Although she fell hard on her first jump, the triple loop, she completed a very strong free program with a huge triple flip , 2 triple toe loops and 2 triple salchows.

Ah…this feeling on the first 3 flip, when you go so high on a jump, & dont expect it to be so b it! It was quite enormous, it’s very choreographed & nice program, i love the transition from the combo spin to the last minute. Pity she struggled so much with the jumps all of her career, she’s so talented

Shame about the crash on the combo, she would've been better off crashing on the triple loop which was planned. On the other hand she might've done the best double axel in the entire competition.

Agreed :) She skated to the exact same music to her program as Tiffany Chin did in the 80s which added charm for me. Also really underscored, she landed a bunch of triples including 3Lz!
Still one of my faves. The speed is incredible. When it worked, it REALLY worked. She even has a few moments in this admittedly not great performance.

She was the second on ice that evening so the judges did not rush with high marks. 4.9 by the US judge was probably a revenge for the American lost golds in 1984 and 1988.
She was the fourth skater of that evening.
1) Rossalyn and Debi did not lose gold, they both made multiple mistakes so they did not deserve the win 2) I completely agree, she was hammered down so much, it's not even funny. The presentation was superior than any other skater in these Olympics, I would've given her at least 5.8s for that category, and around a 5.3 for technical merit. 4.9 would've been for people who missed a required element or had more than one fall, which she did none of those

I remember when she was performing we, the kids, would run home to watch her. I am from Croatia and remember her first gold in Sarajevo! Nice memories. Always great to see her performing, talking. Simply - the Diva!
I felt like she was hammered down too much on presentation. They only thing that was missing from this program was the difficult lutzes and flips. I would've given her at least 5.8s for artistic impression
Another factor is she skated REALLY early. Like two hours before any of the main contenders. That also affected her scores, in addition to only a triple toe combo. Gordeeva & Grinkov also skated early, but not nearly this early (plus they were the clear and far away favorites so it didn't matter).

Double axel and a double jump after steps were required in the women's short program in those times.
She could only do one triple given the rules and required elements, the other jumps were required to be doubles.
A very elegant dress. Gee she was fast too, those backward cross overs. I love her choice of music too. It's a tango from Cirque Du Soleil.
She was fast to a fault. I remember watching her at worlds in 1998 live and she was legit flying past the other girls to the point of it being scary.

Four times - 92, 94, 98 and 02. And let's be fair; she didn't fall in 98 long at all, she just popped everything instead.

Katarina really grew as an artist. her line compared to when she started is incredible. everything she does is perfectly timed to the music. She skates WITH the music and not over it. I love this program, a Sandra Bezic classic.

Where did this good quality commentary-free video come from? Was always a fan of Ms. Leray. Really unfortunate that she seemed to get derailed by injuries just as she was starting to put it together.

That the differences. EXPERIENCE! That made someone calm and have a grace when they perform on ice. A young aggresive athelete who perform like a mad girl didn't deserve a gold. But, life sometime never kind to you.
Summer Scent totally. Just the years of your life can make you that much more beautiful of a dancer. And skating isn’t the only industry I feel this way about. Look at the fashion and modeling world. Back in the day vs had women who gorgeously parades down the runway with unmatched confidence and now we have preteens with tiny little bodies dominating these brands

The movement of hands is same for this skater from program to program even if you look her next years, choreography doesn't change. After few moments and excellent jumps it gets boring to see her balance herself with floating hands...same moves over and over again....she has great potential if she had better choreographer...but Italy in spiritual depth a bit behind Russia, regardless of Renaissance phenomena...when you come to Italy you feel Michelangelo was born there by eccident
