2001 Mazda 121 Metro shades. Vehicle cutting in and out at high speeds. Runs ok on idle but when driven at various speeds the engine tries to cut out until you take your foot off the accelerator. Either there is not enough fuel in the engine or not enough air? First I changed the fuel filter which was not too bad. The fuel seemed to flow ok when disconnected but unable to tell when connected as...

You went to all that trouble. And didn't have the sense to take it out of the hole . And You could of purchased a small slab and placed over opening with a few bricks for extra support if need be. But in saying, your limited in experience to tool usage to repairs. Great that you made the effort to give it a go. And your outcome succeeded. You got it working by elimination of replacing parts. At least there new know. But all said limited experience and playing with gas connections may seem easy. But a mistake can occur due to inexperience. Tape does not always work for total sealing on gas if unexperianced to things. May require a thread sealant for certainty. Dont play with gas as you seem inexperienced to proper repairs. As I said you gave it a good go and operating. If water leaks its water no harm it is seen. If a gas leakage occurs it can't be evident like a water leakage and can cause a dangerous outcome. Its great you showed people your attempt . But be careful as inexperience can cost serious dangers to you and others.

This is literally a 20-30min job for a plumber, you don't need to drain the tank, the reason it wouldn't drain when u cut the hot outlet pipe is because you hadn't de pressured the cylinder, simply open a hot tap in side or pull the PTR valve to drain it, even tho you don't need to change that valve, maybe ask a plumber mate next time and save you 9hrs of trouble 😆

Update on my Aquamax 390 read my previous post. After this hack it worked for two months then gradually died. Worked for about 20 years had a plumber come out replaced all major components and now it works like new, plumber said we should get another 15 to 20 years all for $600 AUD instead of $1700.

To drain water unit you open the expansion control valve so that air can flow into the tank and allow the water to flow out of the hot water outlet.

Making that tool is not necessary. If you go to Bunnings and buy a Kinetic brand 15mm x 150mm galvanised pipe (threaded) from the plumbing section (About $6 AUD), you can screw it into the gas inlet on the left, after removing the copper pipe and brass fitting. In order to feed it in I went through opening that the copper gas pipe goes in to from outside the unit. I could do this by disconnecting and taking out the pipe above the gas stop cock. I used slight down pressure on the gal pipe with my foot which unstuck it and allowed me to turn it 180 degrees. I unscrewed the gal pipe and was then able to continue turning the gas controller until it came out (I used adjustable grips to assist with turning it, gripping on the small rectangular block of the gas inlet). I had the new gas controller with plumbers tape ready to go and for whatever reason I was able to put the new one in with minimal water coming out of the tank. I had already taken out the gas burner by undoing the thermocouple (small pipe on the left), then the small pipe on the opposite side and then the large one in the middle last before removing the whole burner by taking out the one small screw at the bottom holding it in. After those pipes were disconnected I only had to pull out the connection on the piezo igniter to get it all out. Obviously use soapy water to test your gas connections for leaks. I used yellow gas plumbers tape on the threads. The whole process took about 40 minutes. The mistake I did make however was removing the plastic from around the copper sensors at the back of the new controller. The old factory one I took out still had the plastic attached. Hope this helps. Good video.
