This channel will use Biblical truths and critical thinking to challenge your worldview, your ideas of how to worship God, and your cultural values. We will look at some events in light of Biblical examples to show that some things never change. (Ecclesiastes 1:9) We will judge things by what the Bible teaches rather than what is currently acceptable. This channel will present pulpit sermons as well as other content. As a disclaimer: I’m not an apologist nor have I been seminary trained. However, I attended a college where the Bible was taught daily. In addition, I worked closely with a gospel preacher for several years writing his PowerPoint presentations and videoing our worship service. This channel will strive through contributions of others, as well as my wife and myself, to present a Biblical worldview and to present Jesus as ‘the way, the truth, and the life’. (John 14:16) I am a member of the church of Christ and I’m looking forward to going on this journey with you.
Bible Authority (Part 6)
Lanny Smith of the Walton Chapel church of Christ in Lafayette TN is in the third section on Biblical authority. The first two were about the need for authority and the second was the source of authority-Christ. In this section, Lanny talks about how to establish authority (the authority to act). To establish authority in the Bible (or anywhere else) look for direct statements, approved examples, and necessary inference. In the Bible, we can find three types of direct statements: a statement urging us to accept direct statements (1 Corinthians 14:37; a statement urging us to accept approved examples (1 Corinthians 11:1; 16:1); and a statement urging us to accept necessary inferences (Hebrews 7:12; Acts 16:9-11). In Acts 15:1-6, the apostles appeal to direct statements (Acts 15:13-20), approved examples (Acts 15:12), and necessary inference (Acts 15:7-11) to settle a dispute. To establish authority, we must produce a direct statement, or an approved example, or a necessary inference. In the last part of the lesson, Lanny gives an example (The Lord’s Supper) on how to do this. Please share on social media.

The Trouble With the Truth (11.10.2024 PM)
Переглядів 419 годин тому
The trouble with truth is that it never changes and cuts deep. Lanny Smith of the Walton Chapel church of Christ in Lafayette TN uses John 8:31-32 as the text for this lesson. From those verses and other Scriptures Lanny shows that truth is what we need to hear; that sin is lawlessness; that truth exposes our failings and excuses for them; and that truth needs to be passed on so that others can...
Galatians (Part 6)

Lanny Smith of the Walton Chapel church of Christ in Lafayette TN continues our study in Galatians. This lesson will cover Galatians 4:8-31. Paul is concerned that his preaching Christ might be in vain and that they would go back to observing the Law. Paul asserts that both the Gentiles and Jews served idols. In verses 29 through 31, Lanny has a chart titled ‘Abraham Had Two Sons’ to show the s...
Understanding Truth (11.10.2024 AM)
Переглядів 5312 годин тому
It is possible to understand the mystery of Christ (Ephesians 3:1-6) as written by the apostles. Lanny Smith of the Walton Chapel church of Christ in Lafayette TN shows that understanding the truth is a matter of will (John 7:17) but to fail to understand shows that your father is the devil (John 8:43-47). Some things are difficult to understand (2 Peter 3:14) but not impossible. There are clas...
The Mystery of Godliness (11.03.2024 PM)

The last three books (1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus) that the apostle wrote were about the work of an evangelist. Lanny Smith of the Walton Chapel church of Christ in Lafayette TN talks about the mystery of Godliness. “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in...
Galatians (Part 5)
Переглядів 21День тому
In this study of Galatians, Lanny Smith of the Walton Chapel church of Christ in Lafayette TN will cover 3:28 through 4:8. The lesson is introduced by referring to Galatians 3 19-27 as a salvation passage in terms of sons-family-church-salvation. We see that the Law was a tutor but by obedient faith (not faith only) we are made sons of God. The first verses in chapter 4 illustrate from everyday...
Five Fundamental Truths of Salvation (11.03.2024 AM)
Переглядів 28День тому
A simple Biblical view of salvation can be explained without the use of reformed theology or Calvinism and still hold to the sovereignty of God. Lanny Smith of the Walton Chapel church of Christ in Lafayette TN starts with Romans 1:16-17 as a text to show five fundamentals of salvation with logical Scriptural proof. The Bible says that God is sovereign Psalm 103:19); that mankind has free will ...

In 2 Samuel 12:1-15, Nathan the prophet rebuked King David for his sin with Bathsheba. Sometimes we are blind to our own sins but sharp criticism intended to correct our behavior, attitude, or actions is needed. Wesley White of the Walton Chapel church of Christ in Lafayette TN talked about the kind of rebuke that will lead to repentance and the attitude we should have if we have sinned and are...

Lanny Smith of the Walton Chapel church of Christ in Lafayette TN continues our Study in Galatians. This lesson, after a short review, covers Galatians 3:7 through 3:27. Lanny describes faith as trust to do what is commanded. Law (any law) cannot save. The Law of Moses was a tutor for the Jews to prepare them for the gospel of Christ. In John 3:27-35, John the Baptizer answered some questions from his followers about Jesus. He explained that the Father loved Jesus and that He was given the Spirit without measure proving that His works were from God. Lanny Smith of the Walton Chael church of Christ in Lafayette TN shows that there are three additional measures of the Holy Spirit. There was a measure for the limited commission...
Facing the Future with Faith | One Thing (10.25.2024)
Переглядів 3221 день тому
Here is our call to action. What is the ‘one thing’ you can do to change your life? Jesus told several people that they lacked one thing. After you figure that out and change your life, forget the past and press forward in the work of the Lord to preach the gospel. That gospel, if accepted, will change the world (or any nation) and save from the chastening rod of destruction.

Teach and admonish using the Bible: (HEBREWS 4:12 NKJV) FOR THE WORD OF GOD IS LIVING AND POWERFUL, AND SHARPER THAN ANY TWO-EDGED SWORD, PIERCING EVEN TO THE DIVISION OF SOUL AND SPIRIT, AND OF JOINTS AND MARROW, AND IS A DISCERNER ...
Facing the Future With Faith | Marriage--Husband-Wife Relationship (10.23.2024)

The key to saving this world (or any nation) is to have a strong marriage. For men, be a caring leader, but not a driver in your marriage. For women, submit to that leadership as an equal partner. To do that, you both must be selfless. Remember: A strong home must first be broken before a nation can become evil and then be punished by God with destruction.
Facing the Future with Faith | Moses Is Dead (10.22.2024)

Maybe your leader is dead as was Moses who persuaded God not to destroy Israel. Will you now be the person who stands in the gap and builds a wall so that God will not destroy us? God expects us to arise, warn, and lead in the church, in schools, and in government. Most governments want to divide people, to subjugate people and to control by being God. We can ‘stand in the gap’ by destroying er...

The earth is flat and space is a masonic lie. Please study your Bible and find the descriptions of the earth as God has recorded in His Word.
Beautiful message from thr Lord. Thank you, sir.

Wonderful sermon.
With all due respect. God created heaven the earth and the sea. He set the stars in the firmament and it separates the waters from the waters. Space, Sir, is a masonic lie it does not exist. And these comets do not fly, the move with the firmament, they are windows from heaven and the light from heaven shines through.

Does the church recognize a common law marriage?
If both are qualified to be married, they must be married according to the rule of law where they reside. God did not specify the type of ceremony required, civil or religious, but we are to follow the laws of the land. Only a few states recognize common law marriage. Common law marriage requires that couples live together first, which is certainly against God’s law. Common law marriage leads to much legal ambiguity. Why would two people who want to follow God’s law consider this, since a fully legal marriage is so easy to do and recognized by all states in the US?
@@UpwardBoundtoHeaven Thank for the feed back. We a couple in our congregation who have lived together for a few years and they claim to have "married" themselves.

Sorry about the audio problem with the audience microphone. That microphone was either setup incorrectly or the gain on the Blackmagic ATEM was setup incorrectly. It should have been corrected during the recording but wasn’t. I’ve taken steps to prevent it from happening again.
Thank you for sharing.
The audio gets distorted when the mic opens for the room.
Thanks for your comment. The audio bothers me too. But I like to record comments so it's a trade off. I hope someone has a good suggestion for a room mike. Passing a mike around would be better but that would not work for the group. I just listened to the recording: the tech had the settings wrong on the room mike--I'll fix that.

Where exactly does the Bible use the word hell?
In the New Testament, the word ‘hell’ is used 12-14 times depending on the translation. And Jesus used it more times than anyone else. Look up Strongs G1067 [γέεννα (geenna)]. The Jews knew this place as the valley of Hinnom but Jesus and others used it figuratively as a place of eternal punishment of the wicked. Here are some verses for you to read: Matthew 5:22, 5:29-30, 10:28, 16:18, 18:9, 23:15, 23:33; Mark 9:43, 9:45, 9:47; Luke 12:5; James 3:6; and 2 Peter 2:4. Thanks for the question.
@@UpwardBoundtoHeaven Yes, Gehenna is the word that Jesus actually used. "hell" is an English word that did not appear in the original manuscripts. Gehenna was the garbage dump outside the city walls of Jerusalem, where trash and refuse was burned. It is still there today, though no longer used for that purpose. This is the "valley of the sons of Hinnom" where the Israelites had practiced child sacrifice prior to the deportation to Babylon. In revulsion to what their ancestors had done, it was turned into a literal trash dump. So no, Jesus never actually used the English word hell, which actually is derived from the Norse goddess of death, Hela. Everyone hearing Jesus would have known exactly what he was referring to. No Jew would have thought he was referring to an afterlife, simply that he was warning them not to be thrown into the garbage heap, (as opposed to having a decent burial in a grave or a memorial tomb). As you say, it was figurative. This is obvious, as no one actually believes Jesus was commanding his followers to lame or blind themselves either. Here are a few more questions that need to be answered. 1) Where and when did God warn Adam and Eve about eternal burning? He said they would die. Did he hide it from them? 2) Why did God not mention it to the man Adam when passing judgement on him? Adam was the very first man, a perfect son of God. No one that has ever lived had more of a right to know than he did what lay in store for disobedience. Yet God was silent on hell. 3) In the law of Moses, given to his chosen, covenanted people, God does not mention hell as a punishment. It is always death, just like Adam. Why? Why did God in all fairness not warn his people? 4) Are people in hell alive? To be tortured, a person must be alive. How is everlasting life a gift from God (John 3:16) if someone is already immortal? 5) If everyone is either going to heaven or to hell (your 2 doors of where do you want to spend eternity), who are "the meek that shall inherit the earth"? The doctrine of God burning people for all eternity for a brief life of sin is not Biblical. It is unjust and cruel by all standards of morality. In fact, it is repugnant to think of anyone deserving such a fate. At some point, no matter what a person had done in their brief 70 or 80 years, they would have paid enough. It is in direct conflict with Paul's clear statement: "The wages sin pays is death" (Romans 6:23) It is a doctrine borrowed from pagan religions, grafted into Christendom over time and read into verses by it's adherents. Fire in the Bible is synonymous with destruction. The scriptures are clear. It is always everlasting life versus death. Not everlasting burning.
@@dennisjump8655 Obviously, “hell” does not appear in the original Greek manuscripts, because it is an English word used to translate the Greek word, “Gehenna.” We might debate about whether there could be a better translation of the word; but simply saying that the English word “hell” isn’t used in the original Greek proves nothing relative to the issue of eternal punishment! But if what you say is true [i.e., that Jesus was simply “warning them not to be thrown into the garbage heap (as opposed to having a decent burial in a grave or a memorial tomb)”] - how does that deter sin? If our dead carcass is simply “thrown into the garbage heap,” we’ll never know it! Your explanation reduces Jesus to a fool who thinks that not having “a decent burial” is something that will keep a person from sin. And, if Gehenna isn’t literal (which you have already admitted), then what will actually happen to sinners? Please tell us: what does the figure of “Gehenna” stand for? If the only punishment for sin is “death,” then what are we “saved” from? It certainly isn’t death, because everyone dies - even Christians! You say that Hell “is unjust and cruel by all standards of morality.” To what “standards of morality” do you refer? Man does not set the standards of morality, God does. Indeed, there is no morality without God! The issue is: What does GOD say he will do with the wicked? What is hard to understand about the words, “everlasting punishment” (Mt.25:46)? You also say, “At some point, no matter what a person had done in their brief 70 or 80 years, they would have paid enough.” Who are you to say what is “enough” punishment for sinners? Such things are not for you to decide! God alone makes such decisions; He does not answer to you! Your gospel has no “teeth” in it, because there is no real consequence for sin, other than “death.” So, I ask again: please define what you mean by “death.” If it is nothing more than physical death, then no one is “saved” because everyone dies! And, once you have died, you will neither know nor care about what happens after that.
@@UpwardBoundtoHeaven Well, you admit that the word is not what Jesus said. I have a Greek to English translation right here on my desk and it does not say hell. It says Gehenna. The question begs, why change it to a word derived from a pagan goddess (there's a big clue where this doctrine comes from) ? If the man said Gehenna, then that is what it should read. Not a word unknown to him or anyone listening to him. Why is this important? Because the word Gehenna was an actual place, right there for anyone to see. No afterlife attached to it. The word hell on the other hand, conjures up a burning afterlife, filled with demons and pitchforks, torturing people in agony for all eternity with no hope or relief. That is a shockingly different meaning from what the original word meant. It should be noted too, that Jesus says plainly that the soul is both killed and destroyed in Gehenna , not tortured! (Matthew 10:28). As for the thought of being thrown out like trash as opposed to having a decent burial; Jesus spoke of the those in the memorial tombs and in the grave as having a resurrection. This is what the Jews of his day believed. Martha made this clear when talking to Jesus about her brother Lazarus : "Lord, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day". (John 11:24) Jesus confirmed this. On another occasion he says: "The hour is coming when all those in their graves will hear his voice and come out" (some translations say tombs, memorial tombs) John 5:28. Paul repeats the same thought at Acts 24:15. A person unfit to be buried, or in a tomb, but simply burned up like trash, was in danger of not having a resurrection. Complete destruction with no hope of ever living again. It's important to remember and not downplay that the Jews, God's people, did not believe in any sort of afterlife. The nations round about did. God's people believed in death and resurrection, the hope of living again. Exactly where do you think we get our sense of justice? Our sense of right and wrong? Our sense of fairness? We get it from God, we are made in his image. Even a child has a sense of fairness and justice. Our basic human conscience comes from God. His own law spells out his justice. "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, etc." That is a fundamental principle running throughout the law. Like for like. Justice is balance. Torturing someone for ALL eternity; never-ending agony with no hope is unjust by ANY standard. How do you react when you hear of someone setting fire to another? Or of a parent burning their child? Would you hold your child's hand over a flame to punish them? When someone is badly burned in a fire, does your heart immediately go out to them? This is basic human dignity and it comes from God. Ask yourself in all honesty; Could YOU do this to someone? Could you push someone into a fire, knowing that they would not suffer briefly and then die, but go on burning forever? That is monstrous! What a horrible thing to accuse our loving Father of! It is from his adversary the devil! He wants people to believe God is petty and cruel and unjust. Just look at all these horrible hell videos that populate Y/T now. Disgusting. But we don't have to guess or speculate about how God feels about burning his children. He tells us outright: "They (the unfaithful Israelites) have built the high places of Baal in the valley of the sons of Hinnom (Gehenna!), to cause their sons and daughters to pass through the fire unto Molech, a thing I never commanded, nor even entered my mind to do.."(Jeremiah 32:35) 2 Kings 17:17 details it : "They sacrificed their sons and daughters by burning them alive. " God says it never even entered his mind to do such a thing! Some translations say, "nor came up into my heart to do". Yet this is exactly what this evil doctrine accuses him of! Apparently death is not a punishment? When did that happen? You are OK with being dead forever as opposed to living forever? God did not punish Adam enough by just condemning him to death? Jesus said plainly what he saves from: "For God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten Son, that everyone exercising faith in him might not PERISH, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16) Once again, it is life versus death. Yes, everyone dies, FOR NOW. But the gift God gives is everlasting life. "For the wages sin pays is DEATH, but the gift God gives is everlasting life through Christ Jesus our Lord". (Romans 6:23) Death will come to an end "and death will be no more" (Revelation 21:3.4) Also, we reject sin out of our love for God and his law, not because of some morbid dread of torture. BTW, I noticed you didn't answer my questions.
Only Jesus can do that.
Please explain that comment. Did you mean that only Jesus could do that apart from the apostle Paul?
You don’t burn books. That’s what Nazis do…🤨
