If I'm not mistaken....Miles spoke very highly of this Sextet, He was able to put together, in His autobiography. It sounds like a child of the first collaboration He had with Gil Evans in 1948. He said something about a slight connection to the Group with Cannonball and Coltrane.

Wenn Bach auf diesen fantastischen Musiker gehört hätte, hätte er spontan zur Feder gegriffen und 6 Sonaten für Klarinette geschrieben. Warum 6? Nun, er schrieb 6 Cellosonaten, 6 Brandenburgische Konzerte, 6 Violinsonaten, 6 Triosonaten für Orgel. Sechs Tage sollst du arbeiten, und am siebten Tag sollst du ruhen. Dies mag Bach veranlasst haben, sechs Musikstücke zu schreiben 🙂

I cannot for the life of me understand why this composer orchestrates so heavily in his concertos. He does exactly the same thing in the Guitar Concerto. It must be a nightmare for the soloists, battling against huge brass sections and heavy handed percussion writing. However, having said that, both are entertaining pieces showcasing the instruments in the modern idiom very well indeed.
