How to extract & edit a video frame with Lightroom (Part 1)
Part 1 of a two-video series about using Lightroom to edit still frames lifted from video clips. This video includes a compilation of images made at Lake Inverell around the time of the Birdlife Australia campout.
In August 2024, I conducted a Lightroom workshop and a practical field photography workshop during a Birdlife Australia event at Inverell. One of the participants in the photography workshop at Lake Inverell asked if it was possible to extract a still image from a video clip and then edit it with Lightroom. The answer is 'yes' to both questions.
If you wish to extract stills from videos, I recommend shooting 4K video (if your camera supports it). This will give you larger still images to work with. A 4K video will yield an ~8 megapixel image to work with. An FHD (Full High Definition) video will only yield ~2 megapixel stills.
I also recommend shooting at high frame rates (e.g. 50fps, 60fps). Doing so will, naturally, create larger files, but it will also give you more frames from which to choose to select the 'decisive moments'.
The soundtracks in this video are: 'Forgone conclusion' composed by Amotz Plessner and 'Dreaming fields' composed by Steven Landon & Joseph Michael McGregor. Both tracks have been licensed from smartsound.com.

Captures 2406-A 'Lightroom' photobook of 60 captures from June 2024
Переглядів 53Місяць тому
In August 2024, I conducted a Lightroom workshop for bird photographers. I wanted to take something tangible to show participants so created a photobook of 60 images made in June 2024 to demonstrate an alternative way of making photobooks. I believe that photobooks are the best way for me to pass my work down to my family. Framed prints on walls are beautiful, but wall space is limited. A books...
NATUREEL #10: Winter Rainbow Lorikeets

Flowering Banksia ericifolia (Heath-leaved Banksia-"one of the most beautiful banksias in Australia") at Burrawan Nature Reserve have attracted lorikeets and honeyeaters for the previous two months. The action is waning now as the shrubs near the end of their season. This reel's a selection of photos and videos captured recently. It contains 'straight' photos and videos and composites. I used t...

TEN YEARS in the making, 19 minutes to play the story. Make yourself a coffee, sit back and play this on a big screen with the sound turned on-a smart TV connected to UA-cam is ideal. Enjoy two virtuoso performances at once: the music of Fiona Joy Hawkins and the songs of Australia's greatest avian mimic. *NOTE: This revised version has been amended with the etymology of the Superb Lyrebird's s...
When was the last time you cried?

In April I was 'randomly' interviewed at Circular Quay, Sydney, by some young people representing an Instagram account called @common.entertainment. They started with the question "When was the last time you cried?". This video has been lifted from @common.entertainment Instagram feed and appended with the photograph central to the story.
NATUREEL #09: Adapting to conditions

Something different. On a recent trip to my hometown, Inverell, I photographed Australasian Darters catching fish at Lake Inverell and being tormented by Little Black Cormorants that tried-sometimes successfully-to steal the fish caught by the darters. It was a wonderful opportunity for wildlife action photography...when there was sufficient light to facilitate fast shutter speeds. But you had ...
NATUREEL #08: When the target doesn't play

I wouldn't say that photographing new species is a major driver of my interest in wildlife photography. It's nice to see a 'Lifer' (the first specimen of a species encountered in one's life) and even better to capture a satisfying photograph of one. But I don't put a lot of energy into pursuing lifers-I enjoy photographing familiar species again and again in the quest for compelling photographs...
NATUREEL #07: Fishing competition at Lake Inverell
Переглядів 2283 місяці тому
I've been photographing interactions between Australasian Darters and Little Black Cormorants at Lake Inverell and have drawn the following conclusions from my observations: (a) Australasian Darters are the superior catchers of Crucian Carp, spearing the fish with their dagger bills; and (b) Little Black Cormorants are 'parasitic' because they loiter where darters are hunting and harass darters...
NATUREEL #06: Inverell-Bingara-Copeton loop

Here are forty images selected from a day trip with wildlife photography friends Ian & Judy Colley. We drove from Inverell to Bingara and stopped at a few locations from Bingara Common to Lake Copeton. It was a beautiful clear and calm winter's day and we found the most bird activity in the vicinity of flowering ironbarks and a soak. The soundtrack is 'Line by Line' composed by Kevin Harris and...

Forty images from a session at Lake Inverell on 10 June 2022. I was shooting with a handicap. When preparing for this trip to my old hometown, I got distracted and forgot to pack my best camera body, my dot sight, and my monopod! Fortunately, my old camera body (Olympus EM-1 Mk2)-that I did bring with me-has ProCapture. The soundtrack is 'Look around you' licensed from smartsound.com and compos...

Forty images of Australian Pelicans shot during May 2024, plus some slow-motion video. All material was shot with OM Systems OM-1 150-400mm f4.5 TC1.25X Pro lens MC-14 (1.4X teleconverter). I used the EE-1 dot sight to track and shoot birds in flight. Tools used to produce the video: Adobe Lightroom Classic; Adobe Premiere Pro; Adobe Audition (editing sound recordings). The soundtrack is 'Later...
NATUREEL #03: Great Egrets of Lake Cathie
Переглядів 874 місяці тому
This 'Natureel' is a species monograph for the Great Egret, a cosmopolitan bird (found throughout the world). These birds were photographed at Lake Cathie using the OM Systems OM-1 150-400mm f4.5 TC1.25X Pro lens. I use ProCapture modes almost exclusively to give myself the best chance of capturing decisive moments, poses, and sequences of wildlife action. The images were processed in Lightroom...

Wonderful Rob. ❤
Thank you, Barb.
Rob, Every time I look at Eileen's portrait, I love for her grow deeper! You have captured her ethereal serenity and inner peace so beautifully, that it moves me so much!
Thank you, Giang! It is "one for the ages" in our family. I am happy to have made it.
Nice work Roberto. Always up for a challenge.
Thanks, Barb. I suppose so. Anything to keep it interesting and avoid stagnation. Or defeat!
Nice and so beautiful video once again
Thank you so much 😀 Slow-motion makes things look magical.
Excellent shots here! I first noticed the Darter with her catch near 1:01. .. It looks like a huge fish (do you know what kind?) caught and staring down its captor's throat! 😧🐟😅 So could the hungry Darter manage to win the struggle and gulp that whole prey down entirely okay?? The fish seems to be defensively flapping it’s tail about, if eaten, does the unlucky thing get swallowed alive all the way too?! It looks so big still, maybe this isn’t the last for the fish and it can somehow survive the encounter?
Thanks for commenting. :-) The fish is a goldfish (Carrassius auratus) and is swallowed whole by the darter. The fish is not large (c. 12cm). If the darter catches a larger one, it takes longer for the fish to be overpowered and swallowed, giving cormorants a chance to arrive and steal the fish. There's no time for the darter to waste!
Nice video with lovely footages.
Thanks for visiting and commenting. Appreciated.
Hey Rob, at 0:46 is that a feral goldfish being consumed ???
Yes, a Crucian Carp. They've been in the Macintyre since before I was born (I didn't do it!). Now they are fodder for Murray Cod in that part of the river (I helped) and the waterbirds.
What an awesome Natureel Rob. 👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you, Barb.
Wonderful compilation Rob. Some splendid backlighting as well. Congratulations
Backlighting was the best part, Tom. I'll have another opportunity there next week.
Is that a fish hook in the bird's neck at 2:12mins? Great morning's worth of images Rob.
Yes, Denise. :-( Lake Inverell is going off at the moment.
Nicely captured n put together Rob..
Beautiful videos and still images. I enjoyed seeing what you saw.
Thank you for commenting, Denise. I'm having fun developing templates for doing these reels.
Another superb collection Rob.❤
Beautiful Rob. I love how the rain brings a different mood to the scene.
Thanks, Barb. Rain is forecast for tomorrow. If it's not too heavy, I'll go to Lake Cathie to see what's happening-then to coffee.
Pretty as...
Thanks, Wayne.
Well done
Very clever mate
With that many strikes by PF was there a nest near by ?
Yeh Rob keep it coming
Cheers, Darin. I haven't photographed these for a while.
Love it the way you slow it down well done Rob
Thanks, Darin!
Superb work Rob. Thanks for the inspiration to try to get better results.
Thank very much, Gavin. All the best, mate.
Nice work mate 👍
Thank you, Wayne.
Creative edit 💪 What is your microphone of choice?
I've used a Zoom H2n for soundscape recording for about 15 years. Editing of .WAVs in Adobe Audition. I like the portability and versatility of the little Zoom. Sound quality is good.
Thanks so much, Woody. I'm glad you enjoyed it. :-)
Top effort Rob. Very impressive .it gives us all a very good feel for this classic little Aussie icon . Woody .
Looks good..
What a perfect way to launch your new chapter in photography and life. Love how you share your knowledge and weave in a great sense of humour. Cheers for the East Coast of Canada (Nova Scotia :)

Wow this is awesome Rob. How cool to enjoy your OM1 and lens. 👏
Thank you, Kim. Still loving it after almost two years of heavy use.
Looking forward to your adventures. Well done. Cheers
Thank you, Tony.
Sensational !!
My first serious camera was an OM1n. I still have it.
Wow, that was incredible to watch 😊
Thanks so much, Lena!
wishing you all the best and giving you all the support.
Thank you so much!
Great idea! Congratulations and continued good luck!
Thank you, Richard!
That little dance you did at 2:55, so relatable, yes sir! I have felt like that too when I got a photograph of a rare bird, or even just to have witnessed it with my eyes through the binoculars. Such excitement and happiness that's hard to explain to someone who hasn't gotten into bird/nature watching or wildlife photography yet. I can't wait to be over this current exam period to go out with my scopes and my (very cheap, very amateur) camera!
Thank you so much, Kha Ngo. I am so chuffed that you liked the celebratory dance (that I stole/emulated from a 'Father Ted' TV series episode). Hahaha. Got to have fun!
I see this but the big bird is a hawk vs. crows and mockingbirds.
The birds in this video are: Wedge-tailed Eagle (The largest eagle in Australia. We have no 'hawks' in Australia); Australian Hobby (a falcon); Pied Currawong.
Great video. I like your video editing skills it makes it compelling to watch.
Thanks very much. :-)
This is so awesome I appreciate your energy and look forward to your wisdom and creativity!!!! 👌🏽✨🙌🏽🌎
Thank you, Miguel!
some of those bird shots with the rim lighting around the wings. Wow. beautiful.
Thank you, Michael. I am glad that you enjoyed my video.
Here’s to yah👍 bring it on, looks great
Thank you so much! Thanks for your support.
