How to Identify & Name Freestyle Footbag Tricks
PassBack's long and detailed lesson on how to identify and name freestyle footbag tricks. Learn a primer on the language of freestyle footbag and be ready to jump right into discussing this complex sport.

Trick Dictionary - www.passbackfootbag.com/tricks
Glossary - www.passbackfootbag.com/glossary
Footnotes:
1. You'll be fine with just the info in the video itself, but the following footnotes add some important-but-not-essential details, context, exceptions, etc.
2. In standard freestyle, kicks are mostly used as a warmup, and then tricks typically use only stalls.
3. Symposium can apply to other components (like a symposium kick done in a single-leg jump), but it's most commonly used with dexes. There's also a halfway between "normal" and "symposium": "symple," which is like half-symposium: a dex starts with a single-leg jump, but midway through, the other leg returns to the ground. Symposium & symple both shorten to "symp" and can almost always be inferred from the specific trick: symp mirage = symposium mirage, symp legover = symple legover.
4. Every other spin in this video is a "back"spin, which turns away from the bag, and is the assumed direction of a spin. This one is an "in"spin which turns towards the bag. Inspinning isn't very common and 95% of the time you see a spin it will be a backspin.
5. "[set]" means it doesn’t matter where the bag came from, it’s just in the air. For example, toe-ss toe and clipper-op toe are both the same trick of "toe stall," just set from different surfaces/sides.
6. The shorthand "rev" or "reverse" can be used to flip the dex of a trick in the reverse direction; Orbit could be named "Rev ATW."
7. Legover also the name of "Switch" from an attempt at an alternate naming system. Most players use “Legover,” but it’s good to know both.
8. Butterfly has the alt name of "Down" from the same alternate naming system.
9. "Double" ("triple," "quad," etc) is usually used to mean "the same trick fragment another time," ("double ATW," "double spin," etc) but there's one main exception. The trick "DOUBLE legover" is a nickname for "miraging op legover" (more commonly said as "DLO"), NOT a legover with two dexes. A "double-dex legover" is called a "double switchover" ("DSO" for short). This is due to historical reasons and the way trick names developed, but as far as I can remember this is the only weird case like this.

Dude has the eyes of a Disney princess
Noice
Satisfying to watch
Still jamming with the Toms, they do look sick to be fair
I know, I'm so overdue to try something new :S gotta buckle down and pick something from the list soon
Great complex trick to learn in steps!
Well done Sir
OOO love this combo, very satisfying lol
Smooth
Nice one ✨
That’s crazy
Thanks 😎
This man knows what he's talking about.
Fantastic breakdown. Thank you for these, very motivating!
You guys do a great job breaking it down and making it look doable. Always gives me motivation to try something new
Footbag.....when did thwy gentrify hackeysacks
I can't even walk in a straight line let alone twist like this 😫
Cool summary!
I'm glad there are still footbag players out there. I got into it back with the WFA was still in Golden, CO (where I lived)! I've lost a lot of my skill, but really want to get back into it, and I'm glad there is at least one good resource to go to (this chanel). I dug out my Rod Lavers and the freakin soles split!
I wish they made these in my size... Stupid gigantic feet...
jfc
This reminds me of how some skateboard tricks get named. For example, the street skate trick that won the 2024 Olympics was the bs nollie 270 to nose bluntslide.
Yep, very similar, just a straight combination of components. We also use shorthand nicknames which can break down into technical names (which I talk about in the full video), and I think skateboarding has some of that as well? Like could a laser flip be named in a more technical way?
That’s some crazy foot flexibility. I tried stalling it on the inside of my foot a few times and it is TOUGH. Good work
Thanks! You could get it with practice :) Feel free to send me a video to critique and I can help you get there.
All I see is your bag slapping around in your shorts
Thanks for noticing!
Pretty sure it’s called hacky sack…
Sorry dude I had to 😂❤
Lol this video is good
This was Hacky sack in the 90s
People have played hacky sack AND freestyle footbag since the 80s, hacky sack has just always been the more well known game: ua-cam.com/video/jEmrt-GfseU/v-deo.html
When did Hacky-Sacks start getting called "Footbags" lol....wtf
Technically always, but they're just different games under the same umbrella: hacky sack is the circle kicking game and freestyle footbag is what you see here.
Cual seria el mas facil de crear y usar ? que relleno deberia llevar sin que cueste tanto dineral hacerlo ?
Una pregunta, que es lo que lleva adentro esa pelota
Hey Matt, thank you for all the hard work it really helps! I've been using the SB Adversary for 2 years and they have been pretty good outside of the narrow toe box which was a bit of a problem for me at the start. My question is do I get another pair of these or can you recommend me something else that's similar with a wider toe box? Thank you again!
Ok after like 15 years I’m going to attempt to start kicking again. Do you have suggestions of current day shoes that are in stock? My Rod Lavers are long since trashed and gone. Anything come to mind?
Sure do! www.passbackfootbag.com/shoes has current availability and stats, video, etc. You might want to jump right to Quantums, but I like the TOMS for a lower-cost option.
@@PassBack what a great resource to have. Thank you!!!
Thank you for doing this Matt! One day you will hear a footbagger say "I got in the footbag because of this video it was such a good resource." I just wish my greasy fingers were involved somehow😅
This video is so good! So easy to understand. And the dictionary is a great resource. Thank you for your dedication over those 6 months that it took to get this video out.
Awesome job Matt this is great
Someday everything is gonna sound like a rhaspody, when Matt paaaaaaints his masterpiece ❤
matt - hats down. a great video. love it.
This is absolutely epic! Might become one of the biggest contributions in the history of the sport, potentially as important as tricks of the trade. Where's the donate button! Thank you so much, keep up the good work! Everybody share this video so he can get more likes and comments, and because so many people need to see it!
Thanks, Happy, that's so nice! I certainly hope so :) I won't say that I'll never take any kind of money for this channel (Patreon, merch, donations, whatever) but for now I'm happy doing this as a passion project for the sport <3
Incredible work, thank you
Super nice, makes me realize how many things I thought i understood well but were actually kinda vague. This is now crystal clear!
Glad to hear! I think almost everything in the sport is really well-defined and simple on its own, but when you put 50 of those things together it gets 😵
Thanks so much for putting this video together Matt! Super appreciate you.
Awesome Vid, I remember watching Tricks of the Trade over and over again on dvd😳
Kenny Shults!! I got to play with him once at a local tourney, and it was crazier in person. I had the VHS of TotT1 and wore that thing out.
Phenomenal video 🙌 this is a must watch. Passback is back!
I'm forcing myself to choose a simple topic for the next video so it doesn't take me another 6 months.
I wish I had this 20 years ago. Great work
I think I subconsciously made the video that my younger self would've wanted when he first started. I honestly don't remember how I learned most of this; probably just picked up everything over time by reading strings on modified, but I don't remember there being much formal explanations.
@@PassBack yeah, I was thinking about that when I was watching this. It definitely took a few years before I understood the lingo. Probably different Internet sources and the tricks of the trade videos but also in person with more experienced players.
I would add: open, shut, swipes, and cloud tricks like the cloud hopper
For the dictionary? I don't know "swipes" or "cloud hopper" but I'll add the others (and I realize I'm missing things like Dragon and Flapper that I'll add too).
@@PassBack A swipe is clipping the foorbag with the inside or outside of your shoe really fast to make the hack spin upwards. I see it with people that spin without stopping. Idk, it's what I've always heard it called.
@@sjfsr these are neat references but the language that he is using in the video is agreed upon by thousands of people competing around the world and I think that most of us don't know the words you're using to describe things. You could make a video of them to show us and maybe we have other names we would tell you or maybe we don't and that's exciting. But in general, hacky sack has lots of little regional naming conventions used in different places in the world but a more standard agreed upon naming system used globally. In this video there have been some bold moves too push and standardize some simplifications of some of the language and it's interesting and applaudible and I think it will stick (atwing for instance), but there's lots of other interesting stuff that has regional names or some stuff even that doesn't even have good names yet. Show us your moves! Cloud in our language often talks about calf muscle contacts, and some people do some little calf hits, maybe that's one thing you're talking about. Definitely a more rare element and there are many that he left out for simplicity. Pardon me jumping into reply, just wanted to speak from the community in a way that encourages you to show us and understand where he's coming from in the video :-)
Thank you! 🙌🙌🙌
Great breakdown. So many good points.
“He is a loathsome, offensive brute, yet I can’t look away.” - Love the Kramer painting
I see a parasite
🤌🤌🤌
Sick
Foot bagging should be an Olympic sport.
In terms of athleticism and skill, I think it would fit right in! But footbag needs to get waaaay more popular to meet the Olympic requirements for a new sport.
This is crazy, How can this gem have only 10k views?
because I didn't do it with a banana
Been trying to get these on my nd foot. Tough
