Irish Wash Woman ~ Duple
Irish Wash Woman is an American Country Dance found in Asa Willcox's book of Figures from 1793, and interpreted by Keller & Sweet in "A Choice Selection of American Country Dances of the Revolutionary Era". Originally a triple minor dance, this version is a proper duple minor.
The tune is a traditional one and the music was synthesized by Colin Hume's software.
The animation plays at 112 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance is slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

    For the record, the dance was composed for the 18th birthday of Melanie Doyle, a young dancer. The first figure was inspired by her teenage crush on dolphins, in the second the leading dancers trace the figure "18", and the third represents the symbolic "Key of the Door". The dance is set to the tune "Michael Turner's Waltz".

      I wrote my own program, and then I write files which describe the movements of each dance. The program (source code), and some documentation is available online: upadouble.info/dancexml/ The dance files are a simple xml format and contain metadata describing the dance as well as a description of how each role (M1, L1, M2, L2, ...) moves through time. I'm afraid the program is not user-friendly (it is "me-friendly", designed for my use with me in mind). It was written for a unix like environment, (both the Mac and the PC have ports that mean you can build unix programs on them). If these comments don't scare you off, I'm happy to try to help you through the process.

    I would say that the words "cross over" (for couple 1) implies a place swap for couple 1 (this was not always printed in the description). There is always enough time before the hands across for two balances forwards and back to the counterpartner. For the place swap, I always announce half two-hand-turn, then the balance right and left for couple 1 (for this, the hands remain clasped) . Finally, the full chain.

    • @georgewilliams4392
      @georgewilliams4392 Місяць тому

      The music was printed with the dance. It used to be available online, but the original has disappeared. Try Bentley's "The Fallibroome Collection, Vol. 5" (or the more recent combined work just called "The Fallibroome Collection"). It has the music printed too. The Assembly Players has a CD called "The Fallibroome Ball" which contains this. It should be available from cdss.org

    I may have that earlier European reference for this piece if you're still looking for it. A notebook from Jambes (modern day Belgium) from 1778 has a song of this name. The author of the notebook is one Joseph Gaspard Wandembrile. You can find a transcript of it here: www.troubadourwallon.be/Manuscrits%20XVIII.en.htm

However, that's not what the book says: A2 1-2 R-hands across 3-4 Circle left 5-6 Circle right 7-8 L-hands across, ease out into... I presume what is intended is to go as far as the music allows, and since it's a slip jig I'd think that would be a bit more than half...

      USA is an abbreviation used for Up-a-double, Siding, Arming. I style of dance quite common in the early Playford editions as well as the Lovelace manuscript. It has nothing to do with the country which also uses those initials.
