Wizard Workshops
New Zealand
Приєднався 22 лют 2012
Based in Dreamspace gallery, Gisborne, New Zealand aka 'Middle Earth' ever since the Lord of the Rings movies were set here, Wizard Workshops is a new school and 'folk factory' of arts and crafts, philosophy and 'alt enterprise', dedicated to the Art and crafts Renaissance, and more widely to the 'True West' - our Civilization at its best, i.e. a 'Minas Tirith' of liberty, justice, truth, and dynamic evolution into the 'Possible Human' and preservation of a truly noble culture.
Peter Harris, founder of Dreamspace limited, original builder of Cafe Eutopia, wrote a (free) ebook 'How to be a Wizard', subtitled 'How Life is magical, and we are too'.
Wizard Workshops is taking that conviction in 3D to people coming to Dreamspace for the Workshops, and virtually worldwide thanks to UA-cam. Subscribe and enjoy!

"There is no spoon" - Here's proof!
Well, no less amazingly, WE CAN BEND SPOONS whether they're matrix or matter - if we can conceive of a bending, and believe it can be done, we can choose to move our muscles and BEND THAT SPOON! Or, as Jobs put it, Make a Dent in the Universe...

A new folly: AI-enabled fragmentation of beautiful wholes

A Reflection in the Magic Mind Lounge, mostly about the temptation to use AI to break up and repackage a creative property into smaller and smaller units for sale - at the expense of the complex beauty of the original unified whole. I use as an example my sprawling epic fantasy The Apples of Aeden ( www.applesofaeden.com Facebook applesofaeden ); also Wizard Workshops itself, a Ren...

Apologies for the late in the day voice and one-handed filming. If I'm spared I'll definitely make a snappier version, with camera person, and more linear! But upon review I found I did (surprisingly) cover the essentials, just with a little backtracking. AND I hope to get it all down in written and illustrated form step by step with tips and tricks, in a convenient How-to book and ebook on Ama...

Rapid prototyping as Christmas approaches with all the usual pressures! A heat wave has slowed everything down, and several other 'Niggle' jobs breathing down my neck, I channel the legendary stubbornness, lack of balance and monomania of the entrepreneur... This is the 'pushing through the dip' stage Seth Godin talks about in his book 'The Dip'. I faced the sweltering heat, tinnitus, and sleep...

Do you ever use an acrylic or latex based sealer?
Just found your channel…then your website, and also ordered your book. Great style! Thank you for sharing your wonderful tips!
thats so smart! 😊
Thanks... There's a smart feeling when you find a solution that's easy for you... A perfect fit, tailor made so to speak:)
Incredible. It seems the preservation of technology like this is becoming increasingly important
If only to give humans options to go low-tech, for aesthetic satisfaction and possibly for surviving and rebuilding civilization if the house of cards of digital tech and global supply chains comes crashing down. It's 'antifragile' to have low tech knowledge!:) probably it should be low tech recorded in books too!
Love the guillotine shout. Rusty Cage gave it a fair go and seemed to do a good job of it!
Thanks, can you elucidate? Rusty can? I'll have to google that.
I meant rusty CAGE sorry! pre Christmas brain!
Pretty fascinating, thanks!!!
Yes, the whole collection of trades in the old book industry was highly developed and yet still hand tool based.
Why is it a book "plough" and not a book "plane" though?
Good point! I love the name and didnt question it. There will be a reason though! Ill look into it, since you asked...
So, i think the answer is found in the old joinery world, where there was a plough plane, which cut a groove in the timber by means of a protruding blade like a farming plough. The book plough also has a protruding blade, so even though its action is planing, its appearance is plough-like.
@nerdforge
Nerdforge is a dramatic legend... I shared the lord of the rings binding conversion episode with my little grandsons, who were impressed.
Awesome, i might build one in my shop for shits and giggles
Nice... I was dreaming of designs in my sleep last night... Something satisfying about a simple diy solution that is 1/10X in cost...
This is so incredibly beautiful. I love the insight you have given on your life and how your art is a reflection of not only your life, but a collection of concepts and religious metaphors.
Thank you! Art is about sacred meaning, which is, we find, very beautiful.
To keep creating is all I can do. Even when the body wants to challenge me, I push through and find the beautiful thing inside that wants to be on the outside. Keep creating, never too old for art!
And my main epiphany: clear the mind of anxious clutter, and that beautiful potential in you will emerge!
That's the spirit, never give up on the joy of creation!
The books look really nice and your overview of the construction process is fascinating. Your "Wizard's Bookbinding Manual" is a great idea that I'm sure will be of interest to hobbyers as a reference, especially if it contains technical details of materials, times etc. I'd love to see mini videos (get a phone holder!) of individual steps such as the embossing and cover sealing and they'd surely attract potential customers for your manual. Inspiring video, thanks for posting. 🪄
Thanks for the feedback - good suggestions! Yes and if steps filmed separately with tripod i could join them in an editor (another learning curve but needed!)
Wonderful. Thank you for sharing this idea.
Glad it's useful, there's so much potential out there!
Amén
Glad you concur... Any part in particular?
What was the question again :)
Im not sure... I question a lot of questions in a day, a week, a year!
I heard someone recently use the phrase 'mystical realism' for what you are describing. Are we not mystics who know the all-present presence of God?
Yes, i guess what im calling magical theism is at least mystical realism, in that we believe in the reality of much, most, or all of that which we contemplate in mystical states; also metaphysical realism in that we believe in the reality of the metaphysical realm, the realm of Plato's Ideas/forms. That realm I see as comprehensible by the rational level of our minds, but experienceable (?) by our mystical being in a supra-rational (but not anti-rational) mode. Plotinus in one flight of eloquent and difficult Greek somewhere in the Ennead (probably in many parts, actually - i just remember that one passage in a history of philosophy paper I did) describes a sort of virtuous-rational ramping up of a seeker's being to the very limits of his rational mind, and then going beyond it in a mystical experience. Wittgenstein too, in the metaphor of 'kicking away the ladder' (of symbolic, verbal thinking) once we're 'up in the heavenlies' (my words not his)...
Is the lithium coat really necessary? What exactly does it provide?
Not strictly necessary but we thought for a public sculpture if it hardens the surface against possible graffiti cleanings etc its wirth it. However there's a drawback in that it tends to dull the pigments in the plaster... Some chemical reaction with the iron oxides...i guess substituting lithium oxide which is probably less colourful...
@@wizardofeutopiathank you! Do you apply it after the cement has cured all the way after 28 days or before it's fully cured. Since it "hardens" the surface coat, is there a risk that it could cause delamination from the scratch coat or cause cracking by making the surface cure at a different rate? Can you still add paint/tint over a lithium coat? Thank you for all of your help! New to this and trying to take all precautions necessary.
busy, very good cool things
Yes its good to follow your bliss! Measured pace is good too - I tend to race! Probably because I don't have the ruthlessness to say No to a lot of niggly jobs... And then I can get a bit scared to go back to my big bliss jobs - even though i love it when I'm doing them... Im going to write next to my long to DO list for this new week a to-DON'T list!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Stopmotion...hm thanks. Son robert used to do stop motion with pebble figures...
oooo that looks so cool!
Yes .. I wish i could paint like that!:)
Cutoff wheels are extremely dangerous. Someone at the company I work for lost their life recently using one. Diamond cutting blades are an alternative.
Sorry to hear that! I'll look up dangers of cutoff wheels. Of course all power tools can be dangerous... I guess metal diamond wont ever break up...but they arent as thin for quick cuts, and steel can/does blunten them... diamond is carbon and has a strange attraction to steel...
the leaf looks so cool! and the tree mold is so pretty! ❤
Thank you! 😊 The leaf could be a real autumn leaf but with raised writing on it.. a 'Passportal' Leaf in my fantasy story Apples of Aeden... The Tree of Life is so universal, usually that mould is for plaster casts, but its a whole new feel using flax paper pulp... The holy grail would be a carved book cover mould. .. Watch this space!
Rainbow book is a cool idea would like to know more about it. One handed demoulding!
Glad you like the rainbow notebook! It's surprising what a lift it is giving me using it ... There's a long history behind it, going back to my philosophy days. Process theory, lots of diagramming, a thesis titled Process and Inquiry, recently a canvas walking labyrinth I'm calling the Lifetree labyrinth..and a clock, the phasetimer, for timing creative meetings - 'Tge living logic that makes meetings magical'. I started a blog about it www.4phase.org. If you want one of the first little batch either in pocket A6 size as in the video or the srA5 size, DM me or email me wizardofeutopia@gmail.com. Depending where you are i can send you a trial one before Christmas... I really must write an up-to-date sheet for using the 4phase method!
Kia ora brother, great vids! Keep it up 🤙
Thanks! Will do! Exciting to explore more...
awwwww your dog is so cute! 🥰
Yeah she goes everywhere, understands sign language too!
Brilliant! Instant follow! Thank you sir!
Really nice things! It does look more artful.
Thanks for that ..it helps to put it all out and see what we've got and what not ..and get feedback.
Im wishing u the BEST luck in achieving ur goal! ❤😊
Thanks .. and we aim to replace luck with knowledge... The more I learn, the luckier I get...
Omg I love it ❤
@@senseuall it IS exciting to find a positively foolproof way to avoid a 'sticky' problem! And save so much money you can try new applications and... Bigger! I plan to do a mould of the 8 ft wooden statue ive been carving for years then cast it in pigmented cement plaster so i can put her in people's gardens .... I will film that process too - will need a good Mother Mould to support the silicone mould and keep its shape...
Pirsig's story absolutely sent me down that same path. I read it when I was 16, I had asked my teacher and he said it was his favorite book. He brought his copy in from home and lent it to me; told me to keep it when I finished it about a month later. It's wild that it's partially based off of his real life story. Lila, the sequel, was good as well. Less to chew through... Or maybe I had just gotten better after all the initial chatauqua's.
Oh nice! So in what ways did it change your life? For me it was the realization that my business didnt have to be a 'factory' - it was more a workshop, Caring about Quality, and that made all the difference! Turned our lives around for the better AND the business..we even paid back my father in law!:) An economic miracle... I was even able to go study philosophy and my two staff worked to make the oval photo frames we specialized in , unsupervised...while i wholesaled them in the city and they even earned bonuses...
Esher Im sure is delighted to be equaled if not outdone by a fellow sorcerer of creativity.Thankyou🤙
Oh yes Escher the mind contortionist!:) i wrote an essay in philosophy way back in Auckland university 'Presupposition and the Quest for Objectivity' and on the cover I had Escher's self portrait holding a mirror globe:)

Thanks! We can all find a little wizardry IF we look in the right way... Musing, relaxing, trusting there will be a way. The infinite 'Continuum of Possibility' (Charles Sander Peirce).
you healthy old fart god bless you.

Brilliant! Thank you very much for the upload. Niagara falls Canada checking in.
Glad you enjoyed it...feels good to contribute a little to the huge knowledge pool here on UA-cam.
Damn good video
Wow really? Thanks! It's one handed again...
I would be uncomfortable saying that word 😂
Oh THAT word! It just came to mind... Call me old fashioned:)
I'm not sure why someone would ever need to glue paper on edge, but I could see using your method for gluing very thin wood strips together. Q: were the joined edges straight cut or serrated before gluing?
Thanks..yes its odd how a seemingly not very useful breakthrough can have other unanticipated applications... With veneer id use exterior pva, stronger... And to answer your question yes i plan to edge roughen the sheets (in a pile) using a perfectly level plate glass strip with coarse emery paper glued to it. Important to keep the paper dead straight. It may not be strictly necessary to roughen but i always do it when binding my books.
💕i love you old guy😊😊 💕
I wish you filmed on camera. I can’t see what you are doing.
Sorry! I need a camera person or always use a tripod.
@ I can understand that! You have a really unique channel and all is so new to me so I would really like to learn :)
is that just acrylic gold paint?
Yep:) safe and cheapish and easy.
What is the size of the rebar I would like to roll 1/2 hot rolled round around a barrel 22.5” od
Ah,, quite a tight circle! I'd say may be too hard to roll such a curve this way- I'd go the other way, screw the barrel to a plywood or similar sheet, fasten the sheet to a bench or pin to the ground, then clamp the end of tge rebar to the lip of the barrel or alternatively poke into a hole in the barrel, tgen walk the rebar around the barrel...then as in my 'How to bend rebar into rings, fast' video, cut through the resulting coil of rebar with an angle grinder with cutoff wheel ..
Thank you sir
