You Have To Make This Pilgrimage At Least Once... - The Classic Reddish Knob Descent
I know I've said this before, but if you're in the Philadelphia area, you gotta make the trek five hours south to the George Washington National Forest near Harrisonburg, VA at least once to experience the long back country descents, unlike anything we have in our region. There are a ton of 2000+ foot descents in the area, but none more famous than The Reddish Knob Descent a/k/a Timber Ridge to Wolf Ridge from the Reddish Knob peak lot. Easy to shuttle, or self shuttle with a bit of a pedaling effort, the trail starts up at the peak at 4390' and drops you down back into the valley with nearly 2800' ft of descending over 8.5 miles, with a few climbs sprinkled in for good measure (and more descending :) There really is a bit of everything on this one from steep loose shale up top, to swoopy grassy flow in the middle to the purpose built rock work filled tech flow that will have a smile on your face for the last three miles.
This video is from a trip in April 2024, during a day of shuttling with @takeaimcycling1546 . These are just the highlights of this one trail, which is just one lap if you come down here and spend a day shuttling. This was our 3rd trail of the day, before we finished with the big dog, Red Diamond (ua-cam.com/video/qJKKDvQoKmg/v-deo.html) . It's a huge day on the bike and so much fun!
Enjoy and please check out www.takeaimcycling.com/ if you're interested in coming to the area!

Here's a shorty video from a frozen Allaire ride with my buddy Chris from a couple of months back. Winter Wonder Wiss - The Wiss at Its Snowy Best

There are few places in the area that are as good to ride after a significant snowfall as the Wiss. While the snow is falling, it can be a little tough once it's gets over four inches without a fat bike, but give it a little time and the terrain mixed with the high user traffic makes for a well packed and surprisingly grippy snowy trail tread that's a blast to ride on any mountain bike. Fall 2023 conditions in the Philly area made for some epic days in the saddle. The consistently mild temps created sustained vibrant foliage and there was just enough moisture and precipitation to keep the leaves from drying out and completely inundating the trails. Brought the camera along for a solo rip at Birdsboro on a perfect fall day. I was on a mission to do some leaf surfing and, as usual, Birds didn't disappoint. Went there around the end of August 24. The bottom third has pretty much been taken over by the homeless. Tents and trash abound. When we saw that the parking lot was empty when we got there on a Saturday morning, we knew something was up. They probably won't bother you, and I don't mind the tents, but the trash is a real eyesore.

    My two brothers and I were over there last season and were on the white trail right near devils pool and got blasted by a bees nest. my bros dropped their bikes on the hive and had to call family for bee spray and suits to get the bikes back before sundown. Then had to bike all the way home 15+ miles on the Schuylkill trail. Never a dull moment on the trails, whether its riding or recovering bikes. I somehow didn't get stung and got away with my bike, they got stung probably 20+ times each. Hopefully next time we visit those trails, that doesn't happen. Either way looked like a blast over there! Always itching to get out to any trails.

    Just was there last week. Couple guys I was with had been there before, but we definitely didn’t get all of it. Place is insanely easy to get lost in. Would love to see them throw up some trail signs.

      Yeah totally agree, very confusing without a guide...that's why we went when it was taped for the race...took all the guesswork away and definitely raised the fun factor

    Oh man, that crash came out of nowhere. Glad it was not serious. With all the leaves down I barely recognized some of these trails. Nice rip by you and Max!

      Thanks Sage! Little sappling took me by surprise on stage 5, about 14.5 miles into a 15 mile day 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ Grateful bike and body were 👌🏻

    I need to get up there. Some may be a bit over my skill, but it does look pretty fun. How's all the climbing?

    • @PhillyMTB
      @PhillyMTB Рік тому

      The climb isn't too bad, but it is 500 feet so even with it being mostly mellow and with switchbacks, 5 laps is a pretty full day

    I’ve been to WC probably like 4 times already and I didn’t ride any of that stuff.😐 Definitely not riding the fun stuff. I really need to look at the map next time.
