#AfricanLiterature #BookReviews Reading this book, I wondered what, if anything, had changed from the time of the first publication, in 1996, to now, 25 years later. Wahome Mutahi will remain in Kenya's literature history, and his books should also be on your shelf. I hope to make more videos about our literature and politics. I hope they will add some value to you and inspire you to delve deep...

#BookReview #AfricanLiterature This one was an interesting one. I first heard of Facing Mount Kenya on a recommended list in a class. I really only read it because I felt it could help me to learn more about my culture. In the video I talk about why I thought the introduction by Malinowski (big anthropology guy) was also a message in its own right (the assumed superiority of white/western schol...

Hello there! It's Ruguru here. This is the first video of what I hope will be a great and mutually enlightening journey looking and delving deep into our literature. Literature and books have played a key role in assisting me on my own journey of finding out more about myself, my history and my culture. And I wanted to share that with you. Though I believe in reading widely, I confess I have a ...
Where can I get a copy.did it in literature in O'level 1986.
Great video. Thank you.
I was reading Mia Couto from Mozambique and wanted to know more about African authors. Congratulatiins for your vlog!
Hi Ruguru. Thank you so much for the review. We have thousands of Gikuyu born in the Diaspora who would love to know more about our great nation. I was at pains training to explain to my son who is born and raised in America what is "Ira" magical white substance found on the summit of Mount Kenya, which is not snow. I also wanted to explain to him what a " Ndemathi" is. This is a large mystical creature that was half fish, half dragon and highly intelligent that was summoned out of the water during an "Itwaka". Most of this would appear to be "Mumbo Jumbo" or " Hocus Pocus", however, this is indeed an integral part of Agikuyu culture and history. I strongly believe that you are fulfilling the prophecy of "Chege Wa Kabiru" who said in the 17th or 18th century that a time will come when a young generation will revive a culture and heritage lost in time, and bring back the Gikuyu Nation to its glory and unity with our creator. Thaayo Thaayo.

Hi. I havenΒ΄t yet watched this but I WILL. I listened to one of yours that you did a while back and I am trying to build my african writers awareness. I enjoy the way you present and review. So I am also learning from you. Keep it up.π€π½
Hi. I just discovered your channel as I am starting out with a book channel. As I have decided to read more books by african authors, I googled who was on already there on youtube and yours came up. I am now reading Forty eight guns for the General by Eddie Iroh which is fictional novel but it gets you thinking about some of the things you talk about( though only a small part). I am going to read this book. Thanks for this . I will watch your more recent videos. Good points.
Been looking for these type of books for my online book club!

It's good to have both sides of the opinion but for objectivity how did kikuyus find themselves in Lamu,Nakuru,Kitale,Laikipia,Samburu and Narok? Why did a crowd of darkness engulf Kenya upon Kenyatta's death?

πͺπΏ The question of expressing oneself in English is just a deflection from the conversation and caucasians are very good at that, gas lighting. Sneaky.
Can you please share on the symbolism that have been used In the book
This book changed my life and made me conscious at 17 years old. I'm 53 now and still have it and love it.
Hi Ruguru, please check out the book, "Paekche's Principle:The Great Secret of Asia", perhaps another tool to help decolonise the mind.

An excellent collection of essays. A very short but informative read. Very well written
Culture bomb = (colonial) school nowadays The goal of (colonial) school for 130 years is to reinforce and maintain imperialism and western dominance (politic , economic , cultural domination) by oppressing , devaluating african peoples and their languages and cultures and by raising European languages and cultures. It trains students to hate their people , their culture and language and to unquestionably , unconditionally love and raise colonial language and culture. This make that peoples who finished (?or go to school are trained to fight against their peoples (and their language) and fight for colonialism , imperialism , for western governments (and industries)enrichment and power.
Hi sweetheart, sorry to say but you are reading a book written by a traitor. You are better off reading wikipedia or listening to an old mad woman talk about the nation
Thanks for this review! βπΏ
Thank you so much for watching! Appreciate it!
wow great reveiw ....hope you found the meaning of your name
It means West or Western. Like as the name Waruguru means One from the West. Which would have meant Westside of Mt. Kenya or just west, relative to the speaker.
Hehe interesting question! I thought it meant North but have different people also saying it's west so I am still figuring it out ππ

I'm really enjoying my time on your channel
I got a copy of this book already, i can't wait to dive in. i'll be back to fully watch your video when i'll be done with the reading of it. Thank you for sharing.
Hey, hope you got round to reading it! Thank you for watching. Hopefully we can have more discussions in the future!
Enjoyed the video. I've read Wizard of the Crow but not this one. It sounds very interesting.
Thanks for the review. The topic of languages is one that will always be relevant. In SA we have 11 official languages and sometimes I feel bad for not knowing all the languages. I feel bad for being fluent in English. The only thing that comforts me is the fact that I took my home language as a subject in school; so I can confidently say I can speak my language and read and write in it. But I don't really think it's bad that we have the language of English because if we didn't, then you and I would not be able to watch each other's videos since I think you don't know my home language Setswana and I also don't know yours. Writing books in English allows us to tell our own stories to the world and those that were ignorant can become informed about our stories. All we need to do is support our authors so that their books become national bestsellers. Then promote them so that there can be hype around them forcing the people of the West to want to read the books. I think in those way we will also create an opportunity for them to be international bestsellers and also have their books translated into other languages and being adapted into a movie. For example how many authors from America and Europe do you know of, but have never read their books? You know them because someone kept talking about them and made their stories relevant. Lastly I just want to say - I fully agree that we should be proud of our languages. I love Setswana. I think I get excited when I hear someone speaking the language fluently and also using proverbs and idioms. Thank you for such an in depth discussion. I loved it π
I agree with what your lecturer said when he said read the stories of your people. Decolonising the mind has been on my TBR for a while.
I'm putting this book on my TBR. I'm so happy to have found your channel. Looking forward to reading more books by Kenyan authors.
Thank you for watching! I am inconsistent here but will do better to give more. I know it matters when there is content from our community so want to contribute! ππΏππΏ
