Great to see/hear this now 20 or 30 years later! This song was composed in the 1930s by a man from my hometown of Pineville, Louisiana: Robert MacGimsey. He also wrote "Shadrack" - best recorded by Louis Armstrong.

Anne Murray has always been my favorite singer. Excellent version of an old African American spiritual made even better done in AA style. Words remind me of what our Lord said in Luke 23:24 "Father forgive them for they know not what they do." A very sad testimony top how sin has blinded the human heart. He Jesus did for us what we would not and could not do for ourselves! Very sobering, senior Bush might just be reflecting on these great words in the song as he mouths some the words. Priceless!

I might be singing this song as a solo for Christmas Eve at my church. The only thing is the original words have been changed a little bit for this version. It's supposed to be 'the didn't know who you was' instead of were. Still a beautiful song

"How awful" that you think you have to crap on a great piece of music sung by a great performer. Guess you don't have any appreciation for REAL music. Believe me, you are part of a very small minority if you really mean what you say. I hope your Christmas gift is an appreciation of what "music" is. It will enrich your life.
