CHEM Talks - “Programming protein function to respond to environmental triggers” by Christian Kofoed
“Programming protein function to respond to environmental triggers”.
Many natural proteins have built-in biosensing capabilities that allow their function to be triggered by environmental events, e.g., changes to temperature, pH or Ca2+, post-translational modifications, or through binding to a ligand partner. Rewiring protein stimuli-responsiveness has the potential to generate novel diagnostic tools and ‘smart’ biologics. Reprogramming protein function remains, however, challenging to achieve by rational and computational design. Here, I will present my own work in the field: Using rational protein design in conjunction with protein trans-splicing I will show how a generalizable actuator can control protein function in response to a designated environmental input. Specifically, I will present a novel precision protein tool for the highly cell-selective delivery of various cargoes

“Chemistry is fun!" CHEM Talks by professor Thomas J. Sørensen

“Chemistry is fun! ...but we need to tell everyone”. Chemistry and nanoscience are not the most popular topics in schools and universities. Nobody knows what nanoscience is, as the concept has gone out of fashion. Everybody knows chemistry, but it is a negative concept. This has to change, and to do so I have involved myself in four initiatives aimed at making sure that nanoscience and chemistr...
2024 - Morten Meldal Symposium

In April 2024 we celebrated our Nobel Prize Laureate professor Morten Meldal, University of Copenhagen 70th birthday with friends, colleagues, and students. “I have known Morten Meldal for 40 years since we first met as postgraduate students at a conference in Greece back in about 1984. Now, with Morten having won the Nobel Prize, we are all incredibly proud of him, but more so because for him,...
CHEM Talks - “New chlorine radical source over the North Atlantic” by Professor Matthew S. Johnson

“New chlorine radical source over the North Atlantic” Active chlorine in the atmosphere is poorly constrained and so is its role in the oxidation of the potent greenhouse gas methane, causing uncertainty in global methane budgets. We propose a photocatalytic mechanism for chlorine atom production that occurs when Sahara dust mixes with sea spray aerosol. The mechanism is validated by implementa...

CHEM GUEST Talks Post Doc Michael Martin Nielsen, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Harvard University “Catalytic, β-selective 2,6-dideoxyglycosylations” Mild, catalytic synthesis of β-linked 2,6-dideoxyglycosides remains one of the outstanding challenges in the field of glycosylation chemistry. This presentation will describe the development of a method for 2,6-dideoxyglycosylation...

“A Multidimensional Solution to a Multifaceted Challenge: High-Entropy Alloy Catalysis for the Energy Transition” The transition to a green energy society requires completely new chemical reactions to be catalyzed. Chemicals and fuels, previously based on fossil sources, must now be produced from abundant, stable molecules and renewable energy. These reactions demand effective and scalable cata...

“Glycosylations - with and without catalysts”. Our research interests include biomass conversion, glycosylation chemistry and medicinal chemistry. In this talk, I will focus carbohydrate chemistry. Carbohydrates are omnipresent in nature and glucose is the most abundant organic molecule, hence their chemistry is important to understand, and we are particularly interested in developing selective...
