It's very close to one of the best touring bike's IV owned over the last 60 odd years i bought mine new back in 06 and it's never let me down after nearly 20 years and 165000 odd KMs she will probably outlive me iv seen the FJR Yamaha with some doing well over 3 and 4 hundred thousand kilometres it is a bit top heavy but when you're out riding this bike you really don't notice its weight to much id highly recommend the FJR 1300 for it's reliability smoothness and it's pretty easy to loose your licence

Yamaha definitely hit a home run with this entire engine and frame combination. They worked on the earlier versions, to make this one, and it's sister bikes, run so good and handle so good, riders really love them. Definitely one of the top bikes on my buy list.

A seat height of 27 inches is best for the weight, and near perfect for those who are not long in the legs. The bike is an interstate cruiser. Yes you can run it as a daily. Should make a nice cannonball runner. As for the price tag, well, nothing is cheap.

Yamaha makes the most exciting engines but cosmetically they often look cheap. Honda on the other hand have the nicest fit and finish of all the Japanese bikes. But often are conservative with engines giving them less character

On;y difference i see are the suspension components, keyless ignition (which I don't lilke anyway) and brembo calipers. You are wrong on the seat buddy, the std MT09 has a 2-part seat as well. My money is on the std model now. If the SP say, had a bump in displacement and/or power of 10 + hp (and weight was kept to the 425 lbs), I'd be all in.
