    Audi was a pioneer in the use of 4-wheel drive in competition and specifically in rallies, that's for sure. But Mr. Piech's stubbornness in competing with a car as close to street models (the Audi Quattro was conceptually a Gr. A, whatever they say) meant that the competition had more effective vehicles with mid-rear engines (that they did follow in detail the possibilities granted to them by the Gr. B regulations). The truth is that Audi, since the arrival of Peugeot and Lancia with their 4-wheel drive Gr. B, could only win the 1985 San Remo Rally, when Peugeot and Salonen were already champions that year and, on the other hand, the climb to Pikes Peak (due to a broken turbo intake flange in the engine of Vatanen's Peugeot 3 km from the finish), where Vatanen had set the best times in practice and also in the partial times in the race, in which he was winning with clarity. Even so, they were only separated by 7 seconds. The other races were won by Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 and Lancia Delta S4, which were more agile cars with a much more even weight distribution.

    I used to have a yellow and white quattro as a toy car when I was a kid in the 80's. Fascinating to see the legendary Roland Gumpert with his team, covered in dirt, changing a gearbox in rural Ivory coast.

    The much fancied quattro with it's 5 cylinders and four wheel drive was unable to conqure the safari rally in Kenya. The Opel Ascona 400 rear wheel drive rally car,no turbo and on twin carburetors wiped the floor with the quattro.Hehehehe

    • @Vazin
      @Vazin 8 років тому

      Audi was never applauded or honored for the amount of wins or championships won. The result as to why the Audi Quattro was so legendary was it absolute domination when it first appeared. No one had ever thought of Audi as a normal base car manufactorer to literally wipe the floor, running against purpose built rally cars like Lancia. Although the Opel Ascona 400 was the last rear-wheel drive car to win the driver's world championship. But when Audi upgraded the Quattro during 1984/1985, Opel couldn't compete with it, and was seen as obsolete.

    • @Vazin
      @Vazin 8 років тому

      When Audi appeared at Pikes Peak in 1985, they trambled 60 other purpose built race cars to the top and did the same in 86 and 87. Then in 1988 during the Trans Am series, they again dominated the competition on the small and more narrow tracks, but couldn't keep up on the long straights. This was all done on the frame of the else normal Audi 200 you could go down and buy at your local dealership. So it is more the "shock & awe" effect Audi was known and still praised for to this day.

      VIZIN, I do agree with you on one count though, Audi did quite a lot to revolutionise rallying. The quattro more than any other rally car in history brought about unprecedented public interest in rallying which brought about the huge crowds on the stages.

    L'Audi quattro est une des plus belles voitures de rallye jamais construite mais les fans d'audi son tellement insupportables qu'on a juste envie de leur rappeler les tôles que se prenaient la Quattro par la 205 T16 et la LANCIA DELTA au milieu des années 80 avant que la FIA n'abrège ses souffrance en stoppant le groupe B...

      Michèle Mouton is French fool! You shouldn't type on this "site" at all if you are really that ignorant and disrespectful of rally history and its fans. In fact, here is a link to a list of world championship drivers and their respective countries....notice how there is not one driver from USA and only a few from UK en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_Rally_Championship_Drivers%27_champions

      Actually it makes perfect sense. What doesn't make sense is how you can claim youtube is "primarily english". The only "issues issues" here are: 1)Your ignorance of the world 2)Your ignorance in general 3)Your lack of objective fact 4)Any potential offspring you may create (or already have) Do yourself a favor and stop voicing your opinions because they make you seem like a selfish prick.

    Somewhere around 1:02 they talk about, and have a montage of, the Nurburgring. I know they changed the layout of the track between now and then but, alas, I am old enough to recall the prior layout. Unless I am missing something, a goodly amount of that video is not from Nurburg at all. Specifically, they show a series of shots from a chicane where the vehicles go up on two wheels. It looks good, I'll give it that, but I am not actually sure if it's at Nurburg. It actually looks more like the first set of corners at Le Man? I could EASILY be mistaken about this so I won't swear that they're incorrect but I don't recollect anywhere on The Ring that ever looked like that. There's a similar set at Nurburg, sometime shortly after the last bridge, but that's a fairly wooded section. Meh, maybe I am missing something? Anyhow, it's still a good video and well worth the time spent. It was exciting to see the Quatro change the way races were done across multiple fields. It was a time of change and I even went and got a Quantum that was a 'synchro' from VW but borrowed heavily from Audi - including the odd 5 cyl engine.
