    Michael for this piece I would suggest exploring a greater range of dynamic modulation in the early voicing of the main themes. I feel like there is so much focus on the codas in the Chopin ballades that it distracts from the fact that what defines an interpretation is how the repeated themes are articulated and voiced differently as they re-appear. Really great technical execution.

    Michael I would suggest listening to the Bonyage and Giulini recordings of Rigoletto to guide your approach to how to articulate the voice of the Duke. When Liszt composed the adaptation, it was decades before Caruso had changed the way the opera was actually sung. But if the artistic idea is to play the piece as you would conduct and sing it, I would slow down into some of the vocal climaxes after the first minute. By highlighting and even exaggerating that voice you underscore that he is the only character who is totally insincere.

    Michael I would suggest experimenting with more rubato around the changes in dynamic. As an execution of the skill Chopin wrote the etude to improve, the performance was excellent, but I think there is more art you could bring out.

    The natural flow and phrasing of the music is wonderful, without any gimmicks. And the keystroke form and fingering are beautiful. The independence of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th fingers supports the technique. There is a remarkable improvement from the Chopin performance from a year ago. I'm sure there will be various opinions and impressions, but please continue to evolve like this. I'm rooting for you. By the way, I am a person who has studied music professionally.

    The closest composer to Chopin in the 20th century would be Scriabin

    • @podpivasniki322
      @podpivasniki322 Місяць тому

      Nah man. Their style is completely different. Scriabin's (at least early-mid) is based on complex harmonies with lots of sounds and insane climaxes. Chopin is quite an opposite - infinity brilliant melodies and soul breaking drama in his codas. If we're talking closest to Chopin it's definitely Moskowski (1854-1925).

    • @KingstonCzajkowski
      @KingstonCzajkowski Місяць тому

      @@podpivasniki322 Disagree. Scriabin's use of structure and form greatly resembles Chopin's and Chopin paved the way for harmony based on motivic cells and pitch classes, which Scriabin ran with. There are brilliant melodies in Scriabin and complex harmonies in Chopin, although he doesn't use quite as many extensions as Scriabin (probably picked up from impressionist composers).

    very nice performance. i usually dislike really fast versions of this piece, but you brought out the melody without sounding like you "had to", if that makes any sense. only criticism i would have is that a couple arpeggios in the first half were uneven, perhaps heavy on the thumb. but you really nailed it, amazing performance.

    • @michaeltaomusic
      @michaeltaomusic Місяць тому

      Thank you for your kind words, and I really appreciate the constructive criticism. Yes, I agree, finger evenness in this piece is quite difficult and is something I’m working on.
