    Thanks for the review. I’ve never played either this or its prequel, as you say there is something very CPC about it. (In fact there is a homebrew sequel on the CPC called “Siemb Chonicles”). Some nice variety in the game by the looks of it. I am shocked you managed to complete it, well done - it look for all the world like of one of those old games that is too difficult to even contemplate such a thing.

      I am pretty sure I wouldn't be able to complete it as easily back in the day. I think extra 3 decades of gaming experience was helpful. Plus I guess I was having one of those rare days I had extra patience lol. Thank you. :) The game isn't very long so I believe if you sit down with the goal of finishing it you will succeed.

      Thank you very much. I don't think the game excels at anything, gameplay wise, but it is fun to play, including the platform parts which are never my favorite parts of a game. If you are ready for the high difficulty and are willing to keep trying for at least 20 min of losing constantly, I think you will get the hang of it and enjoy it. After that, finishing the game is not THAT hard.

    Nice video, Trusty! There are many games like this that we know are bad when we weigh everything up objectively, but there's just no denying their charm. At the end of the day, if you are having fun that's the whole point really.

    Yes I did make a video about this game on my main UA-cam channel, 8 years ago, but it was a very different type of video as I was making them more of pick up and play videos than anything else. With some exceptions of course. Having said that, I admit I forgot I made that video till after I finished with this one. But...this is the only video of this game on this retro exclusive channel so...I don't know where I was going with this.

  • @thejoyofsticks

    It’s almost impossible for me to judge this game objectively, it’s so wrapped up in my Star Wars fandom and nostalgia for both the movie and this game itself. A warm fuzzy glow obscures my analytical mind. I just love it to bits. In fact, I just got a brand new mouse adapter for my ST, so I think I’ll boot this up tonight. Great video, Trusty!

    For once I am familiar with the game being covered. It’s certainly shallow but I guess reflects the arcade in that way. It occurs to me now that the graphics/game style probably emerged from Battlezone which you covered recently, also from Atari. I don’t personally find ST Wars offers much more as a game, but that one is where my nostalgia lies as a copy came with my second hand ST BITD.

    • @TrusteftRetroWeekend
      @TrusteftRetroWeekend 5 місяців тому

      Fair enough. I mean, I wouldn't pick any of them over more complicated games, but that doesn't make them bad games. One must not forget Star Wars is an early 80s arcade game, that was just ported to ST in 87.

    I played a PD clone of this from a magazine coverdisk in the early 90s. It whiled away a few short minutes as you say. There probably aren’t many games that are quicker to reach the “you’ve seen everything there is to see” stage, measured in seconds surely.

    • @TrusteftRetroWeekend
      @TrusteftRetroWeekend 6 місяців тому

      The camera movement is a bit jerky IMO, Not low framerate, just to clarify that. I don't know, perhaps because there is no option to play with a mouse controller which is analog is to blame. I have only played Starglider with a mouse and it is far easier on the eyes for me. This is a good pick up and play game, definitely not one to play for hours, but it can provide entertainment for a play or two. :)

    • @TrusteftRetroWeekend
      @TrusteftRetroWeekend 6 місяців тому

      From what I heard there is very limited lightgun support for the ST, like a handful of games and I am not sure if Die Hard 2 is one of them. If you have an Atari ST computer there is no necessary installation. You just insert the first disk and switch on the computer. IF you mean on an emulator you could use one of Hatari, SainT, STeem emulators which provide all the relevant info too. I admit i never thought of making a video on how to set one up as I assumed people knew. I will think about it. Thank you.

  • @AmAtAm
    @AmAtAm 6 місяців тому

    I’ve never picked this one up, or picked up that it is a 3D Afterburner clone, which is a useful description since it clearly isn’t a flight sim but on first glance could look like one. The funny thing is that on the Amstrad CPC, the same game from the same publisher is a creditable side scrolling shoot em up in the style of p47 Thunderbolt or UN Squadron. Good on Zeppelin for trying something so much more ambitious in the 16-bits, instead of just picking up where they left off with the 8-bit version.

    • @TrusteftRetroWeekend
      @TrusteftRetroWeekend 6 місяців тому

      Very interesting. Thank you for sharing. I guess they tried to do something similar that was done with Enduro Racer (the bike game) where on the ST is a port of the arcade and on some 8-bit systems it is an isometric racing game.

    I have played this game on my ST for hours on end. I loved it and I still kinda do. However, last month, for the first time in my life, I experienced the arcade game. That is something in a whole other ball park and I feel I only now understand this game. The arcade game is fast, frantic, addictive as hell. And the trackball controls are spot on. I loved every bit of it. This ST port is cool, but honestly, to me, it is another game... I really want to experience all those other Atari classics the way they were meant to be played now.

    • @TrusteftRetroWeekend
      @TrusteftRetroWeekend 7 місяців тому

      I remember checking Megapede's videos (pretty sure your video on it too) years ago. A good take on it, but let's face it, I am not that much into the gameplay to begin with. I am not sure what other game you were referring to. Yes, I am not certain why there is no mouse support in this game, perhaps it was too difficult to properly implement it?

  • @AmAtAm
    @AmAtAm 7 місяців тому

    This was very useful to see, I’ve been keeping an eye out for this for a long time and it’s uncommon, but I haven’t wanted to spend a great deal on it because I don’t expect I’ll play it for very long! It’s interesting to hear about the difference to the arcade and yes in hindsight it would have been preferable to do a great job of replicating the simpler arcade graphics. I can see why they thought this would be better though. (For the even simpler unfilled polygon graphics fix it will have to be Catch 23 by Martech then, I couldn’t stand those graphics back then but could easily enjoy them now.)

  • @AmAtAm
    @AmAtAm 7 місяців тому

    Centipede and Millipede have never floated my boat, maybe because I simplistically categorise them in one big ‘Space Invaders spinoff’ genre with galaxian, gorf and countless others and I don’t really like Space Invaders all that much. This looks a a decent enough port though, I don’t ever remember seeing it before. Ooh I missed that you had done. Battlezone video last week, will go back and check that out.

    • @TrusteftRetroWeekend

      I have to admit I was never a huge fan of Space Invaders either. Similar to the original Tetris (yes), it always felt like a game with a very artificial time limit in everything but name. After a while the game increases in speed so much that it becomes impossible to beat. Not my idea of fun.

    The Atari 8 bit version on cartridge is very similar to this version but graphics are a bit simpler and it's less colorful. The Atari 2600 version is nothing like this, abandoning vector line graphics for colorful raster ones but it's still a very good game in its own right.

      I was never exclusive. Even back in the day. I am sick of the way some choose to ignore the ST line, including the current Atari name holders, but I was always in favor of all systems and played a variety of them back in the day. I even owned an Amiga. I was gaming on IBM compatibles before the mid 80s and even had access to 464, 6128 and others. It's just that my relationship with the ST was the love at first sight relationship. I will have more videos on other systems, but make no mistake, I love the Atari ST.

    Cool video and nostalgic story and history lesson. It’s a shame this is not a good port as it looks like it had a lot of potential. Excellent. I have read this isn’t a very good version but I never knew why. I’ve never actually been a fan of Tetris or games like it but I have had plenty of enjoyment out of Tetris Pro on A1200 after you recommended it years ago, more and more the quality of the music in a game affects how much enjoyment I get and the music (and colour palette and controls) on that are delicious. I’m 80% certain the 1926 at the start was deliberate but 20% of me has to check, sorry.

    Cool video and commentary as always. This doesn’t look like my type of game as the only puzzle focused games I usually enjoy are matching row games like Tetris or Poyo Poyo . I don’t mind puzzles, but I typically prefer them to be incorporated in a game that isn’t solely focused on puzzles. I guess survival horror or Zelda games are a good example of what I mean by having puzzles, but not being exclusively puzzle focused. This games reminds me of The Adventures of LoLo Series on the NES. It was a lot like this, but the levels were a bit larger and it was castle themed. The main characters kind of looked similar though. Do these types of games scream spherical characters? I used to get frustrated playing it sometimes. My best friend at the time wasn’t good at most other genres in games, but could play and beat puzzle games like it was her super power. I remember struggling at a certain points in puzzle games and she’d pick up the controller like it was the easiest game in the world. I remember having the game that was a lot like this and she was just breezing through it like it was reflex based. Ah I miss those memories. Anyway, thanks for sharing another cool game out of your archives with interesting commentary as always.
