In 1960 as a child, I saw our grandparents leave Melbourne on the Orcades en route to London via Bombay, Aden, Naples, etc. We went on board to see their cabin, then just before departure, people threw paper streamers to each other. Passengers and those on shore were connected by streamers until they broke as the ship pulled away. Amazing times.

I was lucky to be a passenger on both tge Arcadia and the Iberia, as well as the Oronsay and the Canberra.We didn't go on cruises, we just traveled by ship between Vancouver and Sydney. It was just part of an unusual childhood.

My father joined Orient Line in the late 1950’s and continued with P&O-Orient Line until 1962. Steward. Fred Robinson.

Joined Canberra for her final hand-over month in Belfast, trials, then the Maiden in 1961. Later left her and the sea in late 1963. She had a more varied career than we could have imagined in those early days. When on board, we were never gloomy but Mahler gives the Sydney arrival video a whole different and enchanting atmosphere. Clever choice, thank you.

My family and I left Tilbury Docks, near London, aboard the Iberia on the 13th September 1963. At the time I thought the ship was called the RMS ( Royal Mail Ship) Iberia. My parents, my sister and I were off to a new life in Australia. As a nine year old it was a big adventure, and I have some good and bad memories of the trip. As assisted passage passengers (Ten Pound Poms) we were not all put into one cabin, my father and I were in a cabin with another father and his son, while my mother and sister were in a larger cabin with other women and their children. Both cabins were also in the 'bowels of the ship. Here I am close to sixty years later, retired on Sydney's Northern Beaches, wondering what my life may have been if we hadn't made that trip. I'm glad we did!

Cruised on Arcadia in 1978. Nothing beats her charm. Would like to know if anyone has any footage of her during a 70s cruise including inside video.

Great memories! That was the time when Ocean Liners were real ships, with the proper shape and dignity. Unlike the current generation of "ships" that look more like floating hotels or apartment blocks! Many thanks for the time travel...

My dad, James Robertson Christie worked on board the SS Iberia in the 60’s. He died on board in 1969 and was subsequently buried at sea in the Indian Ocean.

Came to Australia on this ship.

My family and I came on the Iberia.I had my 10th birthday on board. It was a wonderful voyage.

i joined iberia in 1964 as bell boy start of my career we were a floating hotel for tokyo olmypics was a great life with great mates she was a good ship far more beautiful than todays tubs

These P&O ships of yesteryears were far more beautiful than the floating hotels we see today, there is really no comparison; you'll never get me on one of the new cruise liners of today, they are disgusting.

In the 1960,s I was a professional musician contracted to the Geraldo agency in London.he put me on a world cruise on the Canberra,followed by a Mediterranean cruise on the himalaya-similar to the orcades pictured.great times! Thoroughly enjoyed my time on them..
