Art Social Media is Imploding
Hey, everyone!
Today we're talking about the absolute disaster that is currently happening for artists on social media. It seems like all of the long-standing platforms are disintegrating all at once, and people are left scrambling to figure out what to do and where to go. The U.S. is banning TikTok, Pinterest is dying, Facebook and Instagram are going to hell, and X... is X - so where does that leave us?

Artists, Let's Get a Life

Hey, everyone! Today I am ranting about nothing (just kidding). This week I'm talking about the rising lack of hobbies I've noticed in people, and the rising in-authenticity in some art, because of that lack of hobbies. I'm just saying - maybe we should stop scrolling so much, and start engaging in activities to help inspire our art. Are people too online one? And is it hurting our art? Maybe s...

Hey, everyone! Today we're talking about art tutorials from Xiaohongshu (also XHS or REDnote) because they are taking TikTok by storm. People on TikTok are swearing by these XHS art tutorials and saying they're lifesaver, but I'm not so sure. I'm glad people have found something that helps them learn, though! Hey, everyone! Just asking a simple question today - are we, as artists, entitled to attention on social media? A lot of people get discouraged when they don't get any likes or views on their art - but should we let that get to us? And do we deserve attention just because we made something? Being ignored online is difficult - but maybe some of us feel like we DESERVE to do well online. What do ...

I'll talk a little about the evolution of Inktober, the plagiarism allegations, and talk about the criticisms surrounding its commercia...
I have tried to use red note for a few years (i'm chinese)it's quite problematic when it comes to copyright...i hope people would translate and read through their terms and conditions about how they use content that have been uploaded on their platform, personally i dont use it. at this point i feel like i'm just gonna start a blog... 🥺😮💨
Social media is so exhausting and before its final collapse and I feel has been for years. I miss what it used to be, but I have hope we will have that again. I’ve mainly been on Bluesky, UA-cam and discord. I am also tired of going around and around to see what sticks. I had no idea Instagram was using peoples selfies to make ads wtf??
I miss how great instagram was for posting art, it sad to see the quick downfall of these platforms :( but I also feel like not only are the platforms changing but the art space within social media is also changing drastically and quickly.
i wish i could use bluesky more but i do alot of like animation stuff and the size limit on files tends to make it super diffcult to work with , though its totally understandable with the history and present state of the site
People never needed software to steal art before so why is that the narrative now?
3:37 If I wanted to speak to a robot, I'd call Koodo mobile
I heard you can skirt TikTok's ban by using a VPN to create a new account claiming to be from another country. The art community could come together a make a fund-supported art Booru. There are tons already, but they seem to mostly be hentai. Maybe add some anti-scraping & AI poisoning to it. Old forums are another option. The problem is finding an active one & getting everyone to go there.
Like Pinterest & Facebook, DeviantArt has gone full AI. I guess people don't super trust ArtStation anymore & it's really just for video game art. Not really sure about Pixiv or Tumblr because I can't remember my passwords. Twitter, TikTok, & UA-cam are too toxic & need live moderation. Etsy went from a place to sell your art to a TEMU clone. Anything you post on Instagram is unlikely to be seen. FurAffinity is only for furryies. Elfwood shut down a long time ago. PhotoBucket & Flicker fell off when they tightened storage limits & started doing subscription fees. Only place left I can think of is Reddit & BlueSky.
my sketchbooks are far from chunky because it seems too impractical, but sometimes i glue random stuff like food packaging in mine as a way of remembering future me that i tasted something new or what i liked at the time! But to each their own, what actually makes me frustrated are those perfect "sketchbooks" where each spread has amazing composition and finished ilustrations.
Thinking of using my website…but also UA-cam. I have access to the community options.
If you rent a server, there are social media clone apps you can install to create any kind of community
@@jolanxbl-ai Or they could just use a forum. Those are still a thing, whether on a shared host or discord
theyre significantly smaller than most mainstream platforms by a longshot but i like pillowfort (this sort of tumblr-reddit type hybrid) and cara (art-centric twitter). theyre not without issues but both are explicitly anti-AI. pillowfort is especially nice as they allow NSFW content, which can be easily filtered. but they can be a pain to learn/use though, and their smaller userbases will likely be a turn-off for those whose income relies on being an artist online
likewise there’s decentralized options (ie mastodon) and independent website options (ie neocities or even hosting your own website entirely) but those are also fairly complex to understand and get going for your typical user. likewise they also have diminishing returns
DeviantArt was huge in the early 2000s! Perhaps artists should start moving there again? It has its share of AI-generated art, but it’s uploaded by real people, as far as I know.
DeviantArt is a cesspool of stolen photos and churned-out Ai deepfakes & 'depicted as 18' being sold as 'Adoptables', basically non-blockchain nfts.
Thanks for your comments, Amanda. CARA is a good alternative. No AI slop is allowed, and the members are thoughtful and congenial. Many different styles of work. The site is run by and owned by artists, so it won't be controlled and manipulated by our current crop of brain-dead billionaires.
No, internet works fine, social media works fine. Technology can't help that Americans have become mentally ill, running around instead of being treated by a shrink in a facility. You can recognize them at their blue hair dye, gobbledygook pronounces, diehard vegan principles even if it destroys their bodies and basically think that the law of nature doesn't apply to humanity.... that biology doesn't exist and everything is a social construct.... totally loopy for sure.
I'm not an artist (yet?) but I've been looking into Pixelfed, it's Instagram but federated, witch means there is no centralized owner to ruin everything. It's kind of confusing but I think that federated apps like Mastodon and Pixelfed are probably the best long-term solutions. Unless bluesky just works out. But I am definitely scared that Bluesky being centralized is more susceptible to bad actors.
I still have a space in deviantArt from the early 2000s but is centuries i don't post anything, plus they seemingly use your art to train AI too
Make a website *please*
we need more protocols and less plataforms, making money from social media goes against its functions, like paying to use public transit
...do you not pay to use public transportation??? Where I live, the big ole giant USA, it's extremely common for public transit to charge a fee... Like we wish it was free and it finally is for kids under 18 in my city but it's definitely not free anywhere I've been or even heard of 😅
@@arioctober im saying that paying for public transit is counterproductive cuz the more you charge the less people use it, it should be free. similarly the more you charge for a website or put ads in it the less people will want to use it
I miss when the internet was websites.
And Webrings
This is 100% my experience alone, do not use me as an example to talk others out of doing art professionally. I'm a tattoo artist, and have never been good at social media, to my detriment. I've been struggling so hard financially, and my creativity has been at an all-time low since starting. I have decided to take a hiatus and suddenly I am having fun doing art again- not for money, no pressure for it to be perfect, just pure make whatever the hell I want without worrying if people will want it as a tattoo or not. And I'm extending that to my art socials also, I will now be refusing to use hashtags, refusing to play any stupid algorithm games, just posting what I want, how I want, when I want, and whoever sees it will see it. It feels so free, I feel like it was a mistake for me to ever try making money with art, it just completely ruined it for me. Slowly falling back into love with art now.
Bluesky, reddit, neocities, own website 🤷🏻♀️
I don't think the social aspect of the internet was doomed to fail from the beginning, because social media didn't exist in the beginning. the internet did just fine for a good ten years before myspace came along. people shared, created, things were good. if all social media collapsed and burned, i think the internet would be a better place. we could go back to each having our own websites. social media sites that centralize all that are kinda like walmart, in the way that it makes it impossible to have a small mom and pop store. the only reason you can't make your own custom bespoke page where you and your artist friends share their work is because everyone will ignore it and still flock to these horrible platforms.
I've been enjoying Bluesky, wanted to move, when I heard Meta's policy updates. I feel like Discord would be the only other option, for art community. I've even gotten a couple of commissions directly from Discord, and I can connect with other creatives in my niche in the visual novel scene. I also enjoy Reddit's smaller communities, because it reminds me of old forums. And I will admit Facebook groups was nice, I loved talking to people with similar interests. It reminded me of my days in university talking to people in my fandoms late at night over in Facebook groups. Hosting my own blog was fun, but it's such a lonely platform, you don't really get engagement like on social media sites. I feel now the pivot to communities might now be focused on niches on websites that cater to one group. And there's also still Forums that are active to this day, like for indie perfume.
Several youtubers I know talks about negative effect of AI...While using AI thumbnails. I don't know what's going on inside their head.
I can only think of 4 "Safe Spaces" for Art on the Internet right now - Newgrounds - Internet Archive - Rule 34 - Create Your Own Personal Website Which is just sad to see
Add Furaffinity to the list lol. It's a bit of a hellsite but they have some pretty strict rules against AI generated content and the community is generally pretty nice. Furries can be weird but they love artists.
@@simons5714 Rule 34 does allow AI Art on Their Website but that is not really a problem because if You do not want to see AI Art You can always just Blacklist the ai_generated and ai_assisted tags and now You will see Zero AI Art and it doesn't even required an Account to use the Blacklist feature which is Awesome It is the best of both worlds in My opnion AI Art fans get to see and post "Their" Art and the rest of the planet get to not see "Their" Art
newgrounds and neocities FOREVAR!!!1!!1!1!!1!!1!!
R34 is completly overrun with AI pictures.

People are warning that posting on Rednote should be aware that a lot of art gets stolen there. Be sure to add a good watermark.
Yes! 💯
Rednote honestly is much worse from a national security perspective, because it actually IS owned by the CCP. It's actually funny to watch tiktok get banned and all of America jumping to the little red book. It's like pouring gasoline over a small fire and expecting it to go out. Nevertheless, artists need an platform where they can share human made art. AI is great at reaching the peaks of our imagination, because it is based on previous artworks done by humans, but it can only go as far as the data it's based on. Hopefully, humanity starts to realise the benifits on humanity being human. :) Robots are fun, but they exist only because we do, and so, I pray we all come together at once and stop this unneeded madness that's happening right now everywhere. Have a great day and stay hopeful about the future!
You're honestly so correct. And it seems like Americans made a big deal about nothing, because the app is already unbanned (at least for now), haha. Thank you so much! I hope you have an amazing day as well!
What do you think about having your own website?
I honestly really like the idea! I think it can just be difficult for people to drive traffic to their sites, so that's probably a big reason it's become less popular.
@@Art-Amanda As well, most sites look copy-paste with the same 3 templates

I miss the days of cheaking Tumblr everyday
I like your shoelaces!
The enshittification of the internet goes hand in hand with the enshittification of commodified art. The internet art space was not in a good spot to begin with. It's a very small inbred echo chamber full of mentally deranged people. Your art is derivative slop from pop culture, like AI art itself. Stop taking yourself so seriously. And recommending red note is a joke.
Are people looking for art anymore though? Kind of seems like social media is past the artist adoption phase because people prefer video entertainment in those spaces and so visual art isn't doing well overall. Not to mention AI is like an annoying sibling that makes us accidentally ignore the other child like with Pinterest. Since it's already an uphill battle I don't imagine we could convince enough artists to dedicate themselves to the spaces to make any one of them a home. Seems like the art and social media thing is straight up over. It's probably just a waiting game now for the next wave of innovation to open a space we can all be free in again. I hope at least. Good vid tho! Definitely an interesting topic.
Come on, we know why they're banning tiktok, wiping an entire nation's bloodlines systematically is "collateral damage", but even mentioning it... that's "problematic"
Great video!
to share my own experiences with consumerism, i made the mistake of thinking that buying more art supplies was magically going to make me more motivated to create art. but only after i began to downscale my collection did i feel relieved from the anxiety, creative mindfog, and the holes in my pockets that having so many useless art supplies caused. now i'm consciously sticking with what mediums i'm skilled at and are the most versatile, from brands i personally trust, and are good for my budget as a broke uni student.
great video, i agree with a lot that is said here, i will say that i don’t think ai art will be that big of an issue as ai generated art already eliminates one of the main purposes of art and that is to love what you create, to love what you draw or put down on the canvas, and i believe that ai art fundamentally can’t have structure unlike real art because it doesn’t understand the fundamentals of art such as color theory, form and perspective, shading, etc. so until ai makes a major breakthrough i don’t think it will kill off art completely, other than that great video though, i agree with what you said here like with ai harming the environment and ai and it’s legal issues
I’ve even seen people try to say Generative AI is a good thing because it produces less co2 than human creatives- but they conveniently leave out that human creatives produce more co2 just by virtue of being carbon based lifeforms. Artists are the carbon that these corporations want to cut back on. If these AI corporations actually cared about the environment, I’d call this ecofascism, but let’s be real, they only really care about money and control. The environmental angle is just performative, neoliberal virtue signalling . They’re just fascists.
Love the point you're making here and definitely agree. I've find my art journey has definitely been staggered by a stress to make my "style" "good enough" but I end up just stressing more than I make art. I'm hoping to start experimenting more with my art and just letting myself learn and make what I want.

it's so weird to actually see a video that genuinely resonates with me? resonates in the sense that this is a subject i have tried to find answers in repeatedly, but nobody has actually tackled. as a preface for perspective, i'm currently 20 and for as long as i could remember i have had a computer as my main source of enrichment. it felt like for the longest time as a kid i was creating so much, but after senior year i feel like i can create nothing without this consistent anxiety and fear on balancing quality of my art and how consumable it is, while yet i am still desperate for something authentic. it doesn't help that while looking for something authentic, i am desperately looking to other artists to find a short-cut to that authenticity because they all seemingly have it figured out. obviously, this has done nothing for me but waste time for years. i suppose it was eventual, i had always been paranoid, but i never expected that "one day" it just felt like the core of who i was and what i loved doing would feel impossible. i had always figured if i could make it into art school that this would be fixed because of the environment there (i have always wanted to make art a career anyway, but just having somewhere to push myself would be a wonderful benefit even if the career never shook out), but even setting up a portfolio to fight for any finances to make it reasonable feels like a nightmare just because of how hard i have crashed out in becoming paranoid about all the aspects my art should embody. after seeing this, i really wanna push myself to try and live more. this will be a incredibly hard fight considering everyone else around me is just as attached to technology to where all the activities they want to do are linked online. i can't blame them, we barely even have the money to get through each month and with schedules that never align, and it certainly feels like the whole world is at your fingertips with said technology, but it frustrates me how that might turn me into an outsider to them because it's almost the basis for how everyone interacts at this point. i am not sure how to balance this, and thus i am very scared to start, but i do agree that one can't derive from a well that doesn't consist of one's own individual experiences even with the help of external work for inspiration. i am curious though on your thoughts when it comes to media though. media we consume can be very inspiring, and obviously consuming any media in mass is detrimental, but how much importance do you think there is in consuming other media when it comes to inspiration? how much would you say lived experience deeply influences ideas in one's practice? what does the balance look like between one's own life and the external media they consume? is one worth prioritizing over the other? its hard to think of clarifying questions to explain what i want to ask precisely, but it seems like inspiration and learning can come from so many places, yet how does one use those resources to confidently forge concepts and ideas for their own work without abandoning practice? it's a question i have never seen tackled before, and while i expect no response, i put it out there somewhat selfishly because of the chances i find something tackling something so important to me to begin with. thank you for putting this video out. this video has meant a lot to me if it isn't obvious at this point (haha..). i hope things are going well for you overall and stay that way for as long as they can <3
First - I want to thank you so much for this comment! Comments like yours are why I still make these videos. These are kind of like diaries of my own current art thoughts and struggles at this point, so it means a lot to me that it resonates with you. I think the anxiety and fear you describe is really common. That feeling of something you love becoming impossible is very relatable. I’ve definitely cried while drawing before because I felt like my art would never be good enough, or express what I needed it to express - yet, I couldn’t stop drawing. I think a lot of our fear comes from imposer syndrome. At a certain point we have to ask ourselves “Do I like my art?” and if the answer is “Yes.”, then that’s all that matters. It's weird, but authenticity is kind of what we make it. If you like something, no matter why, then I would say that thing is authentic to you/your tastes. Try thinking about why you started making art, and try connecting with that “why” again. I think we can get so caught up in improvement that it’s easy to forget about the joy of creating something. When we first started making art, were we worried about how original our art was? Or were we just happy we made something? Comparison really is the thief of joy. I cannot stop comparing myself to artists I see online, so I actually try to limit the amount of art I see on socials. I commend you for wanting to try to live more! It really is a struggle to have a less online life. I think this is something I could have touched on more in the video, so I’m glad we’re talking about it! I think technology is actually one of our greatest allies in living “less online”. Especially with all of the free resources on the internet. I think we should try to stay as connected with our friends as we can - never give that up! But also, as you said, the world is at our fingertips - we just have to look for it. I think rather than saying that I wanted to take a step back from ‘technology’, what I really should have said is that I’m taking a step back from algorithm-driven content. I will still check in on social media to see what’s going on, but I’ve stopped idle scrolling and I limit the amount of time I am online. These are amazing questions! I will be honest; I am heavily influenced by the media I consume. I do a lot of fan art, so media is actually my number one inspiration for a lot of my pieces. People verbally passed down folklore before there were writing systems to record the stories being told. Many of these stories served to tech people lessons and morals. Even today - kid’s stories are made to teach them everyday lessons and morals they’ll need in the world. I think the media we consume and our lived experience is pretty intertwined. The media we consume influences our lived experience, and our lived experience influences what media we choose to consume. I honestly haven’t been too worried about limiting the how much media I consume (other than social media), but instead I try to focus on taking in different kinds of media. I have an online library card that allows me to check out books, magazines, and even documentaries, so that helps me make sure I am taking in a variety of thoughtful media. I do try to prioritize anything that makes me really happy (life is short) and things that can teach me something new. For your final question - that’s a tricky one. This is something I am struggling with right now, so I might not give the greatest answer. I think a lot of it comes down to experience as an artist and being comfortable with our art. Each piece of art we make is like a puzzle made up of pieces from other puzzles. Every line we make on the canvas is influenced by lessons we’ve been taught, media that inspired is, and our lived experience - whether we are consciously or unconsciously making the decision to draw from those sources. I think the most important thing it to not limit yourself. If there is something that inspires you, I encourage you to follow that inspiration wherever it leads. Don’t worry about abandoning practice because art is exploration! And sometimes exploration means abandonment (or temporary vacancy). You are so young, and you have an entire lifetime of artistic expression ahead of you. Your art will naturally grow an evolve with you - it’s most important to find out how to be comfortable with your expression. Thank you so much for this comment! I’m sorry for writing you a book! Please let me know if there’s anything I left out! I hope everything is going well for you, too <3
