What’s a good job for people with ADHD?
Found your video while I was trying to find a spread that incorporated a grocery list. Found your video very endearing because I relate to it so much. The only reason I have success with my BuJo (I just started in January of 2023) is a mantra I created to keep me focused. “Don’t break your promise”. I promised to stay committed a full year. I have missed entries for days at a time and kicked myself and said, “Don’t break your promise to yourself, you matter” and I pick it up and catch up. I’m 6 months in and my journal has morphed a lil each month and that is perfectly okay with me! I’m learning about myself and what I actually like. I started with the index and yearly log, monthly log and weekly log. I learned I need a time map to help give me realistic ideas of what I can actually accomplish within that given day. I’m learning that tracking is just about tracking. It actually helps me to connect the dots of how my mental and physical health intertwine. Turns out, sleep factors into my mood and productive greatly over the months and I literally can now correlate certain times that brought me great angst to a decrease in my self care. Who would have thunk! Lolol 🤦🏼♀️ I hope you have found a groove with the BuJo ! Here are some pictures of my spreads.
I have my iPhone Notes app organized into folders. The app also has a search function. Between the two, I can find anything in seconds. I think many people don’t realize how powerful the Notes app actually is. It has a lot of great features - such as instant scanning of documents. Perhaps you just didn’t know how to fully utilize its features and functions?

For me “bullet journal” is just a notebook with dots instead of lines. I use it as diary, for trackers, lists, spreads… I do have a different book for appointments (agenda) (i dont know the word in english). I don’t care about aesthetics either so I’m really enjoying it because theres no pressure
I love this video because it’s so relatable. Except i dont think my art is bad, i think my art is boring 😢 i always imagine something crazy in my head but it doesn’t translate well to a physical picture. And I’m also so lazy to clean my brushes after, is there a way to quickly clean it? (Yes i have adhd too😂)
I disagree with most people say that it's a fact not an opinion that some art are ok decent, some art bad and some art are good that our artwork has to improve get better because i think that's not a fact i think that's an opinion preference if some think our art drawing/painting is bad, some think it's ok decent and some that think it's good sharing our honest opinions just like most say can't please everyone just because some think it's bad that doesn't mean someone else won't think it's bad there will be some that think it's good i also think art shouldn't be taken seriously to just do art just for fun i think it's ok if some want to improve or if some that don't want to improve i love to do art just for fun i think art is about just having fun i love to draw and paint that's my favorite hobby that's what makes me happy i don't want to do art just to please others by taking it seriously that's just me by being pressure force to do art certain way i love to do art just for fun that's what i enjoy by doing what makes me happy i think there is no right or wrong way to do art drawing, painting and clayart at all that's what makes us unique if we were all the same the world will be a boring place that's not a world i wanna live in i do agree some say think it's ok to be difference that's what makes us unique that's just my difference point of view perspective perception take input on art
Holy Moses. If I wasn't already sure I have ADHD, this video alone would convince me. I have lists of lists and endless half-empty notebooks full of lists and ideas, etc. I know you understand! LOL
I've started using the Filofax notebook system & so far going well! I have several notebooks & with the removable repositionable paper sheets I can write anything in any notebook, take it out & add it to the 'master' notebook on my desk.... Any size fit together so the biggest one on my desk fits all the different sized sheets from the other books so at least all my lists & notes end up in one place. Amazing idea so far!
I completely can relate to everything you said! I think you have great ideas😊😊
I specifically use disc journals ( Arc, RollerBind, Happy Planners ect.) so that I can move lists or idea pages from one area to another. This prevents me from the bazillion notes issue and allows me to create specific journals per topic. I can also revise my system without re-writing items. I just reorganize the pages as my needs evolve. If I start a note or list on my phone I formed the habit of transferring those items to a journal to save memory/cloud space on my device. If it is a long list or involved item, I print it out and paste the item onto a journal page.
So excited to have found your video, what a lovely person you are! As an artist and also a person with ADHD, I can relate to what you said in so many ways. Let me share some of my experience with the bujo then, I hope it helps 😊 I started my first one in 2018, had a very minimal approach to it, and only manage to finish the book at the begging of this year. I always avoided the montlhy/weekly/daily pages that you have to go back and check progress onto something. Hate that. Would never do it. And I love the little hand-drawn calendars... but it's not every month that I felt like it, so I would just skip e be happy about it. Yess, the lists. I would make one-page weekly lists for "normal" weeks, and more in depth weekly spreads for when life throws at your face everything at once. But the lists are more to give me the guidence to take everything "out of my mind" , and provide a guide on how to start my day. Most of them I have never crossed-over after finishing the itens. But every new week I would reference back my last spreads, one for the aesthetic, but also looking for that task who has been pushed-off 4 weeks or more, which usually means it's not that important or I REALLY don't want to do it, so I would revaluate and maybe delegate or just take it of. I also kept a spread for gratitude, were I would write/doodle/collage something that makes me happy, and go back at it when felling the adhd downers. I have recently found out about the concept of 'common place notebook', (and it feels so ADHD friendly), so I have integrated this to my bujo. It ressonates so much with your approach for lists of places to visit and so on, you should definitely check it out. It's now a place to write about all of my currently fixations and cherish them. For my work related projects, I keep a separeted notebook, were I write all the info dump about it, references, ideas, lists, deadlines, tasks, doodles and so one. Has really helped to change the mind focus to "work mode", and helped me be more creative.
Ahhh I love this, thank you so much for sharing these ideas and thoughts. I love the idea of a gratitude spread and not limiting it to words or doodles. I'm going to look into this common place notebook, it sounds like my jam! :)
Your video spoke to me so much. I also fell in love with the beautiful spreads and "nick knacks" of the Journaling world. I started so many layouts and graphs and charts. But what has truly stuck with me is the year at a glance spread I do at the start of each new journal. I transfer all the birthdays and holidays over from the old to the new and pick a handful of schemes to try to stick with in the new journal. I really like your idea of keeping track of lists and consolidating information from other sources. Practical seems to work best for me and my ADHD. Looking forward to following you on your journal journey. Have an awesome day. 🙂
Hi, and thanks! Yeah, I totally feel the same way. I quickly fall in love with what others do, but practicality always wins for me.
Hi 👋🏻
Hi! Thanks for being here and saying hello!
You might want to cover mistakes in your bujo with stickers😀
That's a great idea! I've also started using Flexion pens that are erasable. But Stickers are definitely more fun! :)
My BuJo favorite was titled “I want to live in a world bigger than my calendar.” I loved it but it was getting filled with brainstorms and wordiness none that I went back and ever wanted to reference again… then I found Ryder Carroll again 🎉 at the same time realized my calendar must be the anchor and after trying HOBONICHI weeks mega for a year for its Tiny Size… I started 11/1/22 the monthly sections are appointments/events, the weekly with grid will be ONLY weekly non repetitive info so no trackers unless short term, the future log is 4 seasons since this calendar had monthly already no point for another monthly sections… the extra grid pages are my collections, projects, ideas and anything not already assigned a day Page bleed is an issue I’ve conquered (I cannot use my favorite pens) Also, the amount of my brain dumps require index cards I title and place details on… these may become my collections… often I will use any paper around me old netbooks etc for all my random thoughts, sudden ideas etc that I FILTER NOW AND ORGANIZE before I place into the HOBONICHI sections of they fit OR onto index cards to help me organize them… I get to throw away all the random papers not worthy of my calendar without using up its pages! After watching OPS personality MBTI fav stuff… i need to DO more and plan less… I’ve had some ideas for years but not made progress… I’m finally making progress I can see bc I’m only writing what I did accomplish 🎉
The "do more and plan less" has been the key to me. I get so caught up in writing and making lists and trying to get organized. Most days I need to just get stuff done instead of thinking about it. It's a journey of figuring out what works for you, for sure!
Glad you’re still using your bullet journal for something. Yes, making choices is verrry hard for us adhd’ers! For tabs, some people use washi tape, but I think the mini washi tape-sized “Duck Tape” brand from Joannes or wherever holds much better for me, just take a small piece and fold it over the page edge.
Creative explorer here. Thanks for the pep talk bc actually doing art makes the day feel complete, even if I haven’t done jack otherwise, lol.
Having everything in one 'single source of truth' can help a lot. I use BuJo to track the past, organize the present and plan the future using Ryder Carroll's original approach as described in his book- Audible also has an audio version. Any method will probably work better if you are taking medication too.
Thank you for the interesting video! Yes, it is so nice to see somebody on UA-cam who has my ideal lifestyle. 🤩 Ok so i went through a similar thought process as you on this topic. One thing I thought is that it’d be nice to be able to move pages around and add/remove pages, so a binder would be good. Except a binder seemed too thick for some reason. And you have to leave it open to see it if you have adhd, so it takes up space. Maybe dispensing w the perfectionistic impulse is best? Yeah so to satisfy the urge to make a planner myself and put some creativity into it, I got a Paper Source Perpetual Planner (a beautiful book w yummy paper and gilded page edges, I think it was like $30 😅) *3 months in advance of the new year*, then waited for a day when I could go into an hours long hyper focus, and actually followed through and filled in all the dates and made cute but simple headings for each month for the upcoming year with colored pencils and markers. (Of course I still ended up putting it off until the last second, heh.) This satisfied the creative urge well enough. So it’s still pretty basic, but I can add whatever I want as the year goes along. And i used éraseable colored pencil in case I made an error in filling in dates. I use it for appointments and a daily to do list. I also have a second book that I use for art ideas or whatever random thing I’m into at the moment, and illustrate it if I feel like it. ADHD’ers here might understand why I felt it was necessary to get a binding machine and make this book out of that dotted paper scrapped from some note pads. 😂 (This was part of a whole other thing I got into of binding stuff😃.) When the year changes, I use metallic number stickers for the new year on a new page and paint it a little just for fun. I wish these two books could be combined somehow but I do like having the creativity journal as more of a long term thing. I will say, none of this has solved my lack of motivation, and I may only end up w just a book of cool ideas, but I like keeping track of my ideas and planning as if I am going to do them even if it never actually happens. 🤣🥺🤣🙃
More and more, I'm finding that we all will explore and find what works best for us. I completely get your various ideas and the complications that come with them. I think I have a good tool now for my actual day to day planning, and then its just a matter of deciding which journals I want to use for various creative endeavors. And then, yes, remembering to use them! lol
@@ShannonSorensen sounds like you are off to a good start, good luck and thanks a bunch for your totally relatable video and excellent ideas!
I’m helpless against the charms of a book filled with nicely textured paper 🤩
Yup! I'll take real paper any day over digital media. :)
As others have said, try the OG bullet journal as explained in the book. All that other stuff is folks just flexing to get likes on Instagram.
I tried once to follow people doing BuJo with the intention of 'creating' this and that lists. End up I stopped not even halfway and didn't even bother to fill them. Until recently I felt like there are so many things inside my head that I don't know where to pour them out. I mean typical journal takes too much of me to write. So I looked into the original BuJo - and loving it so far. I don't put any over the top expectation to decorate it. I don't look for any inspiration on how to make a collection. EVEN if I do, i'll just stick to my way, my intention. I really use BuJo now to pour out random ideas like ur doing here and the fact that I know, they are there inside my BuJo, and I can forget abt it and revisit again anytime I have the call; put my mind at ease. Oh btw, I love how in BuJo's monthly log , Ryder suggest that we just write few words of worthy event or memory . Just enough for us to jog down the memory lane when we do the reflection. And perhaps if we have more to write on it, just do so anywhere else. Sort of. hope that makes sense cz I just discover this part yesterday haha
Creative Explorer. I consider all bullet journals, journals, planners, as rough drafts in a way. It's just a notebook where we write, draw, paint, color, glue etc. I also have ADHD, as well as anxiety and depression, so I understand all to well how brains like ours work. 😀I tend to do whatever it is I feel like I need at present, some times it's much more structure, other days it's the more minimal style of bullet journal, and other times it's the artsy type of bullet journaling DeDe Willingham has a whole series called the Society of Ideas, and it's helped me tremendously. I would write ideas down and then a month, or 6 months...a year, later I couldn't find them, now I'm working on putting my ideas down on my current daily page and then transferring it to the appropriate notebook (appropriate...lol! something that is a visual reminder of the types of ideas I have in that notebook). Really enjoyed the video and your outlook.
Creative Explorer. Love the rough draft. Helps you get an idea of what might be working, and others that aren't currently necessary for you at the time. I've gone through soo many restarts and journal fails that I have just made disc journals with my own papers of what had worked for a bit, only for things to have changed from when they were working for me to a point where they were no longer sufficient for anything I was doing at that moment. I'm currently using a black paper sketchbook and colouring the edge of the pages with lines that line up to the pseudo-index on the back that I'm using to keep track of all the different things on the pages. My main student (f7) has gone from frustration at the dark pages having bright lines at the side of it and her not being able to "better decorate" my book, to being excited to see the work progress tracker I've been keeping for us to see what is left for her to do, and how far she has come. Only problem I'm currently dealing with on the journey is that I can't add more pages to the sketchbook and rearrange the pages... Welp, when this one fills up I have an idea of what is currently working, and have a possible way to remedy my frustrations on the current set up using some new paper and my old disc journal supplies!
Yes! Keep fine tuning what works for you with each new iteration. Love that!
For once thank you to the algorithm because, true to form, I went to youtube for advice on this then promptly veered off to three music videos and a random travel video before youtube gently suggested my original goal 😂.
Huzzah! Love when that happens! haha
@@ShannonSorensen it knows me too well 😂 thanks for the lovely vid by the way
Hi! I just found you thru your last video about the bullet journal and decided to sub. I, too, am a creative explorer, but thru writing rather than art. Looking forward to watching more of your videos! 😊
Thank you! I'm so happy to have crossed paths! :)
I love your content especially in how you don't want to lead the pack from a distance but would prefer to share the journey as an equal partner with others headed to the same destination.
It's the only way I know how! But thank you! I have always been a learn as I go kind of gal. I imagine a lot of us find comfort in that.
I really love how authentic and wholesome this video is. I can totally relate to the adhd chaos of journaling. Thanks for sharing your experience, it always helps me feel less frustrated to know that we're not alone in this.
There's so much comfort in seeing connections in the lives of others, I'm glad this helped! :)
Absolutely agree!
A bullet journal just makes me wanna play that game where you take turns drawing lines and whoever has the most squares at the end wins
Hahaha I know, I definitely enjoy a good doodle page. :)
I like your ideas for it. Having an index for your bullet journal will allow you the freedom to make lists wherever you want. I have a couple of bullet journals in use currently along with my planners. One is for a specific work project and the other is personal. I have ADHD too. I recommend watching some of Ryder Carroll's videos on the bullet journal method. Someone mentioned How to ADHD and I also recommend that channel. My actual planning system is a little weird but it works for me.
"A little weird but it works for me" is how I live my life! The hard part is usually figuring out what does work for you and letting go of what doesn't.
I think I am a bujo rebel. I like things about the bullet journal, but my own ADHD fights the system of set up. So I use an off the retail shelf monthly/weekly + 1 notebook. I'm 10 months in with great success. The planner functions as my primary spot, the notebook as overflow parking and a journal. It's been 10 months, and although I get twinges of desire I just watch other people spend hundreds on release of all the new planners and I immediately feel satisfied with my $35 yearly investment. 🤣🤣🤣
Also, if the index feels hard, I index my planner (+notebook in the same space), but I only index what I might actually need in the future. Notes I wrote from an appt, or a follow-up, or maybe a task I do very infrequently.
@@mrsdudeandkids This sounds great, and pretty close to what I am settling into. I'm a big fan of figuring out what works for you, and not getting hung up on trying to fit someone else's system into your routine. And yeah, I'm also a big fan of not spending a ton on planners I won't fully use! <3
Hi I subscribed to your channel!
Thank you!! I hope you continue to enjoy it! :)
Creative explorer and ADHDer.
Sending you high fives! <3
I know what went wrong the first time you tried to bullet journal, because it happened to me too. You saw the idea of a bullet journal and saw all the fancy spreads and you put the cart before the horse. And you ended up being overwhelmed with trackers and spreads and things to do. I honestly suggest you look into the bullet journal method book, it explains that before you dive headfirst into all the fancy spreads you get the basics down as a habit, along with your lists! A bullet journal is a mix of a planner and a to-do list!
Cart before the horse is how I generally exist in this world. haha I will look more into it, though! Thank you for the recommendation!
Yay, an update! Creative explorer 😆 also squirrel, I mean bird...🤔 I'm glad you checked out Ryder's videos, even if you decided it's not the direction you want to go. The concepts he shares are still pretty universal, I think. I'm excited for the next update for what you've been trying now! Also I'm reading Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport which is really good so far. It's all about taking a break from technology for a month, resetting, only adding back what is actually beneficial. Sounds like that's what you did!! A very good thing most of us could use right now!!
Also, I recently catalogued all my books, too, and I used a spreadsheet which made it super easy to add, edit, track, organize, etc. but I understand still wanting to write it out. Just thought I'd share another idea if you have a lot of books or something 😊
I'll check that out! I am definitely entering a chapter of not spending my time on social media in the same way I used to. Taking the IG break helped me break the feeling that I needed to always be checking, scrolling and posting. I feel a lot more balanced. :)
This was brought to me in such a beautiful way, thank you for posting.
I'm so glad! Thank you!
I’m in a rough draft Bullet Journal for my ADHD too! I spy the Theme System journal 🧠
I really WANT to make the theme system journal work for me. I just have to figure out how. Which I'm sure you also understand! <3
I love your video! It's great to hear you and see you again! 🤗💐💞 I like the idea of practicing, and allowing ourselves to be a "creator explorer", as you call it, and recognizing your the efforts you have made.🌺🤗 I appreciate your honest feedback about using the bullet journal, I've had a similar experience, I'm still looking for something that works for me. 😉
Yeah, keep exploring! I think it's a continuous process for us, right? Keep tweaking, and if it's ultimately not right for you, let it go! :)
“With ADHD” great title had to click! I love the aesthetics of bujo journaling and the neat handwriting but I end up jotting down too many tasks then writing 2 pages of thoughts that randomly come. Every planner I bought only gets filled out a few weeks
I can relate to this! I think I'm at a good point of learning about myself and my preferences and habits to really figure out some good systems for myself, which notebooks to use for specific things, while not spreading out across a stack of 10 journals. :P
This is exactly why I started bujo. Need to remember something? Add a page. Also my ADHD got overwhelmed by the creative aspect of it and I went real simple. My productivity went up! I use mine because I'm a work at home mom of kids in a million activities and I have to actually feed these people. And remember to do things. I'm an artist too! And my husband works long hours and I have my fingers in a billion volunteer pies. So I use it to keep track of things like a traditional planner and also notebook.
I feel like we are living parallel lives here! haha I absolutely have to keep it simple to get anything done or remember to use it.
Here's what I've learned to do when I miss a day. I just try not to beat myself up too much about it. I just pick it up that day and keep it moving.
Absolutely! I like what I'm using currently with that in mind. Keep moving, on to the next page. :)
Your voice and demeanour is so so calming (especially for my overactive brain). I’m trying very hard to get a screening for adhd as I’m extremely convinced that I have it. I’m also an excessive list maker which I never knew was a symptom - you’re incredibly helpful in many ways 🖤🖤🖤
Thank you, you're so sweet! Absolutely keep advocating for yourself to get what you need! <3
Yeah, I found very quickly I can't manage tracking more than 2 pages at once, so I have one dense monthly spread, and a completely unstructured daily where I use original bullet journal techniques. I use Google calendar instead of future log, and reference it nightly to fill out tomorrow's daily log.
I'm definitely reworking what I use and how. I have an update video coming up about bullet journaling and what I've learned about how I want to use it. I'm a full supporter of everyone figuring out what works best for them! :)
Thanks for sharing Shannon! I don’t have any pictures to share but here’s a couple things that helped me bullet journal while not being consistent. 1. A brain dump page: I love sketching out new layouts and there’s always something I need to write down that doesn’t have a place yet (eg a new hyper-fixation project). 2. Memory drawings freestyle: I really enjoy drawing memories too but find consistently difficult so instead of creating a page with boxes I just use the page next to my monthly spread and write the date next to the drawing. If I have a month with fewer drawings then I fill the gaps with quotes. That way blank spaces/boxes won’t get me down. I love bullet journaling… when I remember to do it… so it’s better than a diary for me as I can leave it for a day/week/month/many months and just start again on the next page
I love a good brain dump page! Also a big fan of the freestyle drawing like what you're doing. Boxed layouts create pressure and I found that missing days (most days) just made me feel sad or like a slacker. Setting ourselves up for personal success, whatever that looks like, is the way to go!
Update please!! The OG bullet journal system is ADHD-friendly, so I recommend looking into that. It is supposed to be about function first - start simple and figure out what works for you. I'm still trying to figure out my own system after years, but the main thing I've realized is I cannot hold myself to fancy spreads or setting up stuff far in advance bc I /will/ change my mind and/or lose interest. And I can only manage ONE thing, so I combine all the planner/journal/memories/lists in the same journal. What's been working for me lately is: I like a brief future log for reference, then OG monthly list (just number 1-31) for the month ahead, then each week I'll make a small weekly snapshot for events, and then having a rolling daily that takes up as much or little space as I feel like that day. I can write, draw, reflect, make lists etc, whatever I want. Then only after the last day of the week will I set up the next week's simple snapshot/overview and start the next rolling daily. I do use a combo of stamps and stickers, gel pens and markers for some aesthetics when I feel like it, but the only actual essential is my favorite black pen. [Sharpie Gel Pen 0.38] IMHO, 99% of the online "bujo" community doesn't use Ryder's system at all, they just create these elaborate, time-intensive, beautiful, artsy DIY planners on expensive archer and olive dot grid notebooks and call it a bullet journal 😂 Regardless, in the end, everyone has to figure out what works best for them, however simple or elaborate, but for most people, and especially ADHD brains, I'm pretty sure that ain't it. I hope you're getting on well with yours!!
I love the open-endedness of it, it’s one of the few times I think that actually works well with my brain. And YES to simplicity. I’m making an update video this week and that’s a chunk of it. 💗 Thanks for watching and this awesome feedback!
Oh my gosh I love your brain - I think ours are sisters or cousins. People don’t get what hard work it all is. Thanks for this video - I’m going to give this a go. I’ll go and check my stash of many journals I’ve started. Bless our brains 😊
Right? It’s a lot of thinking, and overthinking and over analyzing, all the time! But there are a lot of us. It feels good to find people who really get it. 💗
