Perfect Knob Recorder for a Compact Eurorack Case? Bastl Neo Trinity
Have you been searching for a knob recorder? Something that will record and playback CV in a musical fashion? I was too until the Bastl Neo Trinity was announced. I’ve been excited to get it into my case ever since. My main issue with other knob recorders is that they were large for the function they offered. They often weren’t flexible and it you were sequencing specific things they would be impossible to return back to them. Neo Trinity sorts out a lot of those things and adds a ton more in the equivalent or less space. This is now really a modulation source of all manners - LFOs and envelopes included. Thought I could have taken a very feature specific video manual approach at this, I wanted to try to learn it over a period of time and really integrate it into my case and my use case. I use it to sequence a lot of things including pitch and drums. In the end, this could replace many things, especially if you’re building up a compact case. Clock, envelopes, LFOs, smooth and stepped cv voltage, different length patterns, all that. I also decided to jump in and shake up my filming and editing process, learning some lighting, filming in a couple different places in my house and learning to edit in Resolve. Because I never finished the edit before my kids were off for their summer break, it’s only getting done now. Hopefully it’s worth the wait. Looking forward to making more of these and getting back into the swing. More to come.
Paid Promotion
Bastl offered to send me Neo Trinity if I were to include it in some videos and patching on this channel. It was next on my to buy list which was funny timing. No money changed hands and no one has seen the video before posting. All my meandering ramblings are clearly my own thoughts based on my experience with it so far.

I love sharing in this way cause it shows my excitement for what’s possible with modular and not just an analytical process of filter sweeps etc. I also appreciate knowing a rough transition or two isn’t a big deal. I agree, better to show the possibilities. I definitely think with Neo Trinity I could show it in a 48hp case quite happily. Even better if I had a small fx unit haha. @@roundcornerless partially yes, at least modulation wise though in a smaller range. I agree with that. I looked at Krait from when it was announced as I was following Dni Pro from the Dot which was very cool. For me, the Krait stopped a bit short for what I wanted in a knob recorder though before Neo Trinity was announced, it was probably high on the list. I really liked that it had a mini scope but didn’t like that you changed settings on it by cycling through Mod and only 3 outs and no ins. Neo Trinity UI feels solid to me and more performance focussed, little selector buttons, big buttons for recording below, big knob at the bottom and that ability to change lengths of automation independently in musical divisions or one by one is amazing!

      @@devondaviau you read my mind. I wish there were a place where I could check out modular nearby. I think the closest to me is Cicada which is in Ottawa but I have yet to pat a visit but want to really bad. I’ve ordered everything online, shipped to me so it takes a bunch of research to make sure I know roughly what I’m buying. I’ve purchased from Moog Audio (Montreal), Nightlife Electronics (Vancouver) and as much as I can on Reverb. I also bought one from Perfect Circuit but the import fees were brutal. So so happy you like the vid and what’s coming out of the case! And I definitely relate to that feeling of maybe buying all the same as me would be good. I might suggest to use it as inspiration. Some modules might not be as easy to come by now for instance but when I was purchasing, they were. And now there are so many modules to choose from. I’d say if you can, go slow and identify functions and you might be able to compare price and function using things like modular grid if you don’t already. But of course, if you’re after monosynth sounds with drums and the workflow seems right, I really do swear by things I have in the case. I feel like I most often mix at least 2 outputs from Pizza together as one by itself can sound thin or especially buzzy. Feel like a pretty simple lowpass filter with Pizza would be great for a but of top end control as well. I was surprised at how nice the octave oscillator sounded as a saw wave into C4rbn filter. That buzziness gives a really nice bit for reverb to make some magic. After that, I think I got a 3xmia for mixing attenuation and inverting and then an HPO so I could enjoy that stereo delay and smearing from the Mimeophon. The headphone or output module will likely be high on the list as it’s really limiting to patch pack through the crossfader of O-Coast. Is there anything you feel most interested in exploring for modules? I took the what’s missing approach and that helped me a lot.

    Hello again! From your groove box intro to this exploration, NOISE TOOLS seems to be a huge part of your patches but has received just one micro-nod (slew).. How do you find it as a clock source? It looks like an effective duo with Steppy and solidly supported by the case mults…tx for this video!!

    • @turbotambourine
      @turbotambourine 2 місяці тому

      Heyo! Noise Tools has been amazing! From my scouring modular grid, it wasn’t the most useful by hp. I actually had set to buy 3 separate modules to achieve clock, noise, sample and hold, and slew. It would have had the ability to cv slew as well and possibly act as an lfo of varying shapes but Noise Tools came up used and was basically a third of the price of buying the other 3. In terms of use it has been essentially and was a key piece in removing the tether from 0-Coast which I was clocking from before. I like using it as I don’t have any reference number in terms of bpm. I do wish I could modulate the speed of it to introduce swing but it isn’t absolutely essential. I was way more excited to not have to reduce the function of some modules by having them serve as clock for the case. Modular is kinda like that. It’s hard to set a whole case out perfect. Often as you patch and play you’ll find gaps or things you use way more or want to explore more than what you have set to be in the case. I’d say in most cases that should pull toward utilities but it all depends on you and what you’re making. I’m excited to see where you land. So much fun stuff when it comes to percussion sequencing. Check out Four Bricks Rook if you haven’t yet. It’s an interesting approach to chopping up parts of drum beats allowing you to extend or take a part of a drum beat to repeat.

      That’s amazing! Very fun that the list kinda lines up like that. Thanks so much for watching so glad it’s helpful! I say everyone’s exact modules should vary as to what you’re interested in. Atlantix has a lot going for it and really, if you break normalizations from time to time you stand to learn a lot. If Atlantix has your vibe and it fits with budget and space, go for it for sure. I’m kinda betting that the 1u choices I make won’t be the same as others may make. Excited to figure more of that out though it changes a bit each orientation I present in these videos. Thanks so much for the sub! Lots of ideas to come, some similar builds to this and likely one or two quite different for kicks.

    • @turbotambourine
      @turbotambourine 2 місяці тому

      @@crtzmo thanks so much! This is a continual fun sort of challenge for sure! Drum stuff often takes up a lot of space and when space is limited, you have to get creative or at the very least choose very wisely in building out the case. I found it really helpful to think about it from a need’s perspective. Bare minimum, a kick, snare and hats needs to get sequenced so really that’s only 3 sequences. Then you can pick and choose what fits best for that patch. Steppy would be more like that drum machine sequencing experience and Knight’s Gallop would be Euclidian. You could even take clock for the hats if you needed. Once you have some sequencing, you kinda have to figure out what works. There’s more things that can be helpful to add to the case like a Bernoulli gate like After Later Audio Flip (Branches clone). This could add some more playable probability or to go back and forth between open and closed hats. Anyway, my approach at this point may seem layered and complex but really, start one sequence at a time and learn what you have to work with and make the best of it. Going slow helps to iron out parts that work and don’t and it can be tricky to sort out modular needs based on rhythmic feelings etc (tricky for me as I’m just more used to playing drums vs sequencing them). Let me know if you have any questions! Happy to help!

    Does anyone know what to feed into the Harm input jack to jump from Harmony 1 to Harmony 2 to Harmony 3, etc? Can you feed it a gate? Or does to need a CV source of a specific voltage? Or an offset? Do specific voltages go to specific Harmony numbers? I can't find this info anywhere, including the manual. My goal is to have the BQ switch from harmony to harmony automatically - not using my hand to turn the knob. Thanks!

    • @turbotambourine
      @turbotambourine 4 місяці тому

      So fair! I feel like that would be cool info for Shakmat to include. A friend of mine got this info from them. Table 1: from CO to D#0 2: E0 to C1 3 : C#1 to A1 4: A#1 to F2 5: F#2 to D3 6: D#3 to B3 7: C4 to G4 To clarify, those note ranges can be represented in volts as well if you follow the 1v/oct scale. Also, make sure that if you’re using those values that you have the harmony knob set to full counter clockwise as I believe it will act as an offset. I what the logic was of breaking it down in this way and not just having 8 octaves. If it were broken in 8 octaves you’d be able to feed your pre quantized values into harmony and thus be able to create non-octave repeating scales, so ones that take modes into account. Want me to follow up with Shakmat more about this? You’re the second person who’s mentioned it. Also, do you already have one or are looking at one?

      @@turbotambourine Thanks for the response. I've had a BQ for a while with expander, and I love it. What I'm trying to accomplish (using BQ or something else) is this: I want to use CV (gate/trigger/offset) to automatically transpose my melodic sequence musically in key. For example, let's say I've got a melodic CV sequence going in the key of "C" I want to use a gate/CV signal to automatically transpose the sequence up a 4th to "F" for 16 bars, then another gate/CV signal to automatically transpose it up again to "G" for 8 bars, then a final signal to automatically transpose back down to the original "C." I don't want to turn knobs manually, I want to program it to happen automatically (or perhaps randomly). I could perhaps use some adders, transposers and a sequential switch, but it gets complicated pretty fast. I thought BQ might be a better solution. Here's my idea: If I put my "C" quantization on Harmony 1, my "F" quantization of it on Harmony 2, and my "G" quantization of it on Harmony 3, then all I need is a single CV signal into the Harm input to move it along from harmony to harmony, essentially "transposing" the sequence. Less modules and less patching. Just so I have this straight: If I want the Harm input to jump from harmony 1 to 2, I need to feed it a pitch CV note that is somewhere between E0 to C1? What about just a standard CV offset value in volts? Can it just be a single note that bumps it up, or does that note have to sustain as long as I want the harmony? I emailed Shakmat, but they're probably at SuperBooth this week.

      @@JayHughes-zv5qr I have another way at it but let me know if it doesn’t work musically for you. My knowledge in terms of theory is rather limited. By you mentioning you’d like to transpose your sequence up to the 4th, to me that would be just applying offset cv to that initial cv sequence in the time divisions you are hoping for. Is that what you’d like to do? You can use the transpose in on the quantizer and have that effect any or all of the channels and you can choose to do that via octave, pre-quantizer, or post-quantizer. Are you familiar with that setting and the menu? So you’d need 2 or 3 things to make that happen: 1) a cv sequencer that you can put in those voltages to offset the voltage up or down. 2) that sequencer needs to be running slower than the clock. That could be within the module (varigate has a div function) or with a clock divider. You just want to send that transposing sequence into the transpose in on the Bard. Then to activate the transposition, select the channel in question and press Edit to go into the Edit Menu. Then on the keyboard section bottom right quadrant you’ll see 3 options. The middle one is pre-quantizer. Press that one. Now any voltage above would transposing that whole cv sequence up. Now you just need to set up the cv values on that transpose sequence and you’re in business. You can make the length of that however long and epic as you want or it could be just the 3 transposition.

      @@JayHughes-zv5qr If you want to utilize the minimal amount of modules though and you have the facilities to send just a gate pattern for transposition, you could use another channel of the Bard Quartet in arp mode. Set it to 0 octaves on the Edit Menu and 0 octaves on the Apr Menu, key in the notes that correspond with your transposition and then you can just send that channel a trigger to advance to the next note and then you want to send the out of that arp channel to the transpose TRSP in. Then have the channel receiving CV set up the same as my previous reply. Does this make some sense? Or does it work for your use? I love using it for transposing sequences or changing simple sequences over time. I was considering getting something like Ana 2 so I can also bring the upper limit of notes down or up while leaving the sequence in tact. I’m sure there might be a less involved module to do that also, still learning though. Might do a dive at some point to sleuth something out.

    These groovebox videos are excellent. Super interesting modular content (inspired me to get off my chair and start patching!), but also really dig the effort that's gone into the video production. Great editing and titles and general "story telling". Top notch; love it!

      Thanks so much! I love that! That’s my hope for the videos. As much as modular can be about getting together that perfect system, I love how lost in music you can get with fewer modules than you think. That’s where a lot of fun is as relationships are almost guaranteed. And so glad the effort of the video stuff shows well. I really have liked learning more about that side to tell more cohesive “stories” etc too. Working on the next video and hoping it’s up in time for superbooth but we’ll see.
