ESSENTIAL GUIDE: HOW TO HITCH UP A CARAVAN FOR SAFE TOWING
Here's the thing: if you level side to side unevenly on ramps so as to account for uneven ground, aren't you then twisting the chassis?
Thanks for your comment. I'm no expert in the design and build of motorhomes. My understanding is small amounts of levelling (as shown in the video) will not cause too much twisting for short periods of time. I have experienced my bathroom door not closing properly when I have levelled up. My solution was to reduce the height of levelling to release the door and remove the strain on the coachbuild. There is no need to be perfectly level as it only encourages rain water to accumulate. If anyone has any thoughts or insight on this, please comment below.
Subbed👍🏼

Great vids👌🏽
Thank you 😊
From the U.S. This is a great instructive video-perhaps the best backup video I’ve seen. Thank you!
Wow, thanks!
Hi Fliss, I was taught to start the reverse by turning away from the pitch with only a half turn of the steering wheel. Using your method of full lock means the back of the caravan must be nearer to the pitch at the start of the manoeuvre. Can you advise where you put the van at the start please?
A half turn will work if you're further away. This is just my method for easy remembering, but it's not the only way. I usually start with the rear of the caravan approx. 1m past the pitch
I'll give it a go next time we're out and about. Thanks for the clarification.
Great video. Is there a position the caravan wheels should be past the pitch we want to reverse on to ?
I usually start with the rear of the caravan a metre or so past the pitch. It is something you have to play with because your outfit and turning circle on your car will have an impact on your starting position
Top stuff , thanks .
Glad you enjoyed it
Good plan! Last time the jockey wheel was actually under the hitch which stopped me lowering it down to the car. Much messing about with steadies to rectify. Unfortunately, when my wife asked what was going on, she thought I said that the jockey wheel was under the hedge and she nearly had a fit!!
It certainly does prevent any issues and the need to use the steadies to remedy the problem
Oh I've got what you mean now! Adjusting the jockey wheel before unhitching, as you have done, gives more scope for manoeuvrability if required! Thanks dear. I feel so dimdumb! 🤦😬😁
Exactly! More height adjustment both up and down
I've just purchased a used 2 berth which the previous owners are kindly delivering to my local CCC site in a couple of days. It's been 10 years since I last towed anything so I am watching your videos repeatedly til I have it right in my mind what I should be doing! Thank you so much for this. 🙋👍🙏
Congratulations on your new-to-you caravan. I wish you many happy adventures. Keep watching 👀 as we have more videos coming soon!
@@the_trailer_ladyExcellent! Thank you dear. 🙋👍🙏
If the caravan I'm thinking if buying doesn't have these, I'm definitely getting some! 👍🫡🙏
They are great and if you declare them to your insurance company, you'll get a discount 😉
Exceptionally useful for a newbie like me! Cheers m'dear! 👍🙋🫡🙏😁
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent news! Hi Fliss. I'm new to your channel and am so very glad I've discovered it! There is a distinct possibility that I will be buying a used Coachman by the weekend and I will need to refresh my memory from when I had my first caravan in 2014! Cheers m'dear! 🙋👍🫡🙏
Just let me know if I can help with any other caravan queries
This is really helpful as I've just had a towbar fitted with a 7 pin plug. I only want it for the lights on a little used caravan when I get it, but can always upgrade later I suppose. Thanks Fliss. 🙋👍🙏🕊️
Glad it helped
Excellent! Thanks for this dear! 👍🙋🙏🕊️
Thanks for visiting
Excellent dear! No fuss. Just the doing! 🙋🙏🕊️👍
Yes! Thank you!
So true. I always unclamp the jockey wheel shaft and lower it fully onto the floor. The problem I encounter is when hooking up the hitchlock doesn't fully engage with the towbar as I can't unscrew the handle anymore. Usually the bottom of the shaft on the jockey wheel is resting on the metal bracket with the two slots, fastened to the jockey wheel.
I hope this video has helped solve this problem for you
Well done girl
Thank you
Hi again Fliss, I should said, I’m my previous comment, I need to build everything you have said into my ‘Brain Muscle Memory’ and not just muscle memory…lol you probably knew what I meant…😂
I understood mate.....
Hi Fliss, I just wanted to let you know, that I have watched untold videos of learning how to reverse a caravan…Your video tutorial is by far the most informative and the most comprehensive of them all. I will be replaying your video over and over until my muscle memory has all the information firmly locked into my memory banks…thank you for all your wonderful help.
Awesome, thank you! I'm pleased you found my video helpful. I'll be adding more soon, but it's been a very busy season!
Hi videos, could you use the 20p annalogy to reverse in the opposite direction? I am also bit confused as you are steering the same way as you would with just the car without the caravan
Hi, yes, you could use the 20p analogy reversing blind side. It actually lends itself better this way because you are reversing blind side, you are more than likely having to get out of the vehicle and check your surroundings more. You only reverse as normal once you've already got the caravan turning. To turn a caravan, you steer the opposite way to the direction you want the caravan to go. Straighten the wheels to allow the caravan to turn more gradually before steering as normal to follow the caravan around the corner/ onto the pitch. I hope that helps?
Apologies I've just realised what video you were watching. Have you watched my other video for reversing onto a pitch? That covers reversing to the right
@@the_trailer_lady what area of the country do you work in please
@@TinaSaunders-k6e we're in Sudbury, Suffolk
Its easy when you have a shed load of room to swing the car around and there isn't a queue trying to get through . Just buy a motor mover... sensible hassle free manoeuvring even if you are a seasoned articulate driver. Try it on your blind side without an experienced reverse buddy to guide you. An absolute pita...😱
Thank you for your comment. Motormovers are great, but not everyone has one. It's also good to have the skill of reversing should the motor mover not working arrival at the campsite
😂 brilliant advice for newbies 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Fliss where is your company as new to caravanning and your you tube and would like to do a course
Hi. We're based in Sudbury in Suffolk, but I can travel up to an hour from home, and I do work around the country. Please contact me and let's talk. I maybe able to help you
Bloody brilliant. I have been struggling, and sometimes losing skin, with this problem. Thank you.
You are most welcome. I'm glad I've been able to save the skin on your knuckles! Happy Caravanning
I Reverse Onto The Pitch And Use The Mover To Straighton Up And Level, Sometimes On Good Day I Can Get It Spot On, Especially Drivers Side😁👍
Using a combination helps makes it life easier
Use a motor mover. Don't punish your clutch. It has enough punishment just towing about 1500 kg anyway. Maybe an automatic is a better option.
Motormovers are great, but understanding how to reverse, should your battery or mover fail, is a good skill to have
Somers Wood!? 😂
It certainly is. We visit regularly when working in the area
I have great difficulty attaching and locking my tow bar in place. Have you any tips for that please?
Which bit are you having difficulty with? Lining up the tow bar and hitch or actually lowering the hitch onto the tow ball?
@@the_trailer_lady sorry for not explaining well. The tow bar is detachable and I always have difficulty attaching it to the car and locking it in place. Does this just take practice?
@barbsdee3831 ah, ok. It does take practice. Without any innuendo intended, you do need to shove it up there!!! To make sure it is in place, stand on it (if you can) to make sure it's engaged. If it's that awkward, leave it on all the time.
I’ve just subscribed to your channel. We had a caravan and loved it but I sold it when my husband died of cancer 4 years ago. Now I want to buy a smaller caravan next spring. I used to set up occasionally but mostly it was my husband that did it. These are excellent videos to jog my memory. I would always get in a pickle when reversing, so I love your video on that and have watched it over and over. Thank you so much 😘
I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope you find joy in caravanning again. If I can help you, please don't hesitate to ask
@@the_trailer_lady you are very kind thank you 🙏🏻
How far past the pitch should you start to turn ?
I would pull forward 2 mtrs passed the pitch, and start the reverse from there. You're trying to create a curve and not a tight angled turn
@the_trailer_lady ok thanks , had my first effort at the weekend which was a disaster. Your video makes things very clear so fingers crossed for the next try . Many thanks
@@forzahibs let me know how you get on. Keep it slow and never be afraid of taking a shunt!
@@the_trailer_lady I wont :)
It did t help…. I don’t have a caravan.
You're missing out!
How do you reverse into a left side passing place on a single track road. 👍🏽
Great question! I would always reverse back along the road so that you can then drive into the passing place.
@@the_trailer_lady thanks! Heading to the Outer Hebrides for the first time with our new caravan. I have mastered reversing into a bay but a passing place practise is proving difficult. I’ll just do as you suggested. Think I can manage that. 👍🏽😄
Nadat ik dit gezien heb, zal ik altijd beweren dat ik het altijd zo deed 🤣
It's good to know I'm doing it right! 🤣😉
Thank you.
You're welcome
I just bought a tiny caravan 😭 apparently longer caravans are easier to reverse 😂 I also can't buy towing mirrors to fit my car mirrors. I'm retired and losing confidence. Reversing into my driveway is exhausting 😮
Hi. Hopefully, I can help you. What tow car have you got? Shorter caravans are more temperamental to reverse, but they are not impossible. Think of your caravan as a 2 Yr old child - always darting about never knowing quite what they'll do next. A mid-size caravan is more like an 8 Yr old child - still active but a bit more predictable. And a long twin axle caravan is like a stroppy teenager - they don't move very fast at all, and you can normally predict what they'll do next! So with your caravan, less is more. Less steering input to give maximum turning and then steering to the opposite lock quite soon after, and don't let go! My method in this video works brilliantly for smaller caravans
@@the_trailer_lady oh very good about a 2 yr old!! Lol I only have a Toyota Corolla fielder station wagon. It's so low I can't see thru the caravan windows!! There's a pic of my tiny caravan on my community tab.
@crochetingaroundnewzealand you don't need to be able to see through the windows of the caravan. Use the extended towing mirrors or look over your shoulders so you can see the rear of the caravan. It's always the back corners you're watching, not the front.
@crochetingaroundnewzealand if you can buy them, Milenco Grand Aero Platinum towing mirrors should fit your tow car
How I do it... un hook, use remote.
And motor movers are great for this. I just find it quicker to use the tow car to reverse a caravan. It's a handy skill to have should the leisure battery ever let you down!
I love the video, it is super helpful, the bit I never get right, or how to judge is how far to pull the van past the pitch and where to start breaking the straight line to begin reversing the van on to the pitch, do you have any pointers?
Hi. I pull my caravan past the pitch so that the rear of the van is roughly 2 mtrs beyond the corner of the pitch. If I've misjudged it, I use the 20p piece analogy to correct it onto the pitch. 20p is round but has straight edges and corners. The straight edge represents a straight steering wheel (straight wheels) and the corner represents a locked steering wheel (wheels turn as much as possible in either direction). Alternating between these two positions will allow you to control the turn and the angle at which the caravan turns. I hope that helps
When my mum annoys me I’ll send her there I may never see her again she would probably move there anyway 😂
The choice of wine is endless!
Wine not, Oops sorry Why not?
I like what you did there!!! 🤣
Forgot to check the number plate light, and both front marker lights on the trailer were working. Also, most commercial trailers use grease for the tow ball, after use of a commercial trailer you need to thoroughly clean the tow ball with brake cleaner and a rag/paper towels before using a caravan hitch with passive stabiliser system. Just not sure that anyone will use a torque wrench to check wheel nuts on a commercial hire trailer, but actually checking the tyre age/condition/pressures should be a given, along with ensuring they supply a spare wheel/tyre, and either breakdown cover and possibly a wheel brace & jack. As regards, detachable tow bars/tow balls, not every detachable design has a fixing hole for a carabiner, certainly my Westfalia detachable tow bar/ball does not. CORRECTION: Having gone to the Westfalia Website, there is indeed a fixing hole for a carabiner, unfortunately, having a bad back I had to use a mirror to find it as I cannot bend down low enough to see it (or indeed use it), without getting down on my hands and knees and then rolling onto my back, getting back up is more of an issue, this is very frustrating, I'm going to have to persuade my wife to access this, she won't be too pleased. Thank you for your considered response, hence more investigation was necessary along with this apology. Nice to see that the hire trailer has a 13 pin Jaeger Connection used for trailer lights, however, I've modified my own general purpose trailer to use a 13 pin plug, and replaced the 12N+12S plugs with a single 13 pin plug. Another thing to consider is that the tow car might not be capable of towing large MTPLM trailers when fully loaded, since whilst the single axle trailers are likely to be within the tow car manufacturers recommendations regarding braked trailer limits, many cars may have an unbraked trailer limit less than the 750kg legal maximum (my own has the limit for unbraked as 500kg). In addition most twin axle trailers may have a maximum MTPLM of 2000kg, 2700kg, or 3500kg, and it may be the case that to use these the tow car manufacturers recommendations may have lower braked trailer limits (mine is 1800kg), and even if tow vehicles have higher towing limits, the Goods Train Weight may require that the tow vehicle is not carrying the stated laden capacity on the VIN Plate, to transfer that load into a heavier trailer up to the trailer manufacturers laden limit. Whilst I note in the video that the Gross Laden Weight (MTPLM) of that trailer is 1700kg, it really needs to be stated that manufacturers towing recommendations (including Nose Weight and Drawbar Limit), and the GTW on the VIN Plate of the car are not exceeded.
Thanks for your comments. I was asked to keep it to coupling up for trailer safety week as a weights and tow car matching was covered by a colleague that week in a separate video
We're still friends 🧡
we got our camper last year and it mainly stayed at a campground. this year we will going to other campgrounds so i needed to get better at backing it into a site cause i wasnt very good at it with very little experience. most videos i watched were mainly people filming themselves backing up and really didnt explain what they did. this video was very helpful with the step by step procedure of steering wheel position. and/or correction. i was able to get the camper back in the driveway on the second attempt. . had the wife watch it also to make her job as spotter easier.thanks again for the video it gonna make things a lot less stressful
You are so welcome. I'm so pleased I've been able to help you. It's not difficult to do when you know how to do it! Keep following as we have much more content planned!
She is brilliant
Thank you 😊
THANKS ❤ Starting to realise the more i practice and the slower i go, the less stressful for all 😊
The slower you go, the more accurate you are! I'm glad the practice is paying off 😀
I wish I had Fliss beside me when I have to reverse the caravan. I used to do it well but I’ve lost so much confidence backing our caravan now and get panicky because my partner gets so annoyed with me when I make a mistake he is a terrible spotter and stands where I can’t see or here him 😔 You explain it so well I wish I could get my partner to be like that
I wish I could be beside you for a couple of hours to help get your reversing mojo back! Can I suggest a couple of things; 1 - Take yourself off with the caravan to a quiet location and just play around with reversing. Watch the rear of the caravan to see where it goes and adjust your steering accordingly. Remember "steer towards the problem". 2 - have a conversation with your other half and establish some clear communication. If you can't see him, STOP moving! He'll wonder why you've stopped and will soon come to investigate. Tell him he needs to be able to see a towing mirror at all times. If he can't, you can't see him! I hope that helps. I'm here if you need any more help x
@@the_trailer_lady Thank you so much for the suggestions I will definitely take them on board and take the caravan somewhere on my own and do some practice as first my partner being a better spotter I’m not holding my breath. But your video is great and I will watch it over and over again as well as the practice. Thank you 😊
@@nicolelangman9834 you're welcome
For all the people that are new here, and maybe some that are not, when you reverse its a good idea to release the stabiliser, just pull it up a bit, this is from Alko and not just me. it save the pads and also easier to move the van as less friction
Thanks for your comment. I've heard this, but I've never done it myself.
Same applies to the Winterhoff... which is recommended in their instruction manual
I love you video .
Thank you. Keep watching for more content coming soon 🙂
I bought two of these tools, one stays in the car and the other stays in the caravan, had them for about two years and I used one only two weeks ago for the first time, they are a must have tool, thanks for sharing Fliss, 👍.
Aren't they just! With a lot of care and careful connection, hopefully you won't need to use it often, but it's reassuring to know you've got one 🙂
I agree - this is a must-have tool. We got one after our 13 pin socket tool got out of alignment years ago when we were on holiday which then delayed our departure. Fortunately there was someone on site who knew how to realign things. Wouldn’t be without one now. Thanks for sharing.
Are there any other 'must-have' tools or caravan kit you can think of?
@@the_trailer_lady A “must have” for me these days is a lanyard so I don’t keep forgetting where the keys are (possibly an age thing 😄)
@@irenedale5256 I love that top tip!
I don't need an 'engineer' to splice 12vDC; 12 wires in two cables into one cable with 12 wires and fit a 13 pin Jaeger Plug on the end, I did it myself in 30 minutes. If you can wire a mains plug this not much of a stretch.
Thanks for your comment. I personally know where my skills lay, and I'd rather refer to a trusted engineer
