Ashton-under-Lyne Past
Приєднався 6 лют 2023
As an ex-pat Ashtonian, I was always interested in my home town as a kid growing up there in the 1950's & 1960's, and the interest is still there.
I recently acquired 3 and a half hours worth of Standard 8mm Cinefilm & old photographs taken around the Ashton area by my father (between the 1950's & 1970's), which I had digitised. The results of which I want to share with viewers to this channel.
There are 8 separate videos in the Cinefilm collection, ( Part 1 to Part 8) and 1 separate video of old photographs also showing scenes around the Ashton area.
Sit back and enjoy a look at the yesteryears. Keep a keen eye out and see if you can spot any of your friends in the videos.
Don't forget to hit the like button and subscribe to my channel. If you feel like it, add a comment. Much appreciated.
Thank you Ashtonians.

I'm just a few days short of my 78th birthday now living in Australia for the past 59 years, this certainly evokes fond memories of my time in Ashton
Thank you so much for sharing these memories.
At 2 minutes 14 seconds is that Whiteacre Road?
Did i see stamford park and botanical gardens then?
This country has sadly gone to the dogs now. Great upload.
Amazing scenes. Please post more! Thank you for these.
Great memories, I’d have been Two years old.
What year is it?
A lovely reminder of my time living in Ashton and being at the Salvation army In the brownies and guides in the 1950's and 60's I am 74yrs old but still remember it as if it was yesterday. It's a shame that churches have been depleted over the years. Thank you for posting.
Manchester regiment as escort
I wish it was still like that
Collyhurst past whit walks 1960 1970s
Haha I’ve just found my mother in law pushing the wife in a pram in 1967. St. James Church. Cowhill Lane
In the days of Ashton being a proud community. How nice to see this being a 50s kid. Tameside was definitely a downfall for the lovely local areas. How the memories came back, people were really coming out to see the scholars walk and running out to give them money.
Great to see images of St James' Junior and Primary schools. Spotted Mr Ken Lee's green Austin A40 parked outside the railings, as usual in those days!
I spent many, many summers in Stamford Park, great memories
Oh wow, footage from Woodhead, that's just sensational 👍👍
Wow, what brilliant footage 👏
That looks like St James' Primary School near the start. And some brilliant footage of Heyrod chimneys being demolished; mad to think that what's left of that overhead gantry thing on the right of the screen is actually still there too. Thanks for the upload 👍👍
I lived there 17 years. Happiest time of my life. God bless, I’m 54, now and I remember it this way. X
Think I’ll have to return to my roots
Fantastic
The good old days
Living next door Alice well played .
Nearly 60 years ago in Ashton. I thought it was The Black School on Queen's Road at first (my old school) but then realised it must be St James on Romney St. Notice how the buildings had turned black from all the smoke in the air - people's lungs must have been similar, no wonder so much illness! Very nostalgic and what must have been an extensive (and expensive) library of 8mm cine. Would love to have a running list of locations etc if that had been possible. 6:40 corner of Melbourne St Sth and Lennox Street, house and cobbles are still there on Google Maps. www.google.com/maps/@53.4918759,-2.0906381,3a,75y,30.8h,84.96t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1syoeXagebBpasS7IrpRiJAw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu
Excellent ,how Gorton and Openshaw once was 😊
Tulip Sunday in Stamford park! Magnificent.
Early 50's I'd say, perhaps 53? Fair tugged at my heart strings, Gorton & Openshaw was my local station, and I was to see lots of it when I started on the railway!
Congratulations to whoever has put this amazing film footage together - a valuable record of what was once a ibrant town before it became deindustrialised and subsumed into the administrative convenience which was 'Tameside' The recording of the Mayor making of Councillor Percy Travis from the ?mid/late 60s is particularly poignant. I knew Percy in his later years. He became the first Leader of Tameside Council and subsequently Mayor of Tameside. He worked at Platt's in Oldham as an engineer. A man of integrity who represented and safeguarded eminently the interests of local people and the Labour Party for many years. Jack Reece.
I was givin the footage by the owner and I pieced everything and this channel together for him! I believe his father captured all the footage you have seen! I’m glad you are enjoying it!
This is fantastic! Does anybody know what year it's from?
This video was taken around 1957 by my father who was a signalman at Gorton Station Signalbox. He went from there to Dewsnap Sidings in early 1960's until early 1980's and then to Stalybridge until his retirement in early 1990's.

Thank you.
Thank you very much.
Brilliant pieces of history..........................
A lake and a park created by a ridiculously wealthy baron....ensuring his name will last forever....😢😢😢
Actually, the working people of Ashton, Stalybridge and Dukinfield bought the Highfield Estate, the Earl of Stamford granted land adjacent to the estate, and a public park was created, owned by the people, it was later turned over to a joint committee of Ashton and Stalybridge councillors and they ran it very well until Tameside took over and ran it to the ground.
Stamford... Everywhere around Ashton. 👍👍
@@AAUK2 aNd your point is?
What a beautiful video. I wish I could step back in time. Love the music too.
