Wellspring is a piece specially commissioned for this concert series. This song was composed by Kailin Yong and Chen Indra. “源” stands for “源远流长” which tells the story of river, drawing from its source and spreading far and wide. Using this analogy of a river, Wellspring tells of the story of a student learning from her teacher (the source) and eventually developing the confidence to become independent, yet never forgetting her roots.
The song starts off exploring this theme of the river. It then leads on to the theme of a nurturing apprenticeship between student and teacher. With the teacher’s encouragement, the student eventually develops the confidence to explore new cultures such as experimenting with the traditional Malay rhythm “joget”. The ending of the song describes the student’s deep desire to pass on the legacy she received from her teacher and explore new frontiers in guzheng music. Despite her newfound independence, the student remains deeply grateful to her teacher, never forgetting her roots.
