Neil Z Cox Woodcarving
Canada
Приєднався 11 січ 2021
Woodcarving as well as sculpture in bronze, stone, and clay are my primary exploits. My work is mostly representational and I especially like creating human figures. Storytelling and creating characters engages me the most. I do some 3D computer modelling as well. Whenever I can capture an emotion that strikes a chord for someone I feel my efforts are worthwhile. I live in Toronto with my wife and children.

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Neil, your incredibly talented Sir, Thank you for the wonderful video.
Good stuff!
Great tutorial! Btw that’s not a Brueghel painting, it’s Arcimboldo.
Yes I've been meaning to correct that. I've also been meaning to add more tutorials. I appreciate everyone's patience.
Very good
This is great, thanks
I'm very interested in wood sculpture and curious about the model of your Stihl chainsaw.
Stihl makes a line of battery powered saws. The batteries are expensive but the saw is quiet and can be used inside a shop. The bar and chain are specially designed for carving. The model I have is an older msa160 but they make newer more powerful models. Be sure to operate the saw safely.
I wish i could do that
Technique over mystique! Nice useful instruction.
So beautiful!
thank you Neil, very helpful insights
Your videos are extremely helpful. Thank you for taking the time to make them. Please make more. You are very easy to follow and a wealth of information.
Excellent work on your art and your teachings thanks!!!
Excellent! Thanks so very much!
Excellent, thank you!
Really great information, it's hard to find material to help the beginner get started so I really appreciate you making this.
Very helpful! Thank you

This is fantastic, thank you for the upload
I work for the railroad, and I’m a wood carver. I agree… never carve (or walk) on the tracks
Thank very Helpful!!!!
please upload more videos
You mention sometimes you model with the computer. what program do you use to do that?
I'm using Zbrush, but I also do some modelling with Blender and MakeHuman. The last two are open source and free.
human head profile of nose lips forhead going in circle around the human sized head could be woodturned, then noses cut out, or nose material removed till looks like nose , how many can be one , two ,tree, four. eigth sixteen even more.k
Very interesting. I'm sure it can be done.
@@neilzcoxwoodcarving probably has been done a few times but not findable on youtube , you can be first in the world
@@neilzcoxwoodcarving oh your a carver not a turner ...
Your videos are invaluable. It’s hard to find carving advice for faces on UA-cam. Please please make more. I’d love to see one focused on the mouth and eyes too. I also really appreciate your sense of humor. Good stuff.
You read my mind. I'm working on videos for the mouth and eyes. I appreciate everyone's patience.
Super helpful. I’m trying to get faces down and always ruin the proportions. This was great. Thank you!
Yes, you are very welcome.
Great video thank you. Just found your stuff
Hope it helps
Thanks this video was very helpful to me!
I'm glad it was helpful. There are so many great video tutorials out there on all kinds of topics.
Отличный урок, 👍👋 благодарю
You are very welcome
Plz tell me wood name... 🙏🙏🙏
In North America we call it Basswood. In Europe it is called Linden. In England it is also called Limewood.
아까 기차올때 깜짝 놀랐습니다. ㅎㅎ 나무 조각 참 좋아해요. 예전에 대학시절 깍던 기억이 나서 좋았습니다. I was pleasantly surprised when the train came earlier. I really like wood carving. It reminded me of when I was in college, and it was good.
Yes, you do good work.
Brilliant thankyou sir this is amazing tutorial wood carving cheers to you sir.
Thank you. My apologies for taking so long to finish the series. I still have the mouth and eyes to cover.
Отличный урок, благодарю и ждём продолжения 👋
Yes, thenk you.
I have been woodcarving for twenty years and a Retired Surgeon. You have been the greatest inspiration My focus now is what wood to take away !!! Thank you so much.
Fantastic, glad to hear it.
You instantly got a subscriber.
hope you find it helpful.
These are amazing, thank you so much.
I'm glad you find it helpful. I'm sorry it's taking me so long to get the next ones done.
Thank you for your analyzing video ! I do reliefs carving for years ( floral, gunstocks etc) and only recently I started human face - I made one in cotton bark - friends like it - and .. I realized I have to learn again from scratch - eye - nose - ear .... your video definitely help and speed up my progress - thank you for that ! And from this moment I am yours subscriber !
I have one on eyes and the mouth that I'm working on and a few more after that. I'm slow. I appreciate your patience.
Please please PLEASE do more and more. Do you accept challenges? I want to see an expert like yourself create a face like this on 2" thick timber. I'm a wood carver myself, and I generally only have access to thinner timber, and I'm desperate to learn how to carve a face like on a coin yet there's next to no info out there :/
Yes I intend to do more. I'll try to cover relief carving, which is carving on thinner material, but one of the real masters of relief carving is Rick Harney. Be sure to check out images and videos of his work.
Magnifico gracias Mr..
Then with the eyes you have to apply a litlel trick..mmm
Yes, my apologies, I haven't finished the video on carving human eyes yet, but I will get to it.
Hello Sir, Could you please give me the details of the chainsaw you used in this video? You gave us very informative things through this, especially the explanation with 3D model. Did you make it in 3Dmax software or something else, will work with Android smartphones?
The saw is a battery powered Stihl chainsaw with a carving bar and chain. Please be very careful when using any chainsaw. The carving bar allows you to create more detail than a regular bar. The battery power is quieter and can be used indoors. I used makehuman software for the 3D model and then refined it with zbrush. After that I animated it with Blender. I work with a regular desktop pc and I'm not sure if this can be done with an Android smartphone. I hope this helps.
@@neilzcoxwoodcarving thank you sir. Your kind detailed reply. In future we expect more informative videos regarding wood carving and sculpture. Thanks once again. And best wishes.
Love the video! Subbed
Hi Neil Your still at it, wonderful!!! Its Paul Dawkins living in Cornwall Nova Scotia, building tiny houses and sculptures.
Paul, It's great to hear from you. Stay in touch.
Love this and I needed this tutorial. Great job!!! Please keep them coming.
Yes, I'm sorry I haven't added any recently but I intend to cover the mouth and eyes and more after that. I hope you find them helpful.
Hi, I'd like to ask you how you blocked the sculpture.
hello deli rio, Perhaps the blocking out is somewhat simplified in the video. For a carving like this I work directly in the wood. However I encourage people to use good research and from your research you could trace the outline of the face from the side and the front and cut down to those contours. If you make a clay model you can even make some rough measurements. None of this is easy in the beginning, but with practice things get better. I hope this helps
@@neilthecarver very thank you for the reply
Great.Thank you very much.
A very insightful way to look at and analyze the forms to carve....and I love the humor! :)
Thanks for the feedback.
Hey Neil, really enjoying these videos. Fantastic editing, I love the roller coaster!
thanks Theo. I have a bunch more coming.
Great job Neil! You are a natural!!!
