@@baronbeauty5437 Thank you. My school play is finished now and I’m happy with my performance. I played him great as I have been told and I think my singing was fine in the end.

@@lexij2208 I’m guessing your school play is over now hope you did well in the end. They wouldn’t have picked you if they didn’t think you would be able to do it. I had the same kind of problem because I’m a bass when I sing but in the end I just sang it a bit deeper and it still sounded fine

That’s ok. We had a Captain who didn’t sing.

it's a reference to Marguerite( to americans known as Camille for some reason..) in " la dame aux camélias" a novel by Alexandre Dumas fils..later made into a play , an opera by Verdi ( La Traviata)and more than a few films..most notably( for americans) the one with Greta Garbo in the title role...in which she died extremely photogenically and romantically 😉

I saw it too, with the original cast. Note that, like most Broadway presentations at the time, they didn't use microphones or electrical amplification.

This and "No Way to Stop It" explain Georg & Elsa's fundamental incompatibility and move the story along.

"How Can Love Survive" does survive in the Wise film, played as a waltz at the ball. Elsa dances with the captain to it after she's sent Maria packing.

Probably because Eleanor Parker and Richard Haydn couldn't sing (Christopher Plummer could, but even he's dubbed). The movie's already long enough, though.

@@hanschristianbrando5588 True enough, but Marni Nixon sang for Peggy Wood, and Bill Lee sang for Christopher Plummer, so someone else could have sung for Eleanor Parker.

Think I remember reading it was left out due to timing of movie. Stage versions usually have more songs. Marni Nixon was a nun in the film

@@liamdavidson4083 Dang, you are absolutely correct; At my age, I don't like memories (and I ain't talking about that song from "Cats".) Memories are either wrong or at best mistaken. I wish I could go to the library.

@@liamdavidson4083 Too bad, at least they should've kept this one in! The songs written specifically for the movie nowhere near as good as the two the Baroness sang with Max and Captain Von Trapp. Perhaps they wanted to keep the entire emphasis on Julie Andrews - not a terrible decision; Julie is a legend, one of the greatest performers! But the exemption of these two songs (and inclusion of the new, too-shmaltzy others) added to the sugar content of the movie; that much-needed (and balancing) spice was removed.

This and "No Way to Stop It" explain the fundamental incompatibility between Georg and Elsa.

Rodgers and Hammerstein did not approve of this song😮 because it doesn't relate to the original and remakes

It wasn’t Robert Wise who cut them, it was the screenwriter.

100% agree! Too bad they were deleted - two of *Sound of Music*'s best.

It was probably the studio that cut these politically 'hot potato' songs - with the box office and (unofficial) censors in mind.

Absolutely! Max and Elsa are Nazi collaborators. And that is totally lost in the movie.

@@felixmarques I never really saw Elsa passively collaborating with the Third Reich. I definitely saw Max doing that, but not Elsa.

@@lauraschoenborn3544Of course if this song had been in the original film it would have completely changed the ending of it because as far as Max helping the Von Trap family escape to Austria, the Captain would have had no reason to trust him whatsoever.

I think in a way it points up the horror of what they're singing about. Doing a silly vaudeville routine while singing about collaborating with the Nazis as a way of advancing themselves or saving their own hides. Terribly ironic.

How is it usually staged?

@@yanagelfand4337 I actually liked the way the Carrie Underwood Version was staged the best. Because you saw the captain’s anger at the two. And when he was singing with them his voice was practically shaking with Anger. Largely thanks to Stephen Moyer’s acting. But it also showed him trying to walk away from the two while they were singing. And they kept following him to try to get him to see their point.

The sudden zoom at 1:56 is particularly odd, especially when their dancing is not focussed on, even when it’s the main focus. So zooming in on Georg is just weird.

@@richardbourton4523 I don’t think we were supposed to see the zoom. I think the camera was supposed to already be in on him before they cut to it. There is no traditional editing. All cuts were live. The way multi-cam sitcoms were.

exactly, max and elsa were made quite bland background characters. the movie was made purely a romance between the captain and maria

Part of the reason they were cut - this one in particular -was because of what was going on in the world; the movie came out right in the middle of the Vietnam War, and a political aspect wasn’t something they wanted to include on too deep a level.

I recently found this version on DVD.

It wasn't Wise's decision. It was the screenwriter's Ernest Lehman. And the whole point was to draw a contrast between the older, starchy, super-sophisticated Elsa vs. the naive unschooled, country girl Maria. Remember, the Capt says something like: Maria, you brought music back to this house. I had forgotten what it was like to sing . . . or something like that. Now, if super-sophisticated Elsa could beat Maria in music, then the Captain would be a terrible dope for dumping the upscale, trophy woman for the hick novice Maria. It's all a matter of balance. So, per the film version, the gift of music was something Maria had and could bring to the table. Elsa didn't have that; and she was going to ship the kids off to boarding school. Elsa would have split the family apart and she just wanted wealth and power.

Yeah but I guess Von Trapp could never share the same views about the Nazis. Also his heart belonged to someone else LOL

This song explains why she wouldn’t be a good wife. This song was needed. You say she would have made a good wife but would she have supported his escape the way Maria did?

She was also in Mr Selfridge as well

Of course I'm three years late in my reply to you (lol!), perhaps it's now on a stream for free or inexpensively rented!
