Stroboscopes & Smokemachines
Netherlands
Приєднався 6 лют 2019
Do anything you wanna do and do it yourself. Do it quick, cheap and do it for the love and not prestige. Stroboscopes & Smokemachines is a documentary mapping electronic music culture in The Hague and Rotterdam and its particular scene ironically called the West Coast Sound of Holland.
The ’90s underground was an era of self-governed dance music settlements with a lot of uncharted territory and air of invention; it was the right time and right place for raw, uncompromising and deeply experimental music. But make no mistake to dismiss it as ‘old glory’ - new talents and labels are channeling the stripped-down gritty electronica and DIY attitudes while the pioneers of the scene retain devoted following.
Dutch filmmakers Anna Bogomolova and Dammes Kieft portray artists from the Dutch West Coast, whose music and beliefs hold key ingredients of freedom and oblivion.
The documentary is in post-production and will premiere at selected film and music festivals late 2019. The initiative

Making a cassette EP with Legowelt and Animistic Beliefs
This short film captures two days of collaboration between Animistic Beliefs and Legowelt. The first day spent creating six improvised tracks and the second working on the project name and cassette artwork. We witness inspiration arrive, not as a supercharged montage of eureka moments, but instead a gradual process of exploration and trial and error. The moments in between; sharing cookies and prospecting for a sandwich hold just as much relevance as any frenzied productivity.
Whilst the Animistic Beliefs duo and Legowelt are in many ways very different artists, one very new, the other with over 25 years of musical history, both seemed to be ready to let the moment take hold without forcing the process.
Created by Anna Bogomolova & Dammes Kieft (Blitzkickers). Originally intended to be a short scene in the full length documentary Stroboscopes & Smokemachines, which is currently in production and expected to premiere at selected film and music festivals late 2019.
Legowelt and Animistic Beliefs cassette EP Audiosport 8 - De Diepe Wereld is available at clone.nl/item53466.html and digitally at legowelt.bandcamp.com/album/de-diepe-wereld

Legowelt & Animistic Beliefs Trailer
Переглядів 6895 років тому
When inspiration strikes, it rarely does so in the way that most behind-the-scenes documentaries would have you believe. Back in June of last year, in what was intended to be a short scene in the full length documentary Stroboscopes & Smokemachines, Rotterdam electronic duo Animistic Beliefs were invited to Legowelt’s Scheveningen home to take part in a studio session. The latest torchbearers o...

This is a really nice documentation of artists playing around, relaxing and enjoying themselves. So important to make stuff for the fun of it.
Sick ass back yard
to see this process is very inspiring.
Audio transfer from computer to cassette? That's not proper way... When I buy music on analog media I want to be sure that the entire track was analog.
It is pretty rare to find 100% analog recordings made nowadays, and what is the real gain from it? The experience of the format is more the point than total analog purity
@@axumisiarecords143 Transferring the digital signal to cassette for the sake of principle makes no sense. Instead of a laptop, it was enough to use any analog audio recorder - for example, a Tascam Portastudio and make copies from it. If someone does not care about purism, then choose streaming or CD-audio. Then it is ok.
@@Shape84 I don't see what the big deal is, sound can be converted from analog to digital and back again. There's no special magic lost in that as long as you master according to your format.
@@Shape84 people like cassettes because they sound bad in a good way, they aren't ultra high fidelity audiophile grade, they're portable little ways to listen to music and people like the hiss. This kind of audio purism isn't realistic, nobody is operating 100% analog studios now and shipping master reels direct to the pressing plants unless they have piles of money to burn on ancient equipment.
@@axumisiarecords143 Reasoning in this way, it is quite possible to conclude that instruments such as the piano can be safely replaced by a computer program. One can, but in the case of more ambitious art forms this should not be done. I regard Legowelt's music as just such a high art form, which is inevitably linked to ancient technology. I know that some people tend to go into exaggeration. I try to keep my sanity. It would be an exaggeration, for example, to buy a reference Studer A80 to record a few cassette tapes later. Maintaining a 100% analog signal path from the studio to the pressing plant is indeed costly, but not out of the question. In this case, an analog track could have been successfully used without a great deal of money. Of course, this is just my opinion and I respect Legowelt for his music.
great video, stumbled upon it just now :)
❤
Very likeable fellow! Love his gentle wackiness, it's totally authentic, no posturing, true genuinely talented artist.
is there going to be some kind of a whole thing or that is all? the quality is awesome
Legowelt gives you that feeling you can accomplish your music dreams without looking for "outsiders" opinions
Yeah, he's got the art of "not giving a fuck" down to perfection. He has an intriguing workflow.
This is Techno Music.
LEGOWELT IS THE GOAT OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC
Lovely video 👌
Thanks for this! Are there only these 2 parts, or can I watch the whole thing somewhere?
what about the mastering process if there is any?
Just K7 is the master. ;)
MORE!
one off the best dokumetation from Den Hague! More!
two of my favorites collab. how am I just now seeing this?
Damn, I want to do this shit too. :(
do it
“Just do It!” 😁
I really like the way you guys film! keep it up!
Shawn Thanks! We are in the final stretch filming scenes and interviews for the full length feature - hope you’ll enjoy the result as much as this short!
I wish there would be more about making the music. All the six tracks were made in one day? I can barely make a good loop in one day.
Call it synthesizer

Thank you so much for your work! Never forget never regret
How awesome is it that Legowelt has such a beautiful house from making the music he loves without compromise ....
plus he looks such a cool and laidback talented dude !
The dutch government gave him that house because he is a national treasure
@@bassbird is that true?
Holland government also did an experimental cloning so there are at least 61 Dannys. That important treasure.
The compromise is recording tapes from the laptop.
cool.
Hipsters
zo awkward lol
I'm really enjoying this video
Super gaaf!!!
Nitbit intermezzo is my favorite track so far. Love the tempo of the track. A slow 808 pattern is a thing of beauty ❤️ Thank you so much for posting this documentary. Awesome!
Legowelt seems very open to sharing and a very nice guy By the way people w/ neumann k120 & soundcraft ARE nice heyheyhey
Cool
1:20 - smash or pass? :D :D
jezus doe even normaal man
I Have that exact same Bruce Lee banner in the beginning LOL :D
die "randomness" vind ik leuk want elke keer dat ik dat cassettebandje in de kast zou tegenkomen zou ik denken "wat de fak staat hier ook alweer op". i.t.t. totaal gelikte concept producten.
Reminds me of when I used to hand-make cassette booklets as a kid. I miss those days. Will get back into it now. Inspired by how relaxed this whole process was for Legowelt and his collaborators.
What a beautiful home he has.
untuck your fuckin shirt
Nostalgia based trends ! nice ... yet, we know it's just yet another fad!
