It’s Week 40 of the Improbability Archive, and our 40 weeks of celebrating 40 years has come to a close. To wrap up, we are going back to Rough Magic’s first year of existence: 1984. Rough Magic produced the Irish Premiere of Caryl Churchill’s Top Girls in the old Project Arts Centre - a complex, unflinching study of feminism and class, which did much to raise Rough Magic’s profile, and set the...
1992: The Dogs

Christmas is coming and the turkey’s getting fat... In another “role of a lifetime”, Arthur Riordan played a Christmas turkey in Donal O’Kelly’s endlessly inventive The Dogs, whose world premiere Rough Magic staged in 1992. The play features the family pets speaking in their own doggy language: a dizzying stream of Joyce-inflected neologisms and portmanteau bark-words, with a sparrow, a rat, an...

Midden went on to win four awards, including a Scotsman Fringe First Award. #rm40 #40yearsofma...

It’s time for your 37th dose of Improbability, with the 2016 production of Stewart Parker’s Northern Star. Northern Star combined big, momentous themes with inventive theatricality, following the seven ages of the life of United Irishman Henry Joy McCracken, each one a parody of the style of a great Irish writer. #rm40 #40yearsofmagic #roughmagic40 #irishtheatre #improbabilityarchive #throwback...

For the night that’s in it, we improbably present to you - 1997’s Halloween Night, by Declan Hughes. Watch if you dare! A bunch of hip thirty-somethings sequester themselves in a remote cottage in the West of Ireland for a Halloween weekend of catching up, dressing up and over-indulging, but it isn’t long before things turn sinister… #rm40 #40yearsofmagic #roughmagic40 #irishtheatre #improbabil...

It’s time for your 32nd dose of weekly Improbability. 25 years ago, Rough Magic produced The Whisperers, Liz Kuti’s brilliant reworking of Frances Sheridan’s unfinished 18th century play A Trip to Bath. The play combines 18th-century wit with a very modern attitude about the sexual power of money, making use of love as a mode of manipulation for profit. Directed by: Lynne Parker Cast: Noelle Br...

Loved Mr Townsend's performance in The Linenhall Theatre, Castlebar last night :) Thank-you.
Saw it last night in the kilkenny castle park and it was absolutely brilliant! The effects were great and the entire cast absolutely sucks you in. Hats off especially to Ariels actress, she was spellbinding
I saw this play on Monday night. It was superb:: poetic, bawdy and above all with gorgeous singing. See it now or live a lifetime with regret
Just watched this at the Kilkenny arts festival! Absolutely brilliant! Is there any way to get the soundtrack?
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed the show. We are hoping to release one or two tracks from the show after the Fringe run, and we will post the links here.
A little gem! It looks like a lovely, humorous and creative adaptation of Shakespeare! Interestingly, with Paul Mescal vividly performing - both acting and singing - before neither he, or anyone else, knew, what would happen shortly after...
Literally just found out that Aislon is my cousin on my paternal side while tracing my family on Ancestry and 23and me. Crazy how I saw her on TV and never even knew we were related
