The Power of Music in Liz and the Blue Bird
Liz and the Blue Bird is a movie I keep coming back to, and after seeing it enough times it's become one of the most musically effective films I have ever seen. There is a power to its music that really drives home the theme of connection, so I decided to break it down as best I could.
I'm a freak for some good tunes, what can I say?

Haruhi Suzumiya: The Anime That Defied Traditional Narrative

Today I unleash my inner art fart and tell you what makes Haruhi Suzumiya’s narrative defiant and uncanny. Its watch order, structure, and texture have proven to be at once unique and controversial, and for me something that screams of something cinematic. Also, something about cold lasagna. 0:00 HARUHI IS POSTMODERN 1:05 HARUHI IS UNORTHODOX 4:35 HARUHI IS DATABASED 8:05 HARUHI IS CINEMA 12:55...
The Slice of Life Anime That Really Chooses Life

A Place Further Than The Universe is a fantastic slice of life anime that I decided to revisit after so many years. Its themes of life and desire resonated in a way that made me want to make a personal video summing up my thoughts on it. Nothing too fancy, just wanted to talk about it and get some stuff off my chest. Also, I hope you've seen Trainspotting. 00:00 - I. Choose Life 01:32 - II. Our...

How Spy x Family Maintains Its Appearance

Sound Euphonium: The Philosophy of Understanding

Sound Euphonium is one of the most genuinely moving anime I've ever seen, with careful emphasis placed on the theme of understanding each other. When I had recently rewatched Liz (along with the whole series in prep for S3) the very first thing that stood out to me was the music. And when I went to listen to the soundtrack on its own I was taken aback by the methodology at work, the fact that it wasn't just diegetic sounds I was listening to, but that it was simply a part of the soundtrack, that supradiegesis. When I listened to the soundtrack bereft of the context of the movie at work, it just felt so ethereal, because, I could still clearly picture and be within that space without fail, in a way that felt so deeply personal and interconnected to the whole of the movie, that it wasn't just a soundtrack I was listening to but the heart of what that piece of art in its entirety wanted to show. So yeah this was very insightful, and I appreciate the amount of research and thoughtfulness put into this (and by virtue, putting into lucidity what I've been trying to synthesize about how I feel about the music in Liz as well). The whole music as a narrative frame is something that is just so special that LIz really does nail through and through

Thank you for this video. I personally don't need to be sold on the series because I already love it, but I like that this video introduced a framework through which I can interpret it and in turn made me understand the framework better. Though I have not looked into postmodernism myself, so perhaps there are others who could find chinks in how you applied it. Otherwise, I agree completely with how people need to consider a different approach when watching Endless Eight. Also, it's pretty interesting how the presentation of different narratives is all ecompassed within the series with (1) the series adapting another work with its own language; (2) the different narratives Yuki, Mikuru and Koizumi give about Haruhi's nature; and (3) Endless Eight's diegetic reflection of the fan experience as you've now listed in the other comment with Evans' full quote. I have not watched your other videos (yet), but keep it up.

A few things worth pointing out: 1) Having a non-linear narrative alone isn’t what makes Reservoir Dogs and Infinite Jest postmodern, but that’s a discussion for another time. 2) I realize that Haruhi Season 2 originally aired in-between a remixed, chronological re-airing of Season 1 3) Upon further inspection, I felt like I took out some important context in what Jonathan Evans says about the Endless Eight, so here’s the entire quote: “While it may not have been popular, the sequence does demonstrate the fan experience. Having already read the prose and comic versions of the story, a fan would come to the animated version knowing already what will happen in the narrative. The fan approaches the text looking for differences and developments in the telling of the story. ‘Endless Eight’ offers this experience within its diegetic world as well as its multiple iterations across media. The experience of repetition in adaptation and ‘Endless Eight’ is not, as Freud (2006: 141-142) would have it, one of control, but rather a spiralling out of control, away from any one definitive version of events or text. The fan experience of the story, crossing several media (and languages), is always contaminated by the other possibilities in the other media. It offers a way of exploring the multiple possibilities of the story, just as Haruhi Suzumiya does (unconsciously) in ‘Endless Eight’. As Henri Bergson noted, repetition ‘calls the attention … to a new detail which had passed unperceived’ (1988: 111). Fans are looking for this new detail: adaptation across media allows them to find it again and again in the multiple iterations of the tale.”

One thing that makes this understanding concept click particularly well is how Kumiko sort of subconsciously ties together ensemble music with connection. One moment from the first episode that sticks with me is how Kumiko only makes a decision to join the band after remembering nostagically how she learned how to play a wind instrument from her sister, so she could play with her sister. I think this compliments how she comes to desire improving because of her blossoming connection with Reina which ultimately leads to her understanding Reina more. Leading to that synergy. Sound Euphonium is so good.
