September 2024, Village Voices: American Presidents in Diplomacy and War
This is a recording of the Village Voices event that took place on September 9th, 2024. This month's Village Voices featured Thomas Parker, lecturer and author.
He worked for 30 years in diplomatic and military affairs for the White house, U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. State Department, and the intelligence community. He argues that Presidential “success is sometimes a combination of prudence and boldness.” For the September Village Voices we heard about those characteristics of past Presidents.
Each month, attend Village Voices to hear about the lives and expertise of Capitol Hill residents through presentations and discussions. Topics include history, politics, the environment, the arts, and everything in between! To learn more about Village Voices contact info@capitolhillvillage.org or call 202-543-1778.

That 20 cent fee you brag about on plastic bags, well it might work in Switzerland, which I agree is clean and beautiful, but it fails in the US where if you have shopped for groceries lately, you will see that most poor people, for whatever reason, use plastic bags. Maybe a different approach is needed, like making recyclers accept plastic film.

Sarah Reeder's personal anecdotes add so much depth to the technical aspects of appraising. Her approach to valuing items not just by their market worth, but by the joy they bring, is refreshing. It's encouraging to think about our personal belongings in this more meaningful way!

Unfortunately Habitat for Humanity spreads the wrong notion - that housing is a commodity to be traded, that it is an investment instead of a human right. I refer you to the recent "Monopoly" episode of American Masters on @PBS. This thinking, which is against the UN agreement on Human Rights, and is against the struggle of low-income people to stay in their homes instead of being banished by the rich onto the streets, is very harmful. It undermines the great mission of Habitat. It undermines the mission of HUD. It hurts poor people.

Great video and thank you. Does the Rosalynn Carter Caregivers (I think it is called) Institute also have resources about this? Another issue of course, which you alluded to and which Iona Services did a short course on, is solo agers, and especially those with no income other than Social Security, who are not going to, in some cases (pardon the pun), have a power of atty lined up simply because they have no such person in their life or that person, a partner, has already died. So many issues and we thank you for this important information, CHV as always God bless you

Thanks for the info - ironic no CC's - and this is great for affordability however frankly Medicaid and Medicare need to pay for hearing care, also it depends on the individual whether they need more or less help with this process or need to undergo it at all.

Scooter manufacturers make those devices to go so fast they do not belong on sidewalks; ADA-compliant curb cuts allow them to access the sidewalks easily and they are a menace. Go after the manufacturers. If they can't go so fast and can't access the sidewalk in the first place who knows it might help.

Getting ATVs off major transit corridors, discouraging that kind of misbehavior, and also sorry Council but cutting back on the legalization of marijuana might help also. There are a couple open-air drug markets around (won't mention place names you know who you are) that remind one of the bad old days with crack cocaine. Legalizing pot was a stupid idea and we are seeing its fruits. Keeping rent help available, making more income equality might help tamp down the understandable level of resentment among some of us on brink of the streets. Thanks CM Allen for your leadership.

Rev Susan Flanders we thank you for this; we attended a seminar of yours and when we saw your name on here we thought: "have to watch this". Things to keep in mind are that folks who have no children or family need to have a place to which to give their advanced directive. The church might or might not be able to keep that in an accessible place?!? Lawyer, some do not have one. Doctor, some do not have one of those either. Again thank you all and God bless you.

Great seminar. Probably a good thing to send to DACL and Seabury et alia, this information. Also remember that not everyone has people close enough to be executors or competent enough to be executors so that is important to get the information somehow to someone(s who will be "there" at one's death.

Darlings, it goes both ways does it not? Who is doing the majority of the carjackings, ATV swarms, etc etc? Young Black poor males. No use dancing around it anymore nor shifting blame to others. Don't know what the answer is other than "All are one in Christ Jesus" and the more people learn and live that out the better.

I read an article on CNN today,April 10th, where this Popadiuk gives a pass to every president from George HW Bush all the way through to the worthless trump and has the gall to say the biggest mistake is supposedly that Biden didn’t do enough for Ukraine. If this guy hasn’t shown his right wing hand before, he has done so now. CNN and its bullshit of trying to be “fair and balanced” is doing nothing but slitting the throat of the Biden administration. Let’s get it straight, the only president that’s put any thought and real action in this has been Biden. The reason the Ukrainians are doing so well on the battlefield is because of the intelligence we’ve provided, the weapons we provided, and the training that we, the British, and the Canadians have provided in NATO tactics over many years. It is understood that the Ukrainians’ world is crumbling right now and it is being destroyed, and that no measure of assistance will seem enough to them. A perfect example is that they scream that World War III has already started which shows that in their insular world they have no concept of what a 3rd World War really entails. And once again a European nation expects Americans to sacrifice their men in defense of a nation that did not do enough to prepare itself for this eventuality.

Did you know that WWII Black veterans and descendants are STILL not allowed GI bill benefits? There is a bill in the house to change this. Authentic CRT seeks to uncover and remedy these inequities causes by systemic racism.
