Gavin Young Favorite Trombone Excerpts
Переглядів 304 місяці тому
This is a compilation of all my favorite self-recorded trombone excerpts for orchestra and wind ensemble. All are recorded on a bass trombone, even though all trombone and tuba parts (as well as sometimes euphonium parts) are covered. Enjoy!
Pre College Trombone Excerpts

This is the second set of excerpts I've put out for posterity's sake. I'm about to go off to college and this serves as a way to track my progress and give a product to show the world for my work. I do not promise perfection (The Gotterdamerung finale is particularly poor intonation-wise), but there are good moments, and it is what it is. All excerpts are produced by me and are on bass trombone...
Self-Made Orchestral Trombone Excerpts

I began playing trombone after making it to all-state on bassoon and soon thereafter getting burnt out on the instrument. I began trombone in the winter of 2021 and started on *bass* instead of tenor because I thought (and still do think) it’s way cooler and I like playing low and loud. I became reinvigorated with music and practiced incessantly until recently. As I reach the end of my senior y...

This piece is so famous ! It is one one of the works along with Bolcolm's etudes made me decide I wanted to create my own music and stop trying to master Chopin etudes . I am surprised that there aren't hundreds of videos on UA-cam essaying the structure and content . There is so much going on in this edifice one could make dozens about each dozen about each dozen of issues ! Thanks for giving me some insight into its magnificence . I was surprised that you don't know French your "encore plus vif","Lent" etc.are not pronounced correctly . You are young but in highschool don't they still require foreign languages I'm in my 50's so i don't know anymore about secondaryschools or education systems in general .
@@MrInterestingthings Haha yeah I took Spanish, so my French knowledge was no good at that time. Glad you liked the video!
Great work
@@santixgallego Thank you!
The volume is too low.
@@dalereynolds8716 It’s supposed to be. Turn up your volume. The loud parts are fairly loud
Thank you for this video. Great help! Just found the scores in our public library and I am blown away by the piece. Time to read more Forte. P.S.: That T-Shirt though. 😅Image Messiaen wearing it…
@@jojena_imm Haha yeah this was a long time ago. Even at that time I wasn’t religious, it just happened to be in my closet… Glad you liked the video
From what century is this piece, it looks very interesting and challenging 😢
@@JosiahSkosana-w4q 20th century! It is among the most challenging in standard piano repertoire 😬
@@gavinyoung3873 thanks so much 🙏
Thank you for the memories! I played Horn II in a performance of this piece in 1960 at Hertz Hall (UC Berkeley), and it has haunted me ever since, prompting me also to analyze it, 10 or 20 years ago. It's such an extraordinary piece, it would be nice to see even more of your thoughts about it in future videos.
Hi, where are you from?
@@normanbates429 The United States. Tennessee, specifically
Stravinsky use "symphonies" referring to the Greek meaning 'sounding together' and Stravinsky described the piece's scheme as "an austere ritual which is unfolded in terms of short litanies between different groups of homogeneous instruments". This piece was written very last minute and Stravinsky found a way to put together a bunch of disparate sketches to create a concert piece. Love the piece and did a score study of my own a few years back on my channel.
Bass trombone really holding up the excerpt. First trombone is not that easy.
Nice video!
@@ValseMelancolique Thanks!
Thanks for sharing Gavin. I've only ever played an old "pea-shooter" (tenor without a trigger) where the pedals are limited to low Bb down to E. Like high range, it takes consistent practice to slowly gain greater access, you just have to chip away for a long time. When I started, it was difficult to even tell if the notes were in tune, they all just sound "low". 😆 The analogy of a thumb on a hosepipe, controlling the spraying water, is a useful one. I currently play with pedals by lip slurring up and down an octave. I believe it's possible to reach two octaves down (but only Bb thru E on my instrument!). I never use these notes in performance, but I find practicing them really improves everything else I play, generally, by strengthening the chops and gaining finer control over the all-important air column. A half-way house between breath-attacks and tonguing is the double-tonguing syllable (usually "K" or "G", using the back of the tongue).
Totally agree! Proficiency in your extreme registers clarify your tone and help with technique at the extremes of normal playing range.
ブーレーズのピアノソナタは大好きな作品です😁(^_^)パッション&エネルギーが溢れる作品ですねー🎉🎉🎉😂😂😂

Thanks :)
In the middle of this very impressive brilliant young man's instructions on notation, I get a commercial. So I'm turning it off, even though there are no knobs to turn.
I don’t decide if/when adds appear. Sorry.
I don't think I could attract pretty girls by playing Pierre Boulez's piece on the piano
SO ?? HOW DOES IT SOUND ?? HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL ?? any other than brilliant mathematical analysis please ??
The point was to highlight the brilliance of this new (at the time) method of serialist composition. My personal musings on the piece didn't seem important for this style of music, since the point is to try to break out of music being *for* "making nice sounds" to "music telling us something about the world" or something along those lines.
YOUR SO CALLED PERSONAL MUSINGS ARE EXACTLY WHAT IS IMPORTANT !! ALL THE REST CAN BE GOTTEN BY MANY ANALYTICAL SOURCES ,,@@gavinyoung3873
I never liked the Boulez sonatas. The Klavierstucke by Stockhausen are far more interesting and have more personality.
That’s a fair opinion.
De la musique ou de la colique ?
Quoi?
@@gavinyoung3873
Glad you took the time to do this. I own all of Boulez's scores of his published works. The score to the 3rd sonata is remarkable - some sheets being 2 feet tall and written in red and green ink
I have a Messiaen "Vingt Regards" from the 1950's with huge ages but not 2foot pages .
Interesting video. Here is my sonatina 'The contemptibly Contemporary Sonatina': ua-cam.com/video/67AIvIfTERM/v-deo.html

Why waste your time on this garbage ???
SUPER
It's random nonsense, pretentious pseudoscience fueling this absolute garbage which is by no means audible to a human being.
no
Boulez is dead. No one still has to pretend to like his music. There is nothing more awful than listening to dated, old-fashioned avant-garde compositions.
Cool opinion. Beethoven and Bach are dead too and people still love his music.
@@gavinyoung3873 : As the saying goes: “Things of quality have no fear of time.” 😎🎹
@@MarshallArtz007 In what way does that not disprove what you originally commented since Boulez is dead and still a topic of academic and lay-person discussion?
@@gavinyoung3873 : Exactly. He is a subject for discussion & analysis, not for listening.😎🎹
@@MarshallArtz007 What’s the difference? Pleasure can be gained from both; even if you don’t take pleasure in listening, his theoretical basis can be appreciated in its historical role.
Wow, awesome music, good analysis, great video man!
Thanks!
Serial music = FAIL. massive FAIL.
Cool opinion
It is hard to listen to the monotonous, constantly nagging voice. And why the awful base cup?
Base cup? And sorry if you don’t like my voice. I was like 16

Fine commentary! Love the shirt, brother.
Preciate ya.
One tip of advice I would give is just to remeber to practice fundamentals because its important to be able to relaxed and consistently
This was a year ago so I have gotten much better since then. Thanks.
That’s the bass that I want but it’s too expensive 😢
Haha man, if this is too expensive than maybe bass bone isn’t for you😂 I’m only kidding, but seriously, it doesn’t go much lower than this! Hope your search goes well!
does the instrument sit in the case niccely or does the gb trigger get pressed down?
Sits perfectly with the triggers suspended in the air!
Would you be able to send some photos because i just bought mine and the Gb trigger needs to be pressed down to fit in the case. Maybe the shop i got it from gave me the same looking case but for a tenor eastman trombone not for the bass trombone?
Hello Gavin, Do you have by any chance scanned the sheet music? :)
Sorry, but I’m pretty sure that would be illegal since the piece isn’t in public domain to my knowledge. You can check IMSLP and see if it is in the public domain, but if not I’m afraid you’d need to buy the piano part (which is quite cheap, I’ll say). Sorry I couldn’t be of much help!
Hit the gym bro
I love being an Atheist; am 10% richer; don’t have a weekly clothing war; don’t have to listen to fairytales; and have no Christian hypocrite friends. Cheers!

Spot on! My mother just received an ear full talking religion with me. She found out I’m an Atheist. That was a great Monday morning conversation. 🤣🤣
Haha can totally relate. It gets better over time.
"The mystery of the beginning of all things is insoluble by us...." Charles Darwin---THAT'S LIFE...NOT THE COSMOS. NOTHING has remotely scratched that statement in 150 years. Urey/Miller han't been advanced in 70 years... just more preening . WTF is DNA 70 years later?! It's not still metal rods & nuts! "If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed, which cold not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications my theory would absolutely breakdown." Chapter 6, "On the Origin..." The 2nd LAW is BY DEFINITION absolutely repudiable of "numerous, successive, slight modification" in non-life. IT'S FN IMPOSSIBLE to get from non-life to life without IN DARWIN'S WORDS, his theory "ABSOLUTELY BREAK(ing)DOWN" ua-cam.com/video/xIHMnD2FDeY/v-deo.html The burden is on the claimant, and you ain't got chitt
"There are only two ways to live one's life: as though nothing is a miracle, or as though everything is a miracle"--Einstein OF FN COURSE!! If nothing is a miracle, nothing is to be expectd beyond the known. If one thing is a miracle; miracles exist and all is possible
can you please provide a definition of the word miracle?
This man is a sophist: slavery was incarceration by the public when dealing with prisoners of war: the alternative being to annihilate them. Sam Harris shows his enemy-free privilege. Slavery was also a welfare-state/safety net given the extreme poverty (PENURY) that he is blind to: = penury free privilege. With ownership of slaves came responsibility for their welfare since a sick slave could faint, causing expensive damage or injury in a communal setting unlike a planation-Runaways couldn't be returned to abusive masters, this means the provision for beating slaves pertained to retaliatory war prisoners-Ask yourself this: why would the hebrews defraud themselves by making "bogus" claims involving Royalty; some of which still exist, that would be summarily debunked? as well as, how do you walk away from slavery with a population-wide transfer of wealth: captors--> slaves? The Ipuwer papyrus corroborates this narrative
Furthermore: how is it that witchcraft is thought of as more than just child's play??
Love Dan Barker 💜
Noah Swallowed by a whale? Thrown into the lion’s den? A woman?
I love how he uses the Bible passages against them. All the quotes he is reading and they still won't care to listen and just say God works in mysterious ways.
Makes Bible study a lot more exciting, that’s for sure!
Weinberg has said famously: 'Good people do good things...bad people do bad things..it takes religion for good people to do bad things' In 1900, Russia/China were global doormats. Germany/Japan were geographically disinclined/unable to rely on enslaving. U.S. had 400 years of enslaving blacks. France/Britain/Netherlands hundreds years enslaving colonies. 1900--"BAD" people were enslaving. "GOOD" people were too weak or uninterested in enslaving. 1950--Germany/Japan had murdered 65 million in WWII. Russia/China 100 million in communism (Harvard Press, "The Black Book of Communism") 1950--"BAD" people murdered amost 200 million. "GOOD" people had ended those genocidal regimes. 2000--ALL THE "GOOD" & "BAD" people were accepted into the U.N. in good standing...even by Israel. "GOOD" people & "BAD" people had completely swapped from good to bad, AND BACK in 100 years. AND RELIGION HAD ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY OF IT!!! (OK..communism was atheist and fascism agnostic) Using the accuracies of large numbers, Weinberg is provably and completely failed in his assignation...BUT THAT'S OK!! THEY'RE GOIM. "Good people do good things...bad people do bad things... it takes gews for good people to do bad things" OFFN COURSE WEINBERG COULDN'T SEE ANY HARM IN THAT IDENTICAL LIE!!!?
Any set of ideas, whether it being fascism, communism, nazism, monotheism, polytheism, can rob man of his morals. So the lesson is, don't follow any set of ideas and fixate yourself on it. Having none of these beliefs means you live by rationality where ever it takes you. Ultimately there is no right or wrong, it always depend. Following a set of beliefs is rigid and blinding.
Daaaaymmmn... Harris and hitchens tore that ass up bitch!
Yesterday (9/27), my mother-in-law got an ear full about her Christain Bible story. I informed her after 39yrs of marriage that I'm an Athiest and believe in Evolution & Science, not the man made story written to control the sheep & women...and I'm 10% richer and a golf or bowl on Sundays.
