Book Haul from a West Coast Book Store Road Trip
Reading (and enjoying) Ubik now :) My first PKD's book but not the last! :))
I've been following your tabletop game channel for ages but never knew about this one!! As an avid reader who also relishes in fantasy, I'm beyond excited to go through all these and find new gems! I always trust your taste!
Awesome, thank you!
Campbell really is the best writer in the Lovecraftian tradition. Not getting along with him means not getting along with great writing. He really has elevated pulp beyond pulp.
No it doesn't. I love great and well written prose - Dunsany, Ligotti, Cisco, etc. (all better writers than Campbell can ever dream of being). Get out of here with that crap. I just don't like Campbell. I also don't care about elevating pulp. Pulp is brilliant. It doesn't need to be elevated. Yuk!
Oh no got the seedbears trilogy on a whim too, haven’t gotten to it yet! And yeah the worm of Urakhu is absolutely awesome, love Tierney and audibly gasped when you showed that Yog-sothoth cycle volume didn’t even know it existed! The repairer of reputations is one of my all time favourite short stories as well, it’s sooooo weird! I love that somehow the ambiguity is maintained throughout! And as other people have said now I have to, ehem, go buy some books…
The two Tierney novels in the Yog-Sothoth cycle are A-tier. Just amazing. Over the last year he has become one of my favorites.
Classic pulpy horror and sword & sorcery just hits different. Awesome collection.
A big thing for me is that they tend to be shorter, quicker reads, not so concerned with world building, and they aren't usually one long continuing series you have to read in order.
That copy is in incredible shape, appreciate this overview!
Yeah, I am very happy with the condition of this one. Paid a pretty penny for it, that's for sure.
A few of the books you showed are print on demand, not just the ones with the non descript covers.
Nice!
I, too, never considered reading Star Trek books until, on a whim, I picked a couple up at my local used book store. Avatar 1 and 2 are the first two books in the DS9 "relaunch" series. The relaunch line picks up the story directly after Season 7 with the idea of being Season 8. I can't get over how fun it is to have all my favorite characters, and a few new ones, back in action. Quark has a romance, and it's amazing :D
That’s awesome. I love Quark, Rom and Nog. Nog is probably my favorite character in the entire ensemble.
Just found your channel. Great stuff! I also just picked up an older version of that Etidorhpa book. I didn't know what to make of that either.
Seems like such a wild book!
The Arthur Barnes collection has a story co written with Henry Kuttner. An ok collection, with the story taking place on the comet (the Kuttner story) being the best. I tracked down a copy of 'We Are All Legends' as soon as you described it 👍
WOW - so many cool books! My cart is filled to overflowing.
Howard Jones has terminal brain cancer. Pray for him.
Oh man....that sucks. :(
Just got the first 6 of Sword-Dancer saga, almost finished it. I've really enjoyed it. Getting the 7th is pretty expensive. But the 8th seems easy.
Didn't even know it was a series!
Glad to see you back. That Frazetta cover might be one of his collaborations with Roy G Krenkel. The Marcel Schwob book is from 1892, only the Wakefield edition is new, Snuggly Books has translated some of his other works. That Adrian Cole trilogy is coming out in an omnibus in January, maybe revised (?), he has revised quite a bunch of his early work, I've been eager to read his Voidal series for a long time.
Thanks for the additional info!
I picked up Star Axe and Power of the Serpent a few years ago. Star Axe had a lot of promise out of the gate (nice world map) but devolves to the party trudging around in misery interminably until the book just ends. Not inspired to get anything else by the author. I didn't LOVE Power of the Serpent but I'd like to read the others, some interesting good/evil druid magic in there. It does get pretty grimy as you said.
Great as always! Carmen Maria Machado, who wrote the intro and did the notes for the version of "Carmilla" that you have is an amazing writer as well. Check out her collection "Her Body and Other Parties".
I have “Her Body…” :). Read a couple of stories out of it and really liked them.
I got lucky this past month! I found copies of Tanith Lee’s Birthgrave, Jean Lorrah’s Savage Empire, the last book in the Fafhrd & Grey Mouser series (Knight & Knave), and the first two Horeseclans books by Robert Adams; all in good condition for low prices! Also, Happy Holidays, man! I can’t wait to see what books you recommend next!
Oh wow! Sounds like you scored some great books! I’ve been wanting to revisit the Horseclan series.
If you like a bit of warhammer and haven't read Drachenfles by Kim Newman writing as Jack Yeovil I'd really recommend it, great fantasy horror book.
Thanks!
Peter David also wrote Babylon 5 novels. They are very good stories. I have one novel signed by him 👍
He’s a very kind of workman like author. Gets the job done kind of guy.
I bought We Are All Legends after you recommended it in a previous video. It is awesome. Thank you, Daniel.
It is so good!
Great to see such a celebration of print. & I’m remembering an old Gryphon Books bookmark I once had… Happy New Year!
Happy new year to you as well. :) thanks for stopping by. We should chat more in 2025.
Everytime you release a new book video I end up spending way too much time on ebay trying to find some of them 😂
Ha. Welcome to my life! ;)
I have an entire bookshelf behind me because of exactly this haha.
You should read the webcomics Order of the Stick, and Goblins, both set in fantasy rpg worlds. I think I've been reading both for nearly or maybe over two decades. Somewhat goofy most of the time, but they get really intense and Order of the Stick has amazing payoffs for storylines and sometimes tragic ends for characters. Goblins is about a group of young goblins that are tired of seeing their friends and family killed as easy xp and decide the best way to protect their people is to cross the player character line and take up character classes. The evolution of the art and storytelling over the years has been amazing to watch, and I have many print volumes of Order of the Stick. All the additional material is fun and worth it to me, but 99% of it is online for free. ediT: I recently bought two books that will be arriving next week that seemed really good. The Starry Wisdom Library An auction company has acquired some of the most infamous books in fiction, the Necronomicon, the play from the King in Yellow, some others. The Dagon Collection The same company that auctioned the books from The Starry Wisdom Library is back again and auctioning dangerous items scraped and stolen from governments, tombs, and private collections across sci fi and horror.
Yes! I recommended both of these on my board game channel. :) The Starry Wisdom Library An auction company has acquired some of the most infamous books in fiction, the Necronomicon, the play from the King in Yellow, some others. The Dagon Collection The same company that auctioned the books from The Starry Wisdom Library is back again and auctioning dangerous items scraped and stolen from governments, tombs, and private collections across sci fi and horror.
The covers on those David Gemmell novels are fantastic! I'm a sucker for a good fantasy novel cover. Good stuff. Thanks for sharing.
I know! The covers are what drew me in.
@@allfictionisfantasyI believe Against the Horde was the original title for Legend. That is a great story. Don’t wait too long. Druss kicks arse!
So glad you let me know about “We are all Legends” what a great book. Such a wicked, doomed vibe. WTF was that story about the hands and fingers? So wild. These books you highlight are some deep cuts for me. Thanks for sharing! If you want to check out some Warhammer Fantasy type role playing books, check out Kriegmesser and Warlock! if you’ve not already. Kreigsmesser is particularly clever with a wicked twist on the Law vrs Chaos plot.
By Divers Hands has got to be one of the all time great fantasy stories.
Thanks for the shout-out. What a great book-hoard!
Are you John F? I can't see your user name. :)
Having been unable to finish the 2nd TCrow novel (it was awful), I can only imagine how bad the series had become in this second trilogy! Lovecraft is probably spinning in his grave.
I like Lumley more than Lovecraft.
Your taste seems extremely heavy metal! 🤘🎸As for me, I’m into original series Star Trek novels. I asked my girlfriend for Star Trek 1-12 for Christmas, here’s hoping! They’re laid-back, mediocre reading.
Total comfort reads.
Looks like a lot of good reading on the horizon. I love Conan and will have to check out some of those Alien titles also. Have fun and see you in the next one.
The Burrowers Beneath was my introduction to Brian Lumley. Your video has inspired me to pull some of his books out of my collection, and added the Khash books to my shopping list. 😅
Nice! Love Lumley so much.
love your videos!
Thanks. :)
My first Koontz as well, coming from a lifetime of King. This book has all of the tense elements you're looking for from King with an overall... lighter... type of storytelling. If you've read "everything" Stephen King, this book is an easy next step that you'll love.
Nice!
Love the videos, often adding some of these to my To Read pile, which is quickly becoming a To Read Room!!
Hahaha. Yes. I have a to read house! :)
One of my top three favourite books of all time. Read it every year... in October. ❤
It's very good. Loved it. So glad I finally read it.
I wonder how the sells are doing for this book now? Because I immediately went to Amazon after this review to get a copy. Amazing suggestion! This is my type of fantasy. It’s so weird and hilarious. RIP Sir Hough. I hope you’re doing plenty of wenching in heaven you greedy bastard.😂
Sir Hough was great! I was told by a friend of the author that the author has said he saw a spike in sales from my video and from posting about it on my Dungeon Dive social media.
Completely agree that Zelazny is very hit or miss. I'll have to give this one a try once the 'to read' pile has gone down a bit. Absolutely loved We Are All Legends by the way! Recently picked up the PS Publishing Darrell Schweitzer volumes as well! 😃 Though, I'm currently in a Robert Silverberg deep dive. 📚
What Silverberg are you reading?
@@allfictionisfantasy Currently reading 'The Book of Skulls'. Loved 'Downward Unto Earth' and 'Hawksbill Station'. He also did a lot of really fun horror short stories! ('Monsters and Things' is the collection I got). I also have 'Lord Valentine's Castle' and 'Nightwings' to get around to reading. 👍
Such a delightful (cozy?) novel, and so skillfully plotted and narrated.
Totally cozy.
bubo's not a name for a rat. it's a name for a golden mechanical owl!
Haha! Good call.
Morgan Freeman's production company bought the rights to Necrsocope a few years ago.
Boy in the Broken Bubble wasn't sf as far as I recall.
A few that I love that don’t tend to make top 5 lists are our friends from frolix 8, clans of the alphane moon, the penultimate truth, and I really like Martian time slip.
Damn, now I definitely have to check it out.
I've been meaning to read this one for a long time. Schweitzer's _The Mask of the Sorcerer_ is one of my all-time favorites, and _The Shattered Goddess_ is absolutely fascinating.
Nice! I've got both of those now. :)
Hey, for a while I was the only one who who review Kane by Karl E. Wagner. That changed over time of course. It does not matter who brought it out first just as long as it was brought up. If it happens to be you, so be it.
It’s crazy how with all of the book UA-camrs out there, there are still these books without reviews.
@@allfictionisfantasy Books take time to read, people have their own taste, plus some youtubers follow trends on what is out their and what people will watch, add that to what all have been published since Guttenberg and it's not surprising there will be some gaps in what we expect to be out there.
Just finished reading it and the last time my imagination went this wild when reading a book was with Dune In Watermelon Sugar is so good, going to be a recurent read for me I think too
Yeah. It’s pretty great.
I’m surprised by your reaction, I wouldn’t really even consider this in Darrell Schweitzer’s top five… my favourites are the shattered goddess, echoes of the goddess, the great world and the small (it has the 3 Etelven Thios stories, some of the first s&s I ever read! Really good collection), necromancies and netherworlds (I really didn’t expect this one to be as mesmerising as it was!), and his first novel, what’s it called, White isle something. The sekenre stories didn’t blow my mind but I def need to reread those, see if my mind has changed…
Nice! Well then I'm in for some good reads. I now own almost everything he's written that is available.
This was like reading a book ripped out of my own brain. A book tailor made for me because of the religious nature of the story. I will always gravitate towards SF&F with a strong religious and mythological foundation, especially one as well written as this.
Have you read books by Richard Lee Byers? He is the person who introduced me to Darrell Schweitzer's work and to Darrell himself. You might enjoy Richard's books too.
Looks like I've read around him in that I've explored the various D&D / Forgotten Realms / Pathfinder / Arkham Fiction he writes in. I have one thing from him on my to read shelf - a novella in the second Arkham Horror Novellas collection! That's coming up probably sometime next year. :)
I read this book many, many years ago and I loved it.
Nice! It's so good.
I don't know if it's been mentioned already, but Jovial Bob Stein is R.L. Stein of Goosebumps fame.
Yep!
Agreed, fantastic collection.
Have you read anything else from him?
@@allfictionisfantasy I read a collection called "The Mysteries of the Faceless King" a few years ago and enjoyed it.
