      My basenji does the same thing and I can promise you this spoiled little guy has never had anything “bad” done to him ever. This women’s dogs are incredible, and clearly love and respect her as she does them, so to insinuate something was done to the dogs to evoke such a response is rude and disrespectful.

    My boy has this type of aggression. It surprised me as well. I just think they get comfy and don't want to move, especially during slumber. Now I usually respect his sleep time and like you said, move him with treats whenever I need to.

    Trainer here who has a basenji. I think if you are very good at management and not giving sneaky basenjis opportunities to steal, that can work great. I like to use a camera and set a trap, spy on them, and come in and put them in time out when they think I can’t see because I’m out of the house or the room. It creates the sense that I can see them, even with I’m not with them. Otherwise they know they can just go after the food when I leave the room! Other times, if this behavior is unsafe and has caused harm to the dog because they’ve eaten something dangerous and this behavior needs to be prevented from happening again for the sake of the dog, I think it is ethical to use aversive methods to prevent further harm to the dog. But this is really something that should only be done with the guidance of a professional to make sure all other methods have been exhausted and the method is applied appropriately.

    • @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407
      @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407 Місяць тому

      that is very clever! I tried at some point organising set up with a bunch of noisy items that all fall down when the dog tries to get something from the table, but the scare was not big enough to stop them doing it. many people use water spray bottle but that does not work when you are not around. for now I haven't find a good way how to outsmart my dogs, so we are just managing the environment the best we can 😊

  • @yogiyoda

    My dog is a big scavenger too. I trained her never to take food from counters though. Unfortunately I used an aversive method. If she ever puts her paws on the counter, I startle her with a clap and loud noise. Then I redirect her to her toys or something else. But I never her leave her alone very long with food on the counter though. So I don't know if it's fool proof or only works when I'm nearby. But she still eats things on walks though. I try to catch things, but sometimes she sees and eats things before I realize there is food. I think she is just sniffing the grass and the next thing I know she is swallowing something :(

    • @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407
      @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407 Місяць тому

      so true! unfortunately you have to decide either to let them sniff on walks so they have an enriched walk, but then you cant always react quickly enough if they pick something, or keep them on a short lead but that is not an enjoyable walk... my female learned to quickly pick something up and just close her mouth straight away as if there is nothing there, and only start chewing when I am not looking at her 😆

  • @lilbasenji1
    @lilbasenji1 Місяць тому

    So true!!!!! A basenji’s scavenging instinct is so strong. We can’t leave my eldest basenji alone when there is any type of food on the counter. He has a bad habit of dragging things off the table and onto the floor if he can reach it. He even figured out how to open the pedal trash can in the bathroom to get to the makeup remover and other trash and when he gets caught he runs into my bedroom like as if he did nothing wrong. Meanwhile his daughter will just watch him. She likes to watch the crime, while not participating in it. They are so funny.

    У меня вопрос. Я имею басенджи и хотел бы спросить с какого возраста вы уже начали отпускать с поводка ?

    • @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407
      @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407 Місяць тому

      щенки до месяцев 5-6 или даже чуть дольше обычно нормально без поводка себя ведут и не убегают, потому что еще чувствуют себя неуверенно без хозяина. потом надо смотреть по собаке, чем более уверенной она становится, тем больше риск что начнет убегать от вас далеко, плюс есть стадия когда молодая собака специально начинает тестировать границы и еще больше упрямится и не слушается, чем обычно. я начала тренировки без поводка сразу месяцев с 4, но потом по мере взросления были стадии когда несколько месяцев вообще не отпускала, из за причин выше названных, потом снова отпускала когда поведение нормализовывалось, потом снова нет - то есть смотрела по собаке и ее поведению, пробовала на очень безопасном участке - можно доверять или нет, как себя ведет. на 100% никогда нельзя доверять, всегда есть риск с басенджи, поэтому отпускаем только в местах где безопасно, далеко от дороги, нет диких животных, есть естественные преграды.

    I think that's a primitive dog attribute. My mutt with lots of primitive dog behaves the same way. She gets grumpy at bedtime. She only tolerates some gentle pets. I have to move her with food. She is more quick to growl and snap in general than other dogs but never hurts. It's just a warning. There's an old expression in english "Let Sleeping Dogs Lie" because lots of dogs can bite if woken up scared

    Thank you for raising awareness about the sweet and ugly side of basenjis! This is very important to know about because it can be a shock when/if you first see it as we did with our third basenji 17 years ago (wish we had known back then). But the truth is that the ugly side you demonstrated varies a lot from dog to dog. We've had 6 basenjis over 3 decades and only saw that angry response in one of them and a little bit in 2 others but never saw that in 3 of our B's. Many basenji breeders have been focusing on temperament so that may be less common now. They are just extraordinary dogs and have completely captured the hearts of our whole family! It is very difficult to be away from them for any period of time....Your cuddles on the couch video sums up our constant love affair with the breed.

    I just got a basenji puppy. She is 5 months old. I am struggling with her going #1 and #2 in the house, and getting her crate trained. Any advice as an experienced owner??

    • @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407
      @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407 Місяць тому

      congratulations on your puppy, what an exciting and challenging time! In my experience some puppies can take up to 12-18 months old before they are reliable with toilet. thats why I think the best solution for all is to have a litter tray inside. puppy will learn to use it very quickly, and then you dont need to worry about night time toileting, bad weather, or even diarrhoea. For crate training I advise to use a bigger puppy enclosure where you then put the crate. getting used to being restrained in an enclosure is easier for the puppy and crate with open door can naturally become its sleeping place in the enclosure. then you can start locking the crate for short periods at a time, always giving yummy treats in the crate. There are much more details to that, I had a few videos on enclosures and crates you might want to search and view them. good luck!

Thankyou so much for this reassuring video ❤️ I wish I had seen it when she was a puppy- every potential basenji owner needs to see this!

      thank you very much for your comments! I wanted people with basenjis that have this trait to not be ashamed/scared and not label their dog as agressive. every dog is unique of course, and I can imagine that some are indeed uncontrollably agressive, but in most cases this specific behaviour can be managed with just a little understanding and giving the dog space. 😊

    • @fayestringer
      @fayestringer Місяць тому

      We definitely felt ashamed and isolated. Especially when we turned to the breed community and were told it was our fault. She is now 2 and we definitely got better at managing this behaviour, she has also become slightly more tolerant with age :) it’s just a shame we’ve done it without any support. thanks your your reply! Keep doing what you are doing and educating people about basenjis (best breed ever 😆)

    When greeting people she doesn’t know my basenji tries to get in their face and then does the typical basenji snarl/ growl that they do when greeting other basenji sometimes. It comes across to them like aggression but knowing her and the breed I don’t think that’s what it is. Do you have any advice? I encourage people not to get in her face but it’s difficult as she actively tries to get in their face!

    • @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407
      @oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407 Місяць тому

      I think I know what you mean, my girl sometimes do that if a stranger approaches her on the street while we are walking. I think some more fearful basenjis might do that, and some people especially if they approach fast or have rapid movements, scare them so they do this warning growl. I would just make sure every interaction with new people is pleasant by letting them give her treats, and of course asking people to let her approach first and let her sniff them (but maybe not the face). If they have treats in their hands she would concentrate on the treats, and will relax that everything is safe.

    • @fayestringer
      @fayestringer Місяць тому

      Thankyou! She is definitely a 1 or 2 person dog but likes to observe mostly, it takes a lot of interactions for her to trust someone. She is super primitive in the majority of her behaviour, even more so than most basenjis we have met. I guess It’s like a gamble how wild a basenji will be when you bring them home as cute little puppies, but weirdly I’m glad I got the wildest one of the bunch, she has taught me so much!
