Lotus Elise Running Costs 2024
A small video detailing the costs of running an S3 Elise in 2024 using a Lotus main dealer. The Elise S and Cup models will cost the same to service etc. as the powertrain is identical. If there are any questions please comment below.
I understand that some people will be keen to highlight the discrepancy in the video and the text overlay when discussing costs. I tried to remember all the costs when filming and got some of it wrong but the text overlay is correct.

A few laps around Donnington Park during an MSV track day. I'm probably driving at 7/8 tenths due to it being my first track event. Car: 987.1 Cayman 2.7 Tires: Michelin Pilot Sport 2.
Well done Iowan. I'm just revisiting your video - superb stuff; I am the owner of the Type 25 you looked at. There is such a good community around the Lotus marque. The cars are fantastic of course, but it's also well worth gettting together in the clubs, be it MLOC (who put this event on, as well as many other runs) or the Lotus Drivers Club and many others around the country (and the world). I'm pretty sure I'll be back for LiTP 2025 too. I'll be looking out for you.
I hoped to see some older cars . . . like the Elan plus 2, which was briefly visible in the background. Too bad.

I'm also coming up on the one year anniversary of owning my 2005 Elise which cost $1.3k to insure annually via classic car insurance. So far, I've invested $2k for a new seat of Corbeau standard seats with alcantara inserts which have made an absolute world of difference in comfort. The A/C and heat recently went out in due to the fan resistor pack going out, and it'll be a clam removal job to fix. The local shop I have quoted $2.2k to perform the service and relocate the resistor pack, and they'll also replace the radiator with an aluminum one for an additional $1k which I thought would be prudent as a preventative maintenance measure due to the car being almost 20 years old. So in the meantime, I'm simply driving with the top off and toughing out the brutal South Carolina +30 C degree summertime until I'm ready to shell out the $3.2k (~£2.5k) for the service in the next few months. Zero regrets owning this incredible little machine and hope to have it forever. We're very fortunate to be able to own and experience one of the purest and most analog enthusiast vehicles ever built! It never gets old, but all the more fun the longer you own it!!

Love the black tape on the bottom of the indicator lights of the Scura. Elise/Exige S2 enthusiasts know why it there 😉

Wow, ~200 Lotus cars in one setting? Is this an annual event? Would love to plan a trip to visit next year from the US. Unfortunately bringing my ‘05 Elise along may be a bit tricky!
Absolutely, the weather wasn't the best it's been but there were over 200 cars still. Some years in the past have been larger still! So far my friends at MLOC have managed to make this an annual event for over 10 years. We'd love to see you at the event next year, even if your Elise can't make the trip

The base engine is from a Celica, not a Prius. All versions are fantastic however I prefer my NA 2ZZ-GE with the 8500 RPM redline. With the Larini GT2 exhaust is sounds like a Cosworth DFV on Cam. My ABS has never kicked in, even at the track.
I do stand corrected, wrong varient of the 2ZR - thank you! I have to say I am with you there. That sky high redline of the 2ZZ is just something else!

I have the exige s2 and it’s a blast to drive, I’m curious to try the bigger engine exige but I wonder if they’ll feel the same amount of fun, I can ring it’s neck and still not be in triple figures which I love about it.
That's awesome! Absolutely adore the S2 Exige. Something about them. From what I gather, speaking to S3 exige owners, it's a completely different beast. Much bigger on the road so loses the delicacy of your car (and mine!) and gives you a S**t load more performance. So much more torque. But I think on the road the smaller more delicate package is a more appealing choice! But that V6 engine with the sport exhaust sounds AMAZING

Does it not have the later gearbox? My previous 2020 220 Sport had the most delicious gear change, and the mechanism was all on show. Better than the gear change in my 718 Spyder. Recently sold it and changed it for an Exige 390 Final Edition, and I can truthfully say, the Elise sport 220 felt more special in the way it 'felt' to drive. The Exige is a different car.. sounds incredible, has more grip, very exciting, but somehow.. not as pure feeling or delicate in its inputs as the Elise. Enjoy!
Unfortunately not, that came in with the MY17.5 cars. This car still has the old enclosed system which is nice but far from perfect. I think that shift in your old 718 spyder would be a definite improvement. Glad to hear you're back in a Lotus though 😀
@@IowanFlower I suppose you could get an upgraded gear change. The gear change in the Elise sport 220 I had was better than in my current exige.. I have to admit, it's a big deal for me.. so far my previous Elise feels the all round better car for road use... but.. that noise of the Exige.. Thankfully!! ps. I still run a Macan Turbo as a daily, but have had Elise derived cars for 24 years.. they're just the best bang for buck

The headlights always seem worse on low cars because they dont go very far. And yes you do get blinded by everyone because you are so low.
I think youd find a decent set of tyres would wake it up a lot. I had tr1 on my tvr and they were a joke. Could get wheelspin in third. Got some goodyear AS5 and they are miles better. They arent like glue, but they have enough grip to be able to have some fun.
Sounds like a nice balance for road driving. Was eyeing up some A052s but I fear they might be too extreme
@@IowanFlower yes it all depends what you are doing. If you are going full semi slick you have to get them warmed up, only run out when its 10c+, can't go out in the wet, also for road use the road isn't clean like a track so you get all stones stuck in them when they get hot. I'd say leave the extreme tyres for track days etc and just normal sports or summer tyres are fine for any road driving. You also don't want to much grip on the road as you can end up with no fun unless you go way too fast round the bends. There is certainly a balance.

I love lotus. Always been my favourite car brand. I hope to get a exige s s2 one day. But I love my mr2 turbo. It’s very hard to not want it hahah. Great looking lotus. Shame it won’t stop raining. Are you planning to do any track days.
Must admit. I am thinking of getting into an S2 exige... Just something about them! Hopefully the better weather is on the way - I have a track day planned for September at hethel with lotus on track!

As far as I know, the limitation is the gearbox. Komotec does offer different tuning options but does non increase the redline!
