Large Format Photography, Switzerland Part Two.
For those inspired by Tolkien’s words, a visit to Lauterbrunnen is like stepping into Middle-earth itself. Whether hiking through its lush valleys or gazing up at the seemingly endless cliffs, the echoes of Rivendell can be felt in every corner. It's a reminder of Tolkien’s genius in blending real-world landscapes with his extraordinary imagination.
As you walk through Lauterbrunnen, it’s easy to see how Tolkien could have envisioned this valley as the setting for the elves’ hidden haven. The sound of cascading waterfalls, the crisp mountain air, and the vibrant greens and golds of autumn create an atmosphere that’s nothing short of otherworldly.
In the footsteps of Tolkien, one discovers that Rivendell isn’t just a place in a story; it’s a feeling-a connection to nature’s beauty and a reminder of the peace that can be found within its embrace.

In this video, I visit the stunning landscape that inspired J.R.R. Tolkien’s Rivendell, the home of the elves in The Lord of the Rings. I’ll explore the vast, majestic vistas and share my process for capturing the scene, including: My camera setup. The filters I’m using with Formatt Hitech. The challenges of framing such a complex and expansive view before placing the film holder in the camera....

The film’s back from the developers-cheers, James! In today’s episode of “Will It Be a Masterpiece or a Mess?” I’ll walk you through the sheer thrill of seeing your work come to life... or the crushing realization that you’ve totally botched the exposures. Oh, and bonus entertainment: the wife joined in on the chaos, adding a sprinkle of her unique charm to this madness. Enjoy.

In this video I suppose I am giveng hints and tips on loading film into the film holders before going on a photoshoot. I explain the film loading and the notches that can be located on the sheets and the tent. While loading the film I talk about the Switz culture, some odd things that are very important in the country and of course the reason I am there, Tolkien.

The journey continues into my 11th year documenting the story of "The One Ring" This time my travels take me to the Swiss Alps in search of Riverndale, to also walk in the same steps as Tolkien himself and understand the inspirations for Middle Earth. With my large format camera and 50 sheets of film I spent my time searching for spots to create the perfect image of the landscape with the time ...

In this video I look at the landscape on the final day of the visit and why I choose the locations to set up my large format camera. The autumnal colour of the forest has given great conditions to work in and understand the journey better for those who escaped in the uprising of 1943. I talk about film stock, lens choice and we get a glimpse from inside a house that would have been in residence...

In 1943, the dense Sobibor Forest in Eastern Poland became the site of the largest prisoner uprising of World War II. Jewish escapees faced relentless challenges-braving harsh weather, untamed wilderness, and the constant threat from German forces and partisans. Now, 81 years later, I embark on a journey to retrace their courageous footsteps. #Sobibor #WWIIHistory #HolocaustRemembrance #JewishH...

"This is my second visit to the death camp in eastern Poland, coinciding with the 81st anniversary of the uprising. My purpose is to document the harrowing journey of those who fled in a desperate bid to escape the horrors and death they faced. Through this journey, I seek to tell the world what happened here during World War II, and to shed light on the Nazi regime’s relentless determination t...

Tolkien’s work, particularly The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, is indeed shrouded in a sense of mystery, especially when it comes to the journeys within his narratives. These journeys have sparked much debate, not only because of their geographical and mythical depth but also due to the allegorical, symbolic, and spiritual layers that underpin them. This has been my journey looking into lif...

The ghettos of WW11 were places where the Jewish people found themselves locked away in from the outside world. The final solution was in operation and places such as Wlodawa was at times the last places jews would find themselves before being sent away where they would perish.

This is a quick video of Florence doing her public engagement at Raglan Castle in Wales. She plays a key role in educating people on the species and the hopeful reintroduction of the birds back into Wales. With the journalism and work in the field it is a good way of giving people an understanding to the benefits of introducing a species that was once found in the UK.
