    Hi Gerald, Absolutely fantastic country, and great images in fine weather - perhaps your best video yet. I'm familiar with the area from a couple of overnight Blueberry hikes, plus my August 1994 "Mount Holmes to Mount Robson - 8 Days along the Spine of the Canadian Rockies" trek with one companion. I particularly enjoyed your day-2 hike north across the Jackpine River towards the Resthaven Icefield, as that was new for me. You make many references to the pass just west of Jackpine Mountain as Jackpine Pass, and this might confuse some folks planning a trip in or through the area. This might be an informally-used name for that spot, but the real Jackpine Pass is nine or ten kilometres farther east at the head of the Jackpine River where the BC/Alberta boundary crosses, and where you start the descent towards Bess Pass and into Jasper National Park's North Boundary Trail via Chown Creek. It's clearly marked as "JACKPINE PASS" on the official 1:50,000 topo maps and was part of the early twentieth century boundary survey. When we crossed it in 1994, there was the remains of a canvas cross anchored onto the ground by rocks on the pass that had presumably been used for later aerial photogrammetry mapping. On the occasion of our Holmes-Robson hike we camped two kilometres west of, and 150 metres above the official Jackpine Pass, beside a couple of idyllic lakes looking directly across towards the Chown Glacier, one of the two most powerful vistas that I have seen. The area is absolutely stunning and well worth visiting. Before it became part of the GDT it was also part of the National Hiking Trail, both adoptions being after our 1994 trek. I originally got the idea for the trek from looking at an old map in the visitor centre bookstore in Jasper showing historic horse trails over Bess and Jackpine Passes and down the Jackpine River. Our route was later picked up the the Ramblers for one of their weeklong trips, plus I also heard of a commercial guide later taking clients from Europe over the route. Anyone planning to do that trip today should check on JNP North Boundary Trail conditions, as there have been bridge washouts. Mike

      @@pgoutdoors I really loved the area myself and as you said the pass below Jackpine mountain is being informally called Jackpine pass these days. I was aware of the washout of Twintree bridge on the NBT and people are now swimming it at the lake to use the trail. I lookout forward to chatting about the National Hiking Trail as parts of it we find very intriguing and hope to explore some. Glad you liked the video it definitely is a beautiful area all be it a big challenge for those who are used to local day hikes. I want to return and hike the Perseverance route at some point and drop out at Pauline and work my way to Cushing creek. So many thoughts just need time to do everything.😊

    Wow, you guys have certainly been getting out there! An exciting end to your seven summits tour. Impressive that you got up there in 30C temps. Way to go, calling in those fires. After previously hiking Erg every year for over 30 years, my last hike there was nearly a decade ago with one other person, my neighbour. We ended that hike with an early lunch on the high point of Mary Harper Ridge, not because of weather, but rather because of two mountain goats that we watched disturb, and then get into a stand-off with a large grizzly that had been hidden in a slight hollow halfway up the final summit climb. It was a fantastic wildlife sighting, but we counted ourselves fortunate that that goats had flushed out the bear as otherwise we would likely have stumbled on it at close range. It's amazing how grizzlies can disappear into the smallest features of apparently open terrain where you'd be sure there weren't any. Anyway, after enjoying the spectacle from a reasonably safe distance on the ridge as we ate lunch, and because the bear was still on the summit slope, we decided that this amazing sighting was our 'summit' for the day and turned around. A note to anyone contemplating hiking Erg Mountain: Over the years, I reckon I have sighted or actually encountered grizzly bears on Erg in about 1 in 3 trips (more like 1 in 2 trips, or a 50 per cent chance if alone or with just one or two other people). So, there's a very high probability of running into grizzlies there. Two of my encounter/sightings were with a male/female pair, including the very rare sighting on the second occasion of seeing them actually mating. Two of my grizzly encounters on Erg were very tense and we were fortunate to not have trouble. I'd therefore recommend being extremely cautious about letting a dog run free there. Even if the dog is under full voice control and does not chase after wildlife, the mere sight of a dog (read wolf) can agitate a grizzly and might be the difference between a retreat and a defensive attack. Looking at your pictures of the jungle that the approach has become, it's hard to believe today that 40+ years ago we used to drive ordinary cars right to the Ptarmigan/Erg fork and begin the very steep section right from the vehicles. When Ptarmigan Creek was bridged (originally by the gravel pit access road, and later by the Forest Service installed hiker bridge - both long since washed out by spring floods) one of my favourite annual traditions was a solo hike/ski trip on Erg Mtn on the Victoria Day weekend. By that date, the south easterly-facing trail was clear of snow all the way to the subalpine, where I would don skis and ski to the ridgetop, then park the skis and hike to the top on the wind-swept ridge and summit slope. A highly recommended jaunt when the creek is once again bridged. Mike

      @@pgoutdoors You’ve definitely had some amazing experiences Mike. I look forward to having coffee with you in the near future and listen to your stories. Mark and I just got home at 5:00 am from our last multi day and we have quite a story to tell. As for Grizzlies I like you consider myself fortunate but wary when I get to see a Grizzly. They are a formidable opponent but usually very wary of humans. I’ve hunted most of the mountains in northern BC so have seen a lot of Grizzlies over the years. When I read your story on George I as well had hunted many of the mountains he had.

    Fitzwilliam sure has changed since I was last there with all the new tent platforms. Great views of the basin, especially early and late in the day. On your day-2 trek over to the westernmost part, below the main peak, did you see any of the hitherto resident mountain goat population; or at least goat wool left on the bushes? This small herd always used to be there and was never hard to spot, certainly on every Fitzwilliam trip that I've done. The goats were one of the reasons why BC Parks later relocated the camping area over to the large lake on the other side so as not to disturb them. On our early trips to the area some 35 years ago and soon after the present trail was built, we used to camp by the idyllic creek on the goat side of the amphitheatre. There were no campsite facilities at either location in those days. The first section of trail from the highway to Rockingham Creek was built by the same contractor who built all the trails is Eskers Park. He was given discretion on precise location etc., and consequently did a great job in both parks. There were reports of a fair amount of grizzly activity on the Fitzwilliam trail last year - did you see any sign on this trip? Mike

    • @TrekkingwithTaz
      @TrekkingwithTaz 3 дні тому

      @@pgoutdoors there was lots of goat droppings throughout the whole basin but I didn’t see any goats. It was very hot and very exposed to the sun while I was over there so they may have been in a shady draw somewhere. I like the idea of camping by that creek and was thinking if I returned and it was busy that I would camp over there but only if necessary to find a camp spot. I saw one Grizzly track back near the big and no scat so I don’t think one is working the area right now. Not a ton of groceries up higher for it at this time.

    That looks more like it! A spectacular place, and the lake below the summit is great for a dip on a hot summer day. That summit is the highest point in the informally-named McGregor Range.

      @@pgoutdoors first time up Torpy although it’s been on my list for quite sometime. In my opinion, and I know there are people who will disagree, this mountain has more to look at than Evanoff park. I do understand Fang cave is the highlight of Evanoff but I see me camping on Torpy. I’d love to see the road plowed and doing a winter camping trip on Torpy.😊

    • @pgoutdoors
      @pgoutdoors 3 дні тому

      @@TrekkingwithTaz I wouldn't agree or disagree in comparing the Fang Basin to Torpy; they both have their attractions. Certainly the Torpy side, stretching from Fang Mtn to Torpy Mtn, is more extensive. Together, however, they are one of the best alpine areas near to Prince George. All the overnight trips that I have done to Torpy Mtn were from a camp in the meadows just east of, and below Fang. It's quick access via the Torpy Trail that George Evanoff built and affords a nice, long but relaxed day hike over to Torpy Mtn on day-two. There is lots of time to pack up the camp and hike out after returning to the base camp in the afternoon. That way, you can also hike over into the Fang basin on the afternoon of the first day after setting up camp, or have the option on a three-day, two-night trip to fully explore the entire area. I've also been directly up to Torpy Mtn on day trips on foot and on skis using more of less the route you used on this trip. I've never camped by Torpy Mtn, but the lake looks attractive for that.

      I have done all of those as I’m an old timer from PG! lol. I moved here in 1965 and Forests for the World was my backyard and we called the area Ginters Lakes because Ben Gunter owned the property below and we used a trail past his house to access them. I do plan on documenting those trails as well so others that may not be familiar with them can check them out. Always looking for suggestions of what people would like to see documented so thanks for commenting it’s appreciated 😊

      @TrekkingwithTaz I myself am new to PG and really starting to see the good things about it, just learned about some 25km long trail by forests for the world. And sorry about not knowing your old school PG. Your video to hedrick lake has inspired me to do that trek, I am hoping this fall.
