Mental Health in STEM

Sincere condolences to the friends and families of STEM leaders we lost. I will not link to their stories out of respect. I hope this video serves to inspire and support STEM researchers, especially the most marginalized. I don't intend to offend or upset anyone by the content of this video. I am not a mental health professional. These are lessons I've learned along my own journey. If you need ...

Thank you so much for this, exactly what I needed before going in
You're so welcome, good luck!
This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you!! 💖
Thank you for the video. Very helpful. But why did you not talk about mock lecture 😢
Mock lectures are usually part of on-site visits. See parts 4 and 5.
@@drsunshine_uth I see, thank you very much 🙂

I understand. Thank you for commenting.
Sunshine. Good night 😴
Thank you for watching 🙏🏾
I don't agree with you because it didn't happen to you therefore until it happen to you Don't say you wouldn't react this way or that way. Please be realistic.
Thanks for your comment and perspective
At 4:49, almost asleep.
I recommend playing the videos while asleep to promote subconscious learning 👍🏽
I'm not sure what this was intended to convey other than ugliness. I appreciate the work @drsunshine_uth put into this presentation.
Will it attract job interviews
Likely, if combined with exceptional qualifications.
@@drsunshine_uth I am already qualified for the position i apply for. i have 15 years experience in tech field. but interviews dont come due to slump🙂 . 🙂

Microaggression is something in your head you use to justify your victimhood status
Thanks for your feedback. The very existence of this channel signifies that I'm not a victim, but indeed I'm very successful. I still urge people with marginalized identities to ignore comments from people with inadequate credentials. Have a great day 👍🏽
For those who haven't sharpened your radar yet, the commenter is attempting to do something known as "gaslighting", or seeking to convince someone that their perception/reality isn't valid. Stay vigilant folks.
This is all great information, thank you for this! I do have a question concerning the research statement, though. Every job that I have seen advertised over the past few years in STEM has required a two-page maximum for research (and usually, teaching) statements. What would your advice be for prioritizing information to put on such a truncated statement?
Thank you for your positive feedback! Regarding a 2 page maximum, I'd organize the document in roughly 5-6 paragraphs: 1) introductory statement of interest, importance, and thematic fit of your research area; 2-4) abstract-like summaries of 3 future research projects you'd launch upon starting the position; 5-6) Description of external funding opportunities and potential collaborations with existing faculty. There should be room for 1-2 summary figures or tables that complement your research plan. With such a short statement, the committee is likely looking for cutting edge-ideas, feasible projects, and most importantly, alignment with the search area.
You’re beautiful! Stay strong and positive!
Thank you so much BG!! Always a loyal supporter!
These are wonderful powerful affirmations! Thank you Dr. Sunshine ❤
Thank you so much for affirming the video!
Yay!! New episode of under the hood!!!
It's really nice seeing your department supporting and rewarding focused engagement research to actually solve these problems on the ground
The support is at the campus level as well, and policies cover all academic personnel at my University.
Thank you for responding!!!!!!! :)
Dr. Ivey - do you requests for office hour topics to discuss?
Please make requests in the Google form linked in the description box.
I also create readme text docs too, to help me remember codes and locations etc!
Yes! The README files are crucial for keeping track of what is stored where 😊
This is a good topic too!!!
Looking beautiful Dr. Sunshine!!!!
Humble thanks!! 🙏🏾

A suggestion on file management that was suggested to me recently: make a separate "data" file for each project. Then set up cloud backup with Google drive for every other folder in the project directory. Backs up everything except massive data sets
Thanks for this comment. I also forgot to mention redundancy. Have 2-3 copies of everything on different clouds/drives/computers.
The point about gaining transferable skills from undergrad research is an important note that seems true at any level of experience. You may not enjoy what you're doing but you can get skills - i really like this type of advice for all levels of researcher. There's always the opportunity to grow and learn and you can take those skills with you when you're doing something that may be of more personal interest #CF
Very true!
(srs) This is my favorite upload, yet. I could've listened to this discussion for hours on end
Thank you, Sunni!! Appreciate you posting the recordings online as well. Great responses to the questions #CF
All live streams will be available for playback. Thanks for listening!
This was all incredibly valuable insight again, Sunni. Thanks for posting all of these videos. Especially the notes on group management and keeping everything in a shared directory. Also the advice about the first year / wrapping up lingering work - very helpful tips. Cheers!

Keep up the great work, Dr. Ivey! I really like how the lab space turned out - it will foster a collaborative, welcoming environment. DEIB- the B is very valuable. #ACM
