside the path up from the Stocks in which grave robbers used to hide- according to my Aunt, who lived on Ashton Lane. Neil Jones.
Thank you for adding to the history of our area
Really interesting thank you.. Sale would get hit in WW2 because the bombers would look for the moon shining off the Liverpool Estuary. They were told to follow the Mersey inland to hit Metro Vickers at Trafford Park making munitions! My Great Grands were market gardeners in Sale Moor and would sell at the weekend market at the side of the Town Hall. My Grandad stood on that roof as as "spotter" for enemy planes coming in and would wind the siren. So much local history, Richard, loved this.
Thank you for your reply
Ben said he had been there 24 years. Maybe that was around the time the whole row was condemned as unfit by the Local Authority- there was an outcry against the proposed demolition. Stanley Brownhill a local decorator kept his tackle in a shed next to no.1. And Elm Grove query - Holtby - related to Billy Holtby? Neil Jones.
Thanks for adding to this story
There's a new pub in the village its called fibber Magee's, check it out.
Loving the content rick.
Thank you
Looks so much better back then, I remember Howarths the toy and bike shop, Freddy Hills green grocers , Whits food shop and lots more
Lived at Station House 1952-1963
Hi Rick, good video. as an AOM 45 yr resident, I used to live in a flat at 50 the Avenue, sale (oak field house) set back with long drive way. unique sized building for the surrounding houses. I always wondered its history. The lobby inside is huge with a massive old fire place if i recall and the stair case to all the flats wrapping around the outer walls.
Thank you for your kind comments Regards Rick
Howarths Toy shop, Clark’s the barbers (slasher Clark as known, all gone
Born & Bred Sale Moor thanks for sharing 👍
Subbed 👍
Ain’t this the place where started Manchester city?
There was a young barmaid from Sale, on her breasts were the prices of ale. And on her behind, for the sake of the blind, were the same prices written in Braille. Used to love drinking in the Cheshire Midland in Hale back in the day - also The Griffin and The Stamford Arms in Bowdon.

Bull 😂
Love the video Richard. I have been passing the Legh Arms for the past twenty eight years. Next month I am taking a group of friends there visiting a different Sale pub every month. I shall make sure they all see this video.
Thanks for your comment, I was in yesterday afternoon for lunch with the wife after watching the Marathon.
Very interesting, I know the area well but had no idea about its history.
Thank you for watching
Thumbs up.(born there.ha ha.)Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
Shame you couldn’t have ventured further into Altrincham, sadly so many pubs have disappeared or repurposed such as The Grapes on Regent road where I worked for over 10 years 1990-2001. As a side note my grandma worked as a cleaner at the wagon and horses in sale back in the 70s, she often took me in there as a toddler, happy memories, thanks
Thank you for your comment, My intention was to do a part 2 so I’m going to do it, what former pub’s would you like me to cover.
What an utterly amazing crew and dedicated man to get them honoured. Peace and love.
Thanks for your kind comment
I have often wondered if those double bays were added at a later date to Ashton Old Hall. And I'm curious about the slates on the side of the house!
Really interesting video! I'm curious about the basement, may I ask if this was accessed via the back of the house - the part which was built at a different time? Do you know what was on that site before this Hall? Could it be that back part of the house is in fact older than the front? Often, older houses were 'refronted' in order to keep up with the times. Perhaps the basement was a jail / have a connection with the Buck? Just a thought :) (I used to live in the village and I have always admired the Hall!)
There were rumours of The Buck and St. Martin's Church being connected with an underground tunnel... I've heard since that there is no evidence of this, however could there have been a tunnel to this Ashton New Hall instead.
Hey Rick just seen this, great video! My Grandparents Osborne and Fanny Harvey ran the Bay Malton years ago, maybe the 20's (?) my Dad and Aunties were born there, Ozzie would turn in his grave if he knew what was happening to his pub.
Thanks John, let’s hope you get your wish in our current project Mersey M.
The photo you featured is of the house at Wellfield Nursery, not Macum Cottage. It was built in 1900 on the site where Wellfield Juniors is now, facing the park and was owned by my great grandmother, Sarah Yarwood.
I lived 2 doors down from the school!

Never knew that plaque was there. This church was also a starting point for me and my mates when we were kids. I had many friends from the st martins road area. I played golf at Ashton on Mersey so the walk from Dumber to the course was down that cobbled street. Love your videos. What’s the history of the house next door behind the wall opposite the stocks?. Farmhouse maybe?
Thank you so much for your kind words and thanks for watching. Have a look at my video on church lane and this should answer your question. Please feel free to ask me any questions you might have. The next video I have on Ashton on Mersey is very historic
Also, I used to live the DIY shop. The guy who owned it was like something from last of the summer wine. I remember going in to look at his fish and he was nice with us kids. Shame it went. Was a great old building.
Great to see where the tunnel may have been. Great to see someone from my home town looking into these things. Ashton on Mersey is such a small place. Iv been researching myself for a while but it’s difficult. Great work.👍🏽
I lived opposite where the obelisk stood. In the 80’s and 90’s . Iv found this on a map before but have never seen the photos. Iv often wondered what happened to it. Our garden was full of unusual stone in the grass that had no place being there which I thought was strange as it was said to be farmland. Love your video. The cottage was always a talking point when I was a kid.
Thank you for watching and adding to this story.
My husband tells me that he used to play in the air raid shelters that were there before Wellfield School.
I have been asked about this so thanks for sharing, Also a viewer confirmed there was a well and someone tragically drowned.
Iv heard there was a well in the field and maybe the shelter replaced it.
Another interesting video. Thanks for posting Richard.
Thank you Stephen
There was a tree in the grounds of the old rectory that had a curse on it, when it was cutdown a local resident Charles Irvine, campaigned to save it and climbed it to stop the felling. Don’t know who was supposed to have placed the curse on the tree.
Thanks for adding to the story and keeping local history alive.
I’m pretty sure that Macum cottage had a name change during the 1960’s - it was named St David’s.
I will post the censuses tomorrow which will show its Macum Cottage. But thank for your input and thanks for watching.
Thanks for posting. Very interesting. Betty Royle, was my Great, Great Grandmother
Wow that’s great and thank you for letting me know, I will add the censuses tomorrow. Thank you for watching
@@richardainsworth4421 I will look forward to more of your Posts. Thanks again
excellent
Thanks Paul
another very interesting video of the area Richard
Glad you enjoyed it thank you
I enjoyed this quick tour as I have ancestors buried here and am planning a visit. Looks well maintained unlike my town's victorian one.
Thank you for watching
😡 *Promosm*
Good video Rick - thanks for posting. You mentioned the name Gratrix? This may be a local name as there is a Gratrix Lane situated off Northenden Road. I attended Worthington Road School back in the late 50s and often walked home down Gratrix Lane. Back then it consisted of an unmade surface of coal shale with many pot holes. Happy days!
Thank you for your contribution Regard’s Rick
Top stuff Rick, love the history
Thanks Jason
Really enjoyed this one, thanks. Lived in Sale for the first 58 years of my life and never once went down there even though I’ve passed it many, many times. The Nat West Bank was on the front of the road back then, the bank I used. I vaguely remember there being a large property on the corner of Washway Road and Harboro Way (a few yards away from Barwick Place) but I can’t bring to mind what the story behind that was….although maybe I’m just imagining that of course
Thanks for taking the time to watch and really appreciate your comment. New video on Sale Moor and the Legh Arms coming out in a couple of days.
@@richardainsworth4421 thanks, I’ll be watching out for that one.
Heartbreaking about the Waggon and the Queens, bought my first pint in the Bridge back in the 70's.
Thanks for your input, I bought my first pint in the Waggon
As has been previously mentioned, Marsh Farm used to have a shop round the back where we’d go, occasionally, to buy ice creams (I think the sign outside was for Lyon’s Maid ice cream). The gardening and DIY (Four candles) shop at the end of the village was formerly the doctors surgery (drs Turner and Shelswell were two I remember, the former being our family doctor).
Thanks for adding your story
Only saw this memorial today while out with my daughters on the park. I never knew this happened its fascinating. Brave men 👍
Thank you for watching
I was one of the grave-diggers/groundsmen there for over two years. Lovely in the Summer, serious graft in the Winter.
Thanks for your input Lee
Thank-you Rick for another interesting video; very atmospheric on that autumnal day. Great stuff!
Thank you Stephen
Another great vid, Rick. This one's closer to home for me than some others. My mum used to clean for Mrs Butterworth. I went with her a few times. I remember the attic being up some extra stairs and rather than having access in the ceiling it was actually a walk-in with full sized doors. Ah, life was much simpler then! All the best matey.
