Is Abruzzo Italy's best kept secret?
I'm always searching for a new and exciting location in Italy, one that offers the "Sojourn Trifecta" - spectacular natural wonders, a rich, intriguing history and amazing local culinary specialties.
I found all of this in the region of Abruzzo and because this incredible region is only 2 hours outside of Rome, a visit can be an amazing add-on trip!
On this day of exploration, I covered lots of ground and traveled many, many miles. I started in Navelli at B&B Abruzzo Segreto and continued to Ofena where I enjoyed a delicious lunch at Agristurismo Sapore De Campagna.
Afterwords, I traveled north to one of Italy's most stunning national parks; Gran Sasso national park and hiked to the top of a mountain with an unforgettable view of the mighty Gran Sasso - the tallest peak in the Italian Apennine mountain chain.

Have you seen this side of the Amalfi Coast?

The lore of southern Italy has continued for centuries. There's a feeling here that escapes words but seems to influence the many towns, villages and of course the people. We eat with locals, discovering their traditional cuisine and vivid wines - the fruits and vegetables sourced sometimes just outside of your r...
Why so many obelisks in Rome?

Hey friends! There's nothing like wandering Rome's ancient cobblestone streets. I shot this on a full day walk (I clocked 12 miles!). When I'm in Rome, which is often because I usually arrive in Rome's FCO airport, I always stop by the Pantheon. The history and magnificence of this building is mind blowing. Pirate Remains on the Amalfi Coast?

While traveling by foot, from Salerno to Positano on Italy's mythical Amalfi coast, I learned in a more intimate way, the history of the Sarecen pirates from northern Africa including their long storied history of attacking the small towns and viallages of this particular region. Like so many piazzas in Italy, there is a water fountain. The fountains typically carry fresh water from local, natural sources. This fountain, in San Antonio's Piazza carries water from the Italian Alps (Dolomites) and is a great place to fill your bottle before getting back on the hiking / walking path. It was never a secret, it's the fact that the vast majority of tourists want to hit the big 4: Rome, Florence, Verona and Venice. Other than that, most don't even know that Italy is much bigger. Just like the vast majority believe that pasta and pizza are the only dishes to eat in Italy
