Catfishing With Ugly Stik CHARTER BOAT Rods
Whoa. I didn’t know weights got that big or that there was such a thing roller rod. The videos where you fish with old stuff from eBay are my favorite. Thanks for the video.
I have the size 20 I use it for a catfish and I want to get on the ocean with it
I’m a fan of Medium action rods for cats. Sensitive enough for a 5 pounder, strong enough for 60+. Perfect amount of stiffness for a hook set unless you have like 300 ft of line out. If that’s the case, a heavy. Just my $.02, we all know what the saying is about opinions though. What’s everyone else’s thoughts?
I don't think there's an industry standard for rating fishing rods. There's quite a difference between manufacturers
Are you still liking these?
@@Matt-to3jo I don’t use them very much to really tell if they will hold up to distance throwing and such. Using them out of the boat, they were great. But I have not really abused them to see if they will stand up to the test of time.
Such a good video. I'm trying to decide between the Penn Squall2 15 Casting Special or the Okuma Cortez size 5-csa. Both have the magnetic casting assist. What do you think is best? Mostly pier fishing is SF Bay.
@@707SonomaComa both of those reels are very capable of doing the type of fishing that you’re wanting to do. I lean toward Penn, I guess because I’ve used them since I was a kid. Just very used to the penn reels. But Okuma is also a very good reel.
@rivercatblues Thank you for your advice.
The current world long distance casting record is held by a bait casting reel. Using a 4 ounce weight and 12--14 foot rod--the record is right at 1000 feet.
Reel men don't need no stinkin drag lol. Nice fish on that reel Jack.
Good job Rick
You think the 40 is a little too big? I have one on order and think I may have gone overboard side wise, I intend to use mine for sturgeon/channels/flathead
@abaddon3735 the 30 size is my favorite but the 40 will work just fine. Especially if you decide to use bigger size mono
Great video! Glad you enjoy the reel, just ordered a saltist myself, I went with the 40 size for the 22 pound drag. Here in MN we find 50+ pound flatheads and 70+ inch 100+ pound lake sturgeon, my abu's are great but I felt the 15 pound drag wasn't strong enough at times especially for big lake sturgeon- which fight harder than any channel or flat I've ever caught.
I have a 30 and a 40 also and both are outstanding reels
Great video! Congratulations. I have seen other videos of guys catching smaller catfish but with the Ugly Stik Striper rods. That Tiger rod you have sure seems to handle them way better. Do you have a video or know of any comparing the Ugly Stik Bigwater Rod vs Tiger Rod vs Striper Rod? It would be nice to see how far up the reel sits, the 'bend' of the rod with the same amount of weight, and maybe cast-ability if possible. Sooo many videos of Ugly Stik rods but nobody compares them side by side.
I have never did a vid comparing ugly stiks. Maybe 🤔 soon though
You sound like an army Sargent 😂😂
lol. Lt.

hey jack you should try fishing wirh triple S channel cat bait formerly it was known as sonnys super sticky channel cat bait and it’s manufactured by Hootman brothers made in Farmington Iowa
I love my 2024 minn kota terrova, it has drift mode. Just point into wind and troll off the sides or horizontal off the back. Now going up wind is always easy which you can use homemade planer boards which allows me to put out 8 rods, on my modified 2023 G3 Camo Sportman 1710 PFX. I say modified because I fish everything out of it from Bass, Strippers, Crappie and Catfish. I made a trolling bar that is straight except for the middle which has a small arch for engine clearance. The entire bar rotates 45○ and a cut board which can be rotated as well. This bar has 3 detent push pins for super fast positioning of bar and cut board. The purpose is to adjust rod tip heights 4 positions- Catfish/Strippers down to tips above water for crappie trolling. The rod holders never need adjusting individually. People are amazed by the use and design. Also fitted my boat with Millennium fishing pedestal umbrellas for both rain and shade for southern heat. To store the umbrellas, my rod locker lid has storage straps which I installed.
I use a couple 20-50# Ugly stick Tigers up here in S.E. AK f or jigging halibut and redsnapper/Yellow eye... good rods in my opinion ... hood choice.. ive replace tops and refuse to replace.. but now ive gotten a salmon trolling stick and i am happy so far!! Quality for half the price. My son uses nothing but stick from trout to steelhead ,salmon, halibut/jigging.. im about to get him a new halibut rod for his bday..that was a nice 54 cat
I hope you’re doing more videos, just came across this that you made many moons ago, there’s new phases that you need to make. Thank you again for these videos
Nice video! What type of camera are you using to shoot your videos?
Using a GoPro 7. Actually probably time for an upgrade, lol
You didn't see that smoke
Chicken or chicken livers??? People tell me all kinds of stuff. You said chicken, so I had to ask.
@@thebigfellar7178 I have caught several blue cat on chicken, chicken livers are good for catfish also but harder to keep on the hook. I also have had good luck with raw shrimp that you buy from Walmart. A lot of small blues and channel cat really seem to like them. Of course if you can get your hands on some Shad, they work well also
What bait do you suggest for freshwater, as far as something that will really catch them, great bait??? I'm just starting disabled vet who finally reached retirement age. After 12 years I finally get a check, but it's not much. But as the wife says even a little is better than none. Looking to buy something that will last me as far as reels. I can sit and fish since I can't walk but a few feet at a time. Do you think this reel will last? A lot of questions, sorry. Any help would be appreciated.
@@thebigfellar7178 I have not used this particular reel very much, so not sure how it will hold up during the test of time. I have used the Daiwa Saltist series reels and they seem to be very solid fishing reels. A little more expensive but I have had zero trouble with them
@@rivercatblues Those are pricey reels. A little too much out of my league. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with Kast King Rover 70. It's $61.09 on Amazon, and all the reviews and Yt videos just rant and rave on how good they are. I'll probably get #2 of them and a couple ugly sticks. Wish I could afford top tier gear, but I can't. Thank you for replying back to me and your advice. Hope you nothing but the best for you and your family. Peace.
Nice video thanks I picked up a 7000 this spring so far so good but biggest is only a 20# FH
Try reeling one In that’s 30-40 lbs when they’re hooked in the back
Those Asian carp make great garden fertilizer catfish is some really good eating food .
How do you store your shrimp if you don't use it all how long will they stay
I usually put it in the refrigerator or a cooler with ice and it will last for a few days. Long term, I freeze it for one more fishing trip and if I still have some left after that, I usually pitch it and buy new bait
why do people say they dont like em if they are made in china that model you are fishing with is made in china is the quality the same as a made in sweden model? im thinking of buying one
I have not had any issues with this reel. It has held up very nicely so far.
i have a vintage abu garcia 5500 that i had 30lb braid on with a 2oz sinker its a bronze bushing reel proly over 200 yards worth of braid i cast to the backing on it lol
Nice cast I throughly 12 and a whole surf clam for striper in th ocean surf 60 my limet any heaver and tide takes everything down the beach😊
My spool tension knob was too loose and dropped in the lake last week. I hope I don’t need it
Sorry to hear that. You might want to see about getting a replacement knob for it. That will help keep the water, sand, or other debris from getting into the reel’s bearing system
Loosen up the spool tension and use your thumb. That's why God gave you thumbs.
There's nothing about this that I don't agree with lol
im a rooky but doesn't it also depend on how tight you preset the brake or is all 100% released ?
Yes your tension knob plays a huge role in the distance of your cast. You just have to play around with it during your release to figure out what works best for you without getting a backlash.
Can u please help me dial in my reels the level wind ones I’m having trouble with snapping lines
Just adjust the line tension knob for the proper weight sinker you are using. I will try to make a video on this subject in the near future.
why did you put back in the water your fish?
Was not hungry for fish that day. Will keep some another day though
Are the black and gold ones penns
Daiwa’s
Diawa Diawa Diawa!!! (I'm chanting) 👏👏😂
Nice Catch
great work
Keep up fishing on🎣.much love 🐟
Was this rod successful for casting distance? Im just asking because ive got one in the cart online
With very heavy weights like 16 ounce 20 ounce and 24 ounce the rod did pretty well. Because of how heavy and stiff it is. But for a long long distance throw with 5 ounce 6 oz. 8 ounce and 10 ounce, the longer rods from 8 foot to 12 foot seem to work the best if they are a heavy enough action to support the sinker
I completely understand what your doing and I've considered it. I use 8 and 9 foot surf rods for catfishing (16 oz) and (20 oz) lure weight. Ive wondered if I used a roller guided rod would it increase my casting even more.
Uhh, what's with the abrupt stop at the end of each cast? When I cast super far the speed of the line coming off the spool always gradually slows down before it hits the water. Are u PURPOSELY stopping it abruptly? If so why?
Just a bad habit that I can’t seem to break. I am working on it though
Abu reels and their clones are wonderful casting reels but they don't offer the retrieval power and durability of more modern Daiwa and Avet reels.
Thanks for video
interesting take on braid, where im from in aus its pretty widely accepted that its harder to work with but gives further cast, good video mate
Try the Okuma Sea Demon too.
May I ask where you purchase the reel from?
eBay
@rivercatblues I tried there, but no luck 😢
@@penthousepapi8695 keep checking. Sometimes a new listing shows up in a few days. I just keep searching
@rivercatblues thanks again. I will do
Thanks for your input, just ordered this reel as my first conventional reel. Fingers crossed.
Great video. I fish in north Alabama for big cats on the Tennessee river and have several of both and like them equally. They are just different. I had to watch the video twice because the first time I was too worried you were going to fall over the side…and that water has to be cold!!!
That was one hell of a day of fishing Jack. Nice job landing those fish at less than 100%.
Nice video sir, thanks and I will share it with my friends
